When the Russian military occupied Yahidne in Chernihiv region, they drove the locals into the basement of the school. “We went there, looked into the gym, into the biggest room – it was hell. You enter, and the first impression is that you are entering hell,” says Olga, a resident of Yahidne. By taking them hostage, russians made a “human shield” and placed their headquarters on other floors of the school.

More than 350 people were in the basement without ventilation – old women and children. Toilet time was limited, instead buckets were placed for people. A few days later, the first man died in the basement. “There was not enough oxygen. The man was losing his mind. And they screamed and screamed, and as they say, people went crazy,” says Ivan Pulyuy. Bodies were not always allowed to be taken out immediately, sometimes children played next to the deceased. The locals were in such conditions for almost a month. Ten elderly people died. Seven more were shot by the russians. The film, based on the diary of one of the hostages, reproduces the gruesome details of the russian war crime. Journalists managed to identify the russian units that turned the residents of Yahidne into “human shields” and to communicate with the russian officer involved in the crime.

On the morning of March 4, 2022, three young friends in a civilian car delivering food to an animal shelter were shot by the russian military in Bucha, Kyiv region.

Investigating surveillance video, UA:PBC journalists recreated the chronology of events and identified the russian soldiers that were present at the scene at the time of shooting.

February 24, 2022. The darkest day of Ukraine's history. Russian troops are entering Ukraine from occupied Crimea, Russia and Belarus. Thousands of towns and villages are under threat. The Chykmariov family, having moved to Bucha, away from the war in Donbas, hides in the basement. On March 5, the Chykmariovs and their neighbors decide to leave the city in two cars. On Lech Kaczynski Street, they drive right into the path of a column of Pskov paratroopers. Two civilian cars are shot at. Without warning or inspection. Marharyta Chykmariova, her two sons and a neighbor are killed. Olexander Chykmariov lost his leg but survived. In 2023 a key witness emerges in the case. A year after this horrible war crime, we have a chance
to learn the names of those who pulled the trigger.

It Will Haunt You

Thousands of people in Ukraine, whose relatives gone missing, are waiting for the results of the DNA examination of the remains. Ukrainian DNA laboratories are unable to handle numerous examinations. Investigators, loaded with other cases, do not have time or forget to carry them out in time. And relatives do not have the opportunity to say goodbye and try to live on. No country in the world would probably be able to cope with such a challenge.

In an investigative documentary "Queue to Say Goodbye", journalists find out whether Ukraine used all the chances to reduce the painful list of those waiting for the results of a DNA examination.

Music by Alexander Stratonov from "Maple: To Identify a War Criminal" investigative documentary soundtrack.

Thanks to a video published by the Russian propagandist and singer Yulia Chichierina, journalists are on the trail of a Russian officer who was wanted for more than a year as being responsible for the atrocities in Yahidne, Chernihiv region. There, 366 villagers were held hostage for 27 days in the basement of the school, ten of them died during this detention. Now journalists know what a Russian soldier with the call sign "Maple" looks like, and can search for him with the help of artificial intelligence. But the task turns out to be much more difficult than they expected. In the documentary detective, you will discover the specifics of the search for war criminals, the intricacies of working under a legend, and what Russian officers are willing to do to avoid responsibility for war crimes.

Threads of Ember

I'm an experienced video, audio and everything in between specialist with 18 years of experience in television, radio broadcasting, motion design, video production and media composing. I currently work as the Head of Production of the Investigative Documentary Department at UA:PBC (Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine).

I started making music in the early 2000s, mostly in the trip-hop genre. I played bass guitar in alternative rock band "acloneofmyown" (2005-2015) and electric guitar in post-hardcore band "The Sky is Red" (2006-2009).

Since 2022 I've started producing solo music and soundtracks for documentaries in various genres - from piano and neo-classical to electronic ambient.
