Having featured on the Riviera Disco compilation series it’s time that Donald Dust returns to Bordello. This time the Scottish artist is back with a five track EP in the form of Nausea. Bending ideas and styles, the Edinburgh producer serves up a sample strewn, italo-infected grenade. Clean chords and percussion are sullied by hoarse vocals as arpeggiators grind and growl. Drum patterns stagger and stumble in the bleary eyed house-streaked “Sick Your Own Mix” of the original. The listener is never sure where Mr Dust is going to take them with influences and surprises coming in equal measure. “Noise in the Stairwell” is an electro stalker, bolts juttering and jangling in this work of vocoder-scented giallo funk. The styles continue to be melted into new sound forms on the flip with two versions of Jupiter Jack. The “Groove Mix” takes the staccato stabs of new beat and supercharges them with punishing percussion and a good helping of dancefloor devilment. Leading us in to the wee hours of the after, the “Jupiter Mix” leans on the darker tones and rusted up rhythms for a final body jack before the realisation that work starts in eight hours.

Donald Dust - Noise In The Stairwell

Real Velour's debut EP on Blaq Numbers comes to us from an unknown source in the early eighties. Its playful melodies and disco drum machines could be from mainland Europe, it's strange synth textures could be Japanese whilst its sardonic vocals could be from a post-industrial town in Thatcher's Britain; we just don't know.

What we do know is that in spite of its retro sound pallete, each track sounds fresh on any 21st century dancefloor. There is something indefinably new about these tracks; similar perhaps to the indefinable "Britishness" of 10cc in spite of their American accents and West Coast influences or the way Billy Childish somehow managed to make rock n roll sound alive again without changing it in any observable way.

Simply put: these are yesterday's sounds, tomorrow.

And who better to hold Real Velour's hand as he tries to navigate this strange retro-future than his two favourite sexy disco daddies, Donald Dust and Panthera Krause? Donald Dust's remagining of the title track on Spaceship In Tokyo puts us in New York territory, rendering it less angular, less Teutonic. There are shades of LCD Soundsystem, the Peech Boys and other artists from the Mutant Disco/No Wave scene whilst Panthera Krause's wild reinterpretation of the single, People Make Me Wanna Scream, is a fruity cocktail of freaky contradictions. Metallic and industrial rhythms blend perfectly with haunting synth pop textures. Panthera Krause finds the ghost in the machine and makes it dance!

The whole EP throbs with uninhibited glee. There is no coyness to be found here toward those genres that sometimes find themselves locked outside the fortress of "serious" dance music. While some techno bros gingerly dabble with Italo, Hi-NRG or J-Pop textures in some restrained, tasteful way as if to say "I like it... but I'm straight!", Real Velour jumps in with both feet.

This music is elegant without being aloof, playful without being ephemeral and it never abandons its primary objective - to make you dance!

Next up is a wicked all vinyl mix from two Edinburgh based DJ's - Donald Dust and The Nightlark. Two stalwarts of the Northern scene who have helped pushed forward leftfield electronic music in the Scottish capital and beyond.

This mix demonstrated an enormous depth of understanding as the pair weave between an eclectic assortment of House, EBM, Italo and beyond to craft a hypnotic tape which will sound as wild in the headphones as it would in the basement of a Scottish dive bar on a Friday night. We're thinking dimly lit, red lights, a lot of smoke.

The pair are fierce record collectors and the process behind delivering this mix was long and complicated. The result was worth the wait as it demonstrates a masterclass in genre fluidity and dancefloor prowess.

As 2024 wraps up, we take a moment to reflect on the incredible year we've had at SOULMEEX. We couldn’t let it pass without celebrating in style!

Of course, with Tom Banks, better known as Donald Dust, who emerged on the electronic music scene in 2017 with his debut EP, Dazzle Ship, released on No Bad Days. His music draws from a vibrant mix of golden-era italo synths, WBMX radio mixes, Ron Hardy-style drum tracks, and the early sounds of eurodisco-influenced house. This distinct mix of retro and modern elements quickly earned him recognition, with subsequent releases on Bordello A Parigi and the Edinburgh-based label Paradise Palms further showcasing his evolving style.
 
In 2018, Donald Dust launched his own label, Enter Planet Dust, debuting with the Mars R-Trax 7". The release, inspired by modular synth experiments, vintage sound effects, and disco drum grooves, highlighted his knack for crafting genre-bending DJ tools. That same year, he began a residency at Edinburgh’s Paradise Palms, hosted the Other Thumpers radio show on EH-FM, and performed across the UK, Europe, and the U.S. His 2019 EP, Fluorescent Music solidified his reputation, combining italo-tinged burners, sci-fi-inspired soundscapes, and experimental synth work. 

Since then, he has released 12”s with Bordello a Parigi, Wilson Records and Blaq Numbers, plus tracks and remixes on esteemed labels such as Toy Tonics and SlothBoogie, continuing to explore new directions in electronic music while staying true to his roots.
 
A passionate collector of records since childhood, Donald balances his studio work with DJing, and remains committed to create music that bridges the nostalgic energy of past decades with fresh, contemporary sounds.

Wrapping up the year with a long awaited follow-up to 2023's Nausea, ENTER PLANET DUST is proud to announce The Muscle and the Sinew 12".

EPD is going full 80s Chicago for label head DONALD DUST’s new collaboration with Argentina's expert slinger of records, knowledge-dropper of all things House, New Beat and Dark Disco, and increasingly decorated Dance record vocalist GALA.

The DJ, producer, co-owner of the FUSION DANCE label and party series, and member of ROMANCE LAYERS is fast establishing herself as a force of good AND a force of nature (and one to be reckoned with) in the international synth-dance club continuum project. 

Working together halfway across the globe, the two have crafted a compelling single touching on the early sounds of Chicago icons like Matt Warren and Razz, with a healthy dose of Euro-Disco and heartbreaking threnodies from the mouths and minds of both parties. Flip the record over for a devilish dub (complete with SFX, synths and satanic laughter) and a stomping beatapella to shake your speakers, courtesy of the ‘Wicked Dub’ and ‘Beat This’ mixes.

Appearing out of nowhere in particular in 2017, Donald Dust's debut EP for No Bad Days and subsequent fleeting cameos for Bordello A Parigi and Paradise Palms introduced the world to his musical sphere: WBMX radio mixes, Ron Hardy drum tracks, the golden era of Italo synths and the rawer fledgling sounds of Eurodisco-influenced House circling and overlapping in his productions and DJ sets.

The new 7" Mars R-Trax mines the depths of Youtube modular synth demos, Adam & Fleisner SFX and disco drum 12"s resulting in a two-part DJ tool for cosmic punks. Mars R-Trax is out in late June on 7" via Enter Planet Dust, distributed by Bordello A Parigi.

Donald Dust returns in 2019 with a brand new double-tracker to follow up last year’s Mars R-Trax 7”. Mangling 70s disco samples with Novaga inspired eletronics and box-banging drums, ‘Surf Domination’ straddles the blurred line between highbrow edit culture and 80s House rawness. ‘Drumination’ dubs things proper, working with an array of broken FX boxes run through Mr. Dust’s tape machine to devastating simplicity.
