“Paralyzed” was composed during late nights by Jeroen Tel (WAVE) and Thomas Mogensen (DRAX) of Maniacs of Noise. The tune builds around the chromatic movements of the main chord theme. We tried to capture  the feeling of being desperately stuck in a situation where -no matter what you do- you can’t seem to do the right thing. The name of the song, “Paralyzed”, refers to an emotional state of feeling desperately paralyzed even to the extent of claustrophobia.

Somewhere in the sea of darkness, the remnants of the S3M-32 interstellar reconnaissance rocket glittered in hyperspace. There had been the scream of the alarm, the tearing of metal, and then the explosion—the four rookie scouts, secure in their emergency pods, had been ripped from the chaos of the ruined ship and scattered like light through a prism.

One by one, with the inevitability of time and speed, the pull of a strange blue planet wrapped invisible hands around their capsules and drew them down to the foreign soils and alien buildings of the surface. Each stepped out of the smoking pods, stepped out into a world of bizarre creatures and unknown words. Utterly isolated and far beyond the farthest interstellar comm links, they began to teach the strange civilization their language.

In time, Headquarters recovered the scouts’ reports, written and murmured into the pod’s computer banks in the hopes that someday someone might find them. The distant capsules were only found thanks to the tracer module in each ship…

I've been thinking about making a remix of the end theme from Nintendo's MarioKart 64 for nearly two decades now, and it finally came to fruition. The original is pretty massive, so of course this one is a little heavy too, but hopefully it came out all right.

Used nearly all my gear on this one plus loads of samples from the game - obviously. Figured I had to use the last sample from Mario, even though I've already used it on 8-Bit Voyager.

I wanted to play with some of my FM synthesizers and plugins from reFX Nexus 2 (FM1 and FM2) and change the tempo down a little from what I usually compose in. Heavily influenced by pop songs from the 80s merged with a little this and that.

In the series of doing famous game soundtracks and songs on various older sought after synths and modules, I give you the original Duke Nukem 3D Theme, done entirely on a Roland Super JX (except the drums of course). I had a little slow start on this one, and it was mainly due to trouble programming sounds on the MKS-70 and that Lee Jackson's original contains a bit of muddy phrasings causing a lot of rumble in the low frequencies. I took the liberty of cleaning those up and change them slightly and adding some extra parts to give the song some length. However, I see now that I've done the song, that there IS a full version out of the original "Grabbag" song: http://leejacksonaudio.lbjackson.com/html/download.html

Ah, well... what's done is done. Hope you enjoy this version too and have a good time whacking those aliens that take or women! Time to kick some serious ass, and remember to bring enough gum!

Duke Nukem 3D On Roland Super JX (MKS-70)

Electronic musician from Norway. I started playing piano/keyboards in the mid 80s. After a few years at the municipal music school, I quickly grew tired of the simple piano-only education and got to move on to classes with keyboards and synths. From the early beginning with Technics K-200 rhythm keyboard from 1983 via some Casios/Hohner keyboards, I evolved with the later Technics KN-1000 and KN-2000 before moving on to Roland XP-50. As the computer revolution made DAWs affordable, 1999 made sequencing using Cubase easy and the studio grew ever larger with more outboard gear. Today the studio has become a sizeable and functional MIDI/arranging studio with over 40 synths/modules and more centered around a MacPro with MOTU’s Digital Performer, and numerous more or less famous productions.

I have always had a musical approach towards sound engineering and composing, rooted mainly in vivid harmonic structures and saturated compositions. Inspiration has always been the likes of Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Eric Serra to name a few giants in the electronic scene, but also a heart towards well produced pop music from the 70s and 80s as well as epic film scores from John Williams, Alan Silvestri and Hans Zimmer. The baby era of computer music from the late 80s and early 90s was also a heavy influence.
