'James Harcourt lands at Renaissance on an absolute tear. In just this year alone he’s seen a track hammered by Tale Of Us (Beholden); released on luminary imprints such as Sincopat, Selador and Parquet and been remixed by indie-titan, Musumeci! Reach a little further back in the discography and the plaudits continue... he’s clearly a producer in undeniable ascent.

Now he returns to Renaissance following a stellar debut on their Merin VA series with their first, full EP together, which is a diverse, 4-track player that pinpoints James’ unique sound and meticulous production. Yet, his inspirations and influences may come as a shock, “At the time of writing the tracks I hadn’t set foot in a club for nearly 4 years – even if there’s the pandemic to factor!”, he explains, “I just couldn’t find much of the music I wanted from old-skool promo trawling, digital sites and record shops; I realised that if I wanted to create those moments I was looking for, the magic, dancefloor spark you only get at festivals, clubs and parties - that I should get on and make it myself.”

So, with a clear objective, the Quartz EP was born with the dancefloor firmly in mind. Whether the peak-time power of Trust Me With Your Heart, the melodic stylings of Sister and Spellbound, or the emotive breaks of title track Quartz, James paints a musical picture that’s full of power and beauty, “I was looking to fire up those moments in the witching hour when the music is enough to tip you from caving-in to raving the early hours away, eventually emerging to reality in the daylight hours!”, he enthuses.

The EP gets a further diversity-injection courtesy of Mr Morek, who brings a shimmer of indie class to Touch Me With Your Heart. “I wanted to approach writing this remix from outside the box,” he says, “I set myself the task to experiment a little, yet still deliver a track that can harmoniously cross genres and fit in a wide selection of DJ sets.”'

The veteran Brazilian producer Gui Boratto has always had a way with musicality and drama in his music.

This EP for Zatar displays a lot of the things we have come to expect from him - rich instrumentation, lots of melody, and a deep, emotional take on dance music.

The original version Déjeuner Sur L ́Herbe combines a chugging groove with pianos, guitars and thick bass - a full movie sound- track in one piece.

CIOZ and Fairplay provide the remix duties for the 2nd version, teasing out the ele- ments over 8 and a half minutes, and twis- ting it into a psychedelic epic.

Johannes Albert also provides a rework, dialing into a more machine funk vibe while letting the groove breathe.

Berlin based artist Franz Matthews teams up with Berny of In Dark We Trust to join Roam Recordings with their single What’s Behind - a hypnotic melodic offering with Franz Matthews’ vocals taking it into the cosmos. The single is backed by remixes from Alejandro Molinari and Elfenberg. Roam alum Alejandro Molinari is up first and takes What’s Behind further into spacey territory accentuating the original melodies with lush cosmic overtones. Elfenberg brings up the tempo with a jackin’ beat while keeping true to the hypnotic nature of the original. The release is rounded out by an instrumental and radio version.

And just like that we hit TAU No. 50! To celebrate this milestone what else could we do but gather up an elite squad of our closest comrades, new and old, to deliver a huge new instalment of our Spektrum series. 

Spektrum 5 continues TAU’s quest to present the highest quality retro-futurism we can find, with an assorted cast of supremely talented artists all bringing their A-game for our beloved followers. 

So, here’s a breakdown of what to expect from this mouthwatering new compilation…

INVŌKER - Ipanema Maneira

A reworking of the original Villa Chord and Friday by two friends from Organica Sound, other musical views and concepts, other styles and sound constructions.

Alexander Siva - Villa Chord (Eraser Remix)

Greek wizard @echonomist arrives on @tautautauofficial with the ‘Modern Wonder’ EP, featuring three original cuts and a remix from @ditian. Echonomist hasbeen deep in the game for a long while and it’s safe to say he is Greece’s top DJ and producer of our times. He is an all-rounder who can DJ, produce and perform live with confidence and panache. After his exciting contribution to Dixon’s Transmoderna release alongside tracks by Ame, Trikk and others, ‘Modern Wonder’ sees Echonomist‘s debut with the TAU family.
Opening with ‘Eyes, the EP gets off to a dramatic start as moody synth lines and a driving bassline take us into the new wave zone. Echonomistdemonstrates his flair for arrangement here, with a carefully arranged track that could almost have been performed by a band. The atmosphere is gloomy and emotive, taking us for a ride into the night as flickering neon reflects off the rain covered streets in a sleazy part of town.
The title track is next, raising the energy levels somewhat with punchy beats and a searing atmosphere. Female singer Iokatsi delivers a brief vocal over the breakdown before the track continues with its melancholy yet heartfelt narrative.
‘The Touch’ follows, taking us further into realms of synth heaven. The main riff is gnarly, with electro-fied beats and a simple yet catchy rhythm. Echonomist adds a perfectly placed synth way up high to complement the low end, creating uplifting moments that juxtapose the gruff bassline.
Finally Ditian’s ‘Snake’ remix of ‘Modern Wonder’ closes the EP. This a deep, dubby rework with heavy emphasis on the bass to begin with. Ditian takes the main vocal and chops it into pieces, using “You’re trapped” to increase the tense, chilling atmosphere. Detuned piano keys add to themacabre feeling as Ditian rolls out a nasty, haunting rework.
