La rondine è un'opera lirica in tre atti di Giacomo Puccini, su libretto di Giuseppe Adami.
Originariamente concepita come operetta, in forza di un contratto con gli impresari del Carltheater di Vienna, Puccini, insoddisfatto dell'impianto drammatico conferito dai librettisti Heinz Reichert ed Alfred Willner, volle trasformare La rondine in un'opera vera e propria affidandosi al commediografo italiano Giuseppe Adami; la scarsa convinzione dell'autore nel buon esito dell'operazione, ed anche una certa stanchezza di ispirazione, compromisero in misura determinante la gestazione del lavoro, che si trascinò avanti attraverso continui ripensamenti fra il 1913 ed il 1915.
Sciolto il contratto con i commissionari viennesi a causa dello scoppio del primo conflitto mondiale, La rondine fu rappresentata al Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo il 27 marzo 1917 diretta da Gino Marinuzzi (1882-1945) con Gilda Dalla Rizza, Tito Schipa e Francesco Dominici. L'accoglienza risultò nel complesso festosa, ma va ricordato che si trattava di una piazza facile in quanto abbastanza periferica.
Tante melodie, pochi temi (tutti chiaramente privati d'uno sviluppo qualsiasi e utilizzati come reminiscenze), ben due arie e un duetto, tanto valzer. Su questa semplice ossatura si regge la Rondine, in una ricerca di trasparenza sorretta dal ricorso all'impalcatura tradizionale. Essa non è affatto una scorciatoia per riconquistare il favore di un pubblico nostalgico, ma ha una funzione drammatica precisa. È sul telaio dei primi due numeri chiusi affidati a Magda nel primo atto («Chi il bel sogno di Doretta», «Ore dolci e divine»), infatti, che s'intesse tutto l'arco drammatico del secondo e del terzo atto, in modo che tutto ciò a cui assisteremo avrà sempre la caratteristica del déjà vu, funzione di cui si farà carico la ripresa ciclica degli stessi episodi musicali. È modo sottile di fissare un concetto: sino alla fine, quando Magda sarà costretta a scegliere il proprio futuro, non si vive mai nel presente, ma nella nostalgia del passato, qualunque esso sia.
