ambient/etc 006 - Vietnamese ambient & experimental

My set for the renegade Garden Stage at Pachena Bay Music Festival 2024 is a downtempo mix that spans from deep ambient, astral jazz, to some experimental, downtempo breaks and beats. I love every track I played, each having its own beautiful sonic journey.

This was such a magical venue and location to perform with the most wonderful people. Thank you to the Huu-ay-aht First Nations, organizers, volunteers, and performers who made this festival possible. The microphone was accidentally left on and I love how faint sprinkles of laughter weave in and out of the set.

Label SYS Sister Sounds (SSS) releases all Asian female and non-binary compilation ‘Unity,’ with all proceeds going to Palestine charity PARA Foundation.

The compilation houses production from 7 Asian music producers from all around the world including Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, China, Netherlands, Thailand and Canada, Uniting together to release a compilation that binds Asian diaspora together for a good cause.

With heartfelt storytelling and compelling sonic productions, genres include, dance, electronic, house, hip hop and ambient from producers Maggie Tra, nabii, Zeadala, masheen, ephemeral objects, DWAMS featuring earthangelbaby and Ambu Bambu.

On the compilation, SSS founder Maggie Tra said, “As Asian artists’ today, we feel so helpless with what’s going on. Music is what we know, so we wanted to connect together and release something that could go towards helping the people in need,”

“I feel so grateful to have these producers jump on board on this, this is what SSS is all about, and that’s the beauty of uniting together. We want to send a message of hope and togetherness,” she said.

This is the second compilation released by SSS, with the first compilation ‘Grounded’ released in 2023. SYS Sister Sounds Label is run by Maggie Tra and aims to release music from Asian women and NB people around the world.

The label has emerged as a trusted discovery platform, which promotes curiosity, diversity, inclusivity and connection. Profits from the compilation will go towards charity PARA Foundation, an organisation based in Australia. Palestine Australia Relief and Action (PARA) helps Palestinian migrants and refugees live safe, happy, and fulfilling lives in Australia.

We are so excited to present our 32nd entry into our PPRZ Podcast series by ephemeral objects! Dive into this hour + of deep, textured and thoughtfully selected techno. 

ephemeral objects is a DJ, VJ, music producer, digital and video artist based on unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations (Vancouver, Canada). She has created music videos for forward-thinking Canadian electronic music producers and labels, such as Mood Hut and NAGA. She has performed visuals at influential music venues and festivals throughout British Columbia. ephemeral objects is also half of i+eo an a/v project with IHA, and a resident of Acceleration Radio. Her love of dance music and interest in DJing started in childhood in the late 90s and early 2000s when she stayed up late religiously watching Electric Circus on MuchMusic, the legendary Canadian live dance music show. One of her earliest electronic music purchases was Eiffel 65’s Europop album in grade 4 from HMV in Metrotown, Burnaby, which laid the groundwork for a lifelong appreciation of techno and its various permutations. It wasn’t until recently after finishing graduate school that she revisited and indulged in her interest in DJing, which is now a creative outlet that brings her fulfilment and joy.

My process/mix
This mix captures the type of techno that I deeply appreciate and a space I want to stay in for a while. I love the intentional listening aspect that comes with mixes. I tend to start with ambient/experimental as foreplay for listeners. The mix gradually gets faster, ending with one of my favourite techno-trance tunes that feels like a homage to the early 2000s. I approach DJing similarly to how I approach VJing: psychedelic, hypnotic, euphoric, paying special attention to details, and layering of textures. The beauty of DJing is sculpting moments where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. For me, this is achieved through looping, long blends, and complementing different phrases of tracks. I recorded this mix at home with a DJJ-FLX10 using four decks. Although I mostly mix with three, I use the extra deck to quickly cue the next track to sustain momentum.

I carefully think about the music that I play. I believe that who we choose to play is a vote for who we want to see in music. For this reason, I strive to curate sets to ensure a diverse representation of people, especially producers and labels by femmes and people of colour. Lately, I have been excited by producers and labels from across the Pacific and from the diaspora, which is exemplified in this mix. Big shoutout to Lord Loubbit and CTAFAD for sharing their unreleased music with me. In a small way, I aspire to add more representation in the space of techno that I love, so that others who are also queer, femme, and come from immigrant refugee backgrounds can see themselves in it too. Sagga is ephemeral objects’ debut in the realm of dub ambient. In Buddhism, sagga is a term for heaven, a blissful realm of existence where beings are reborn after death as a result of their past actions. ephemeral objects is a Chinese-Vietnamese-Canadian interdisciplinary artist, sound artist, VJ, DJ based on unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, also known as Vancouver, Canada. She produces ambient, experimental, noise, and drone inspired music.

True to her name, her visual creations carry this sense of ethereality, focusing on textures and organic forms, both ephemeral and suspended in time at once. She merges generative videos with real footage to create her own unique, audio-reactive and abstract style where rich colours, spanning the full spectrum, wash over the screen, streaking the viewer’s mind with a strong image of the audio-visual journey at play. ephemeral objects has created music videos for forward-thinking Canadian electronic music labels, such as Mood Hut and NAGA. She is half of i+eo an audio/visual duo project with her collaborator IHA.

She is also a resident of Acceleration Radio, an open format FM radio, live stream, and events collective focusing on audio/visual experimentation, where she can fully dive into her interdisciplinary interests. In 2024, she was invited as one of ten emerging Canadian artists to participate in MUTEK Montréal's first Incubator program.

Officer Linh has been restless since first contact; claims she hears "whispermurmurhums" in the static. I told her to lay off the stimulants.

In rapid oscillation, I watch my future hand adjust controls I haven't touched yet. The aft camera shows my past self still debating entry. When I scream, the sound arrives before my mouth opens.

They warned us about spaghettification –- they never mentioned illumination… My atoms are learning new alphabets. The light is writing scriptures across my dissolving flesh.
