TM404 - SYRA

The evolution of Andreas Tilliander’s moniker TM404 has reached its third stage. The first TM404 album was a heavily self-restricted concept album, live recorded with classic Roland machines. The subsequent album had a more playful vibe, shaped by Tilliander’s extensive live touring. This third TM404 album on Kontra-Musik simply tells the story of what he’s been up to since. The third part of a musical diary, initiated in 2013. 

The TM404 venture might have started out as a dreamy acid dub project, more suited for the chill-out than the main floor. But by popular demand Tillander found himself touring big clubs around the globe and the TM404 sound adapted organically. As a result, the album features tracks like Vactro and Rymdeko: fast paced acidic techno tracks in the same vein as classic Plus 8 releases, but with more space echo. Much more.

But never fear, fans of the classic warm and bubbling TM404 sound. You’ll certainly get yours as well. A substantial portion of this album was recorded in a studio flat in Berlin as part of an artist residency. For obvious reasons, Tilliander could only bring a small portion of his studio gear to this German sanctuary. As a consequence, this album has a more stripped down vibe than its predecessors, which creates more space for Tilliander’s glowing melodies. The last track on the album, a loving homage to Kontra-Musik’s label boss, is a sublime example.

And for the Instagram generation, here’s the short version: The album is called Syra. That translates to Acid. You’re welcome.

Mix 11 comes from an artist who has had an incredible year - KMRU. He has delivered a beautiful and engaging mix of ambient tones and textures. A soothing and fitting final mix for this tumultuous year.

KMRU is a sound artist, experimental ambient musician, based in Nairobi, Kenya. His works deal with discourses of field recording, improvisation, noise,  ambient, machine learning, radio art and expansive hypnotic drones.

He is currently a prospective at Universität der Künste Berlin for sound Studies and Sonic Arts Master's Program, 2020.

KMRUis a regular at Uganda’s Nyegenyege Festival and performed acclaimed sets at Berlin’s CTM(Music Makers Hacklab), Gamma Festival, Mutek Montreal(AI Lab)and Unsound festival(intermission),to name the most notable, and exhibited in Abuja Art Week in Nigeria. He has presented online works for Sonic Agency Festival, inbetweenspaces, Gamma lab XR and ADE 2020.

He earned international acclaim from his ambient works, such as the 2020 full-length Peel released on Editions Mego, ranked ‘Great Records You May Have Missed: Summer 2020’by pitchfork, Jaron Seil records amongst dozens  of self-releases on his Bandcamp.

KMRU  debuted his RA mix in 2020, presents a monthly show on Internet Public Radio, guests on NTS and Rinse FM, organizes workshops for Nairobi Ableton User group, and a core member of Black Bandcamp.

EOTRAX MIX SERIES: #11 KMRU

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

This month we have invited @jinsynth to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero-patriarchal systems of oppression.

Jin is a DJ and synthesizer performer who mixes elements of ambient and techno. Her performances focus on creating artistic abstraction through the use of experimental sounds and analogue noises, to provide audiences with a deeper perception of music.
