You Can Make It (Frank McGing Remix)

'Click on Start' was the title of my self released debut album. I had just arrived home after travelling around America. It was 2005. I brought a notebook full of songs and demos down to Ashville studio, Co Meath, and started recording. Frank McGing was the engineer and studio operator. It was an acoustic singer-songwriter type album, using instruments such as guitars, harmonica, Hammond organ, violin and piano to achieve its 'Folk/Americana' and even 'Gospel' type sound. Laid back and rootsy, Hotpress Magazine wrote, "From the carnival-like background of 'Best For Her' to the honest truths of 'Home' and 'Australia', 'Click on Start' is a beautifully arranged collection of songs". Live versions of the songs were later captured at an intimate gig in The Cherrytree music venue, Dublin. These live recordings were included as extras on 'Dead Man Walking'; an alternative country studio track I recorded in 2008, with some friends and members of 'The Quicksand Band'. We tracked it live and if my memory serves me right, we got it down on the second take. After that, my son was born and I took a break from making music.

In 2012, unaware of its depths, I took a nosedive into the bottomless pit of sound recording. I started out from scratch and invested in Pro Tools (a digital audio workstation) along with a half decent microphone and a whole lot of unanticipated time. In 2013, the singles 'Big Jets Burning' and 'You Can Make It' were conceived and released. These songs were products of my new found discovery of midi, virtual instruments and drum machines.
In 2015, I brought some new songs down to Ashville. I had taken them as far as I could with my current setup. I needed an experienced engineer with pro equipment and I also needed a high end microphone to record the vocals (ie, the Lucas cs-1). Back in the control room with Frank, we decided it was time to get more musicians on board. With friends, Joe Donegan of 'Discopunks' (guitar), Rory Doyle of 'Hozier' (drums) and Bill Blackmore of 'Mixtapes From The Underground' (trumpet), the singles 'Tear Out This Heartache' and 'Skybirds' got the production they needed in order to withstand the flux of todays commercial and social media markets.

I released 'Tear Out This Heartache' in March 2016. It was well received within the media and was added to various playlists on Irish radio.

'Skybirds' was the most recent single. It was released on June 24th, 2016. It featured as one of Nialler9's 'Songs of the Week' in The Irish Times, July 8th, 2016.
