Le Gymnopédiste (Moving Classics)

Little Smiles was written to celebrate and raise awareness of Autism. Little Smiles is a local charity that supports children with special needs at St Martin’s Special School and Early Birds Nursery in Gibraltar, hence the double edged intention of the title i.e. the Charity and the 3 short (little) pieces. 
The 3 pieces are named after three favourite activities; 
1 Trampolining 
2 Snoezelen
3 The Climbing Frame
Musically, the pieces are written much in the tradition of Erik Satie. They are minimalist but also draw on aspects of serialism and music set theory to develop the intentionally reduced melodic material.

Audio, Finale file String Quartet version, is based on the story of “Della Quercia—Of the Oak” dating back to Feb. 7, 1783 but resonates today. On that dramatic night in February so many decades ago, an earthquake accompanied by disastrous floods and earth slides, sent the populace of Conflenti into the streets and drove them towards the sanctuary of their central Church. Every family was affected with the destruction of their properties. Only the Church and its solitary oak tree located near the front entrance of the church survived. After the miraculous survival of the Church and the oak tree, the faith and hopes of the townspeople were forever intertwined with the Oak and their church. Survivors of natural disasters from all corners of the globe look for similar signs of divine support.

“Tarantella” | “Dance of Death”


A slightly different form of the “Dance of Death” occurs in
the legend of the “Tarantella” — a dance which borrows its
name from the seaside town in which it originated -- Taranto, in
Apulia, Italy. The tarantula spider (also named after the town)
was found in the surrounding countryside, and popular legend had
it that its bite would cause a fatal disease unless the victim
performed a lively dance, which in itself caused “Tarantism” for
dancing mania.

“Tarantism” has now been repeatedly discredited, and the bite
of the spider is only mildly toxic, and certainly not fatal.
Most scholars agree that the disease, prevalent from the
15th to the 17th centuries, was probably due to
hysteria. The music for the “Tarantelle(a)” is a virtuosic
showpiece, usually marked 'Presto' or 'Vivace', normally in 6/8
with regular phrase structure.


Composers such as Chopin, Liszt, Weber, Thalberg and Balakirev 
have immortalized the dance as a kind of Mimed Courtship Dance, 
usually performed by one couple surrounded by a circle of others. 
Castanets and Tambourines are held by the Dancers, and sometimes 
onlookers sing, usually in 3/8 or 6/8, alternating between minor and Major modes, 
usually increasing in tempo.

References to a “Dancing Disease" much older than “Tarantism” comes from an intense love of life; an aspect of the Middle Ages where the dance degenerated until it became pathologic and finally gave rise to the phenomenon of the Dancing Sickness described as people being overcome by intense religious passion and dancing until distortion of their bodies occurred. St. Vitus and St. John were their Patron Saints. This phenomenon is first documented in 1027, and records of a “Dancing Mania” date to 1374.

The World Is Smashed | The World Is Shattered

Gomila’s String Quartet No1 was composed between 6th and 18th May 2020 during lockdown due to the COVID pandemic. It is written very much in the Classical style and consists of five movements: 
Allegro, Menuetto 1, Largo, Menuetto 2 and a final Allegro Vivace.
The Quartet is in C major with the 4th movement in the Dominant key.
The Allegro opens with a Tutti. The eight notes in the opening two bars of this movement form the basis for the whole composition e.g. the Largo uses these eight notes in retrograde to form its main theme. Other compositional devices are used to provide a fresh presentation of the opening motif.
