Duck N' Cover Records is proud to announce the release of one of the most anticipated vinyl E.P.'s 2013 for the global Footwork world and everyone interested in the development of up to date exciting and demanding electronic music. From EQ Why, formerly known as DJ T-Why, the artist gloriously featured on Planet Mu's legendary compilation Bangs & Works Volume 2 with three among the most memorable tracks of the whole selection, including the eternal "Orbits", comes this masterpiece called "Enter The Why Volume 1", subtitled "You Got It".

Written and produced in one of the epicenters of the scene, the Chicago Southside, this music comes straight from the eye of the storm. Daring, provocative, at the same time chaotic and completely static, futuristic but totally rooted and earthed in americas rich black dance music tradition, the rawness of this music is only delivered by the likes of the hardest and coldest producers currently at the top of their game, e.g. RP Boo, Traxman, or Jlin, just to name a few. Being himself a part of D'Dynamic, the group formed by RP Boo, this record bears the seal of highest quality.

This is most definitely battle music in it's purest form, made for those circles where one crew fights the other. Yet there is one track that crosses over, allowing itself to be a total summer hit for 2013, the track called "808 Kick Drum". Being stone cold footwork still, it is so universal that it is playable on so many dancefloors of varying styles, just magical. Containing a seminal super sweet vocal line, alongside a hook that everybody in the room will immediately start to chat along, yet keeping the general rawness factor at a high level similar to the other tunes presented here, no one but EQ Why would be able to lay it down like this. This is a number one hit single!

All of the other tracks have a very special power to them as well, each in a very distinctive and different style, showing the stunning diversity that EQ Why was able to claim for himself over the 12 years since he started producing beats, while always remaining true to his very signature style. "Invasion" ponders through big band territory, "Overdose On Marijuana" is the funkiest tune you heard since long, "Get Down & Bang" is 100% Chicago rawness, "Going Crazy" a magnificent cut up galore, and finally "AIDS" comes with an important message.

The footwork formula is a confounding one. Stock 808 drum kit sounds, vocal chops and sample loops are a slim recipe, yet fresh takes from the limited ingredients turn up every day, 2 decades on. Switch the emphasis from the rhythms to the melodies and you suddenly have a different genre. Juke Pack Vol 1 is the embodiment of less is more. Toms bounce along to Megan Thee Stallion, moody, muffled, choppy piano chords underneath. Hypnotic chants of ‘shake it’ over growling bass, pounding toms and infinite claps. Haunting guitars over sinister raps. The foundations make it clear EQ Why is a Chicago native, and the subtle tradition additions like skittering hi-hats show the production experience. It’s not easy to get into for new listeners – it’s un-apologetically raw in style, and the focus on rhythm might be a bit much if you’re never explored these BPMs before - yet that’s exactly what the OG footwork sound is all about. It’s all over in 15 minutes, and each entry is begging to tear up the dance floor arena on the regular. It’s essential listening for footwork fanatics.

EQ Why bridges the Chicago footwork scene and the experimental music underground with his raw, abstract tracks. While his tracks retain the fast, choppy tempos and aggressive, sometimes sexually explicit vocal samples typical of juke and footwork, he often incorporates jungle-influenced breakbeats and more offbeat samples. His work stylistically draws a line between footwork's Chicago home base and its stranger Japanese variation, as reflected by EQ Why's Chitokyo Mixtape from 2013. 

Originally going by the name DJ T-Why, Tyrone Smith was affiliated with Bosses of the Circle, a footwork collective (founded by DJ Roc in 2005) that later included artists such as Young Smoke and Jlin. All of these artists were featured on Planet Mu's Bangs & Works, Vol. 2 compilation in 2011, which included three selections by T-Why. He released a few mixtapes under this name before changing his moniker to EQ Why in 2012. Starting with that year's Equalized EP, he began releasing a staggering amount of music online. 

The 12" EP Enter the Why, Vol. 1: You Got It was released by Duck N' Cover Records in July of 2013. This was shortly followed by The Dynamic Time, a CD issued by the Japanese label Booty Tune, and Chitokyo Mixtape, an intense 60-tracks-in-60-minutes cassette released by the experimental label Orange Milk. EMC2, a split EP by EQ Why and DJ Elmoe, appeared digitally in late 2014. The full-length World Relief, featuring collaborations with DJ Roc, followed in 2015. Several digital albums, including Cold World and BattleGroundz, were released in 2017. 

EQ Why had another prolific year in 2018, as Orange Milk released WhyTrax (a collaboration with Traxman) and the experimental EP Spring Steeze (with Diamond Soul) was released by Bedlam Tapes, in addition to solo releases such as Back to the Block and Make the Feet Go Around.
