PLASTIC FLOWERS

Every day when I drive home from work I see this little shrine with plastic flowers

A name is written on the cross but somehow I can never make it out

The radio's playing something I once loved but can't remember

It's raining and I'm back to wondering what life is all about



The books I read when I was young have faded into nothing more than shadows

The teachers I once idolized are merely ghostly whispers in my ear

The cars on either side of me paint the street with break lights

It's raining and I'm back to wondering why all of us are here

Pretty plastic flowers from family and friends

Will you bring me plastic flowers when my journey ends? 



An ambulance comes wailing by and everyone pulls over like they're s'pposed  to

I notice that this incident has stopped me just a stone's throw from the shrine

I still can't read the name but then I spot a weathered photograph

It's raining and this face looks just like mine

The real miracle would be to turn the wine back into water
Give us all a chance to re-appear
The party's been over for forever
So what are we still doing here

Ghosts on the dance-floor
Chairs upside down

If we move far enough up north I bet we could still buy a little house by the ocean
Maybe up past Port Alberni on the side of the island facing the open sea
Or how about Bella Coola?
That place always sounds so hauntingly beautiful to me
 
I’ll take any kind of work, any kind of pay as long as at the end of the day we’re together
Together strolling along a beach with no foot prints other than our own
And when the night comes encroaching
We’ll light our little fire in an ancient ring of stone

Sunday mornings we’ll celebrate our freedom bedroom windows open to the ocean breeze
I'll make you breakfast like breakfast they only make in make believe
And when the storm comes a raging
Our little house by the ocean will shelter and reprieve
