Our Voice Is A Weapon

#RIPBillWithers  100% my total inspiration for learning sampling and beat making.  I clearly remember being in my mother's old green Plymouth Volare riding over the bridge near Wellington Station when Ain't No Sunshine came on the old 2 knob fm radio when I asked my mother who is this and what is the name of this song.  I was somewhere between 8 and 10 years old at the time.  The song stuck with me for years to when I was about 12 to 13 years old when my friend Brian asked if I could get or make some instrumentals for him.  I had an old basic midi and burning program where I had taught myself the basics of cutting and splicing and looping.   I would use the intros and outros of songs , the parts with no vocals, to form loops and beats and instrumental tracks long enough for him to rap over.   I remember bringing a cd of about 15 random "beats" which were nothing more than sampled loops over to his house and we recorded in his basement on his younger sisters karaoke machine that would record onto cassette.    That tape still lingers around somewhere out there, I would love to get my hands on it and digitize it for everyone to hear how far along we've come.  Anyway over the next few years I developed my skills in overlaying drums and bass and synths and building full tracks and eventually moving onto originals rather than sample based production just in favor of the ease of commercially releasing music which didn't require so much legal legwork of granting permission of use and a ton less overall cost in most cases.  But with the Bill Withers song still in my mind all this time throughout my self training and learning it was one of the earliest songs I sampled.   Here's the beat that turned out with a little tweaking to boost the sound a tad but with the original still in tact.  There's nothing else changed to the first version's structure and sounds but the old version was just too low and dry to hear very well.
