One of the most expressive cuts of IN TECHNICOLOR gets a deserved club update with album collaborator ROOSEVELT's revamp of LES DILETTANTES. Originally a slightly no-wavey narrative sporting the idiosyncratic voicework of MIT's Edi Winarni, the track now pushes back its free-form properties for a heavily disco-infused work-out driven by exquisite hooks and a delibarately jam-like mentality. Edi's singing remains largely unchanged, but reveals unexpected glamour within the new context, making this an appropriately flashy addition to IN TECHNICOLOR REMIXE.

ECLECTICS RELEASE This Kitchen Is For Dancing/The Warmth of your Sun By Cole Odin 
Eclectics celebrates its 17th in style, with a release full of invention, ambition and forward momentum. 

Lockdown may have confined us to our homes, but music still takes us somewhere else. It’s a fact not lost on San Francisco DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Cole Odin, who lightens the mood and lifts the spirits with two new tracks: “This Kitchen Is for Dancing” and “The Warmth of your Sun”. 

With “Kitchen” Odin uses looping, motorik momentum and endlessly inventive guitar motifs to create a sonic landscape that’s satisfyingly familiar and yet littered with sonic signposts to new, exotic destinations. It proves that you don’t need decking or bi-fold doors to bring the outdoors indoors – you just need a soundsystem.

Bristol-based producer and DJ Jack Priest puts an elasticated snap back into the beats for his blissful, bass-heavy remix and manages to find an extra minute and a half behind the toaster while he’s at it. Taking the kitchen disco into cosmic territory, the result is flawless, grown-up, slo-mo disco for the discerning dancefloor.  

Odin’s second composition, “The Warmth of your Sun” is a very different beast – the yin to its counterpart’s yang. Everything slows as eyes close – music for lazy days where everything sways. A warm, electric bass buzz offers a scene-setting static hum onto which guitar tones etch out shapes and highlight moods, all the time anchored by the weight of a colossal kickdrum.   Fresh from the success of Cala Tarida Musica’s inaugural 12” (Mikhail Khvasko's “A Vision of Panorama”), label co-founder Adam Warped (Whisky Pickle) takes up the remix reins for “Warmth”. Picking up the pace, he twists and turns the guitar lines into new, decorative shapes to suit his dance-friendly deconstruction, one which pivots perfectly into an undulating, acidic groove. 

It’s a release to keep things locked down on lockdown. Stay safe.

Just over a decade on from the launch of Leng Records, the Simon Purnell/Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy-helmed label is set to release its’ 50th 12” single. Fittingly, it’s the first of a series of sampler EPs that form part of the imprint’s belated 10th anniversary celebrations.

In 2020, label fans will be treated to a celebratory compilation featuring a mixture of Leng classics, overlooked favourites and previously unheard material. Some of this music will also be released on a series of vinyl EPs, with this first volume focusing on unreleased material from long-time friends of the family Q&A and Lex.

Q&A is a collaboration between Phenomenal Handclap Band mainstay Quinn Luke, and long-time friend and musical associate Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of San Francisco dub disco/punk funk heroes Tussle. The pair worked together extensively at the tail end of the 2000s, but only ever released one single: 2009’s “Tumbling Cubes/Trap Door” on celebrated NYC label DFA.

The two tracks showcased on this Leng Records sampler were recorded during the same period as that celebrated single but are only now seeing the light of day. “RM” is a typically low-slung and percussive affair that sees Luke and Georgopoulos wrap bubbly electronic melodies and glassy-eyed aural textures around a suitably weighty dub disco groove. In contrast, “Pulse” is a deliciously hypnotic, mind-altering affair: a bona-fide late night throb-job in which trippy electronic motifs, chiming melodies and crunchy Clavinet riffs vibrate attractively atop another killer punk-funk bassline and locked-in drums.

Over on side B, Athens scene staple Lex takes over. The Greek DJ/producer – real name Alex Andrikopoulos – first rose to prominence locally when he ran the Radical Soundz record shop in the first decade of the century but has since become better-known worldwide for offering up music and DJ sets that frequently join the dots between disco, house and techno.

The two tracks he’s delivered for the Leng 10th birthday sampler series are typically warm, loose and groovy, drawing more inspiration from ‘70s disco and ‘80s electrofunk than contemporary club culture. For proof, first check the mid-tempo sparkle of “GP Score”, an organic disco-boogie number rich in low-slung bass, razor-sharp flanged guitars, colourful synthesizer lead lines, early house style piano solos and the kind of squelchy electronic bass more often featured on kaleidoscopic P-funk records. 

This attractively rubbery synth-bass sound can also be heard on “Max Pen”, a slightly deeper and more laidback affair crafted from an attractive mix of loose-limbed drums, mazy synth solos, jangling piano motifs and sweet, spaced-out chords. Retro-futurist in nature, the track offers further evidence of Lex’s increasingly expressive, funky and musically rich trademark sound.
