Ireland based American songsmith Peter Broderick announces the release of Piano Works Vol. 1 (Floating in Tucker’s Basement) — a new comprehensive album of solo piano recordings out November 25, sharing first offering Sonata for the Sirius. Shining a light on the artist’s ongoing piano-based compositions, this release offers an opportunity to celebrate his more intimate work.

A comprehensive collection of Peter Broderick’s piano work to date, these recordings were originally captured in Berlin to accompany the 2017 sheet music book Piano Works Vol. 1. The book contains 20 pieces for solo piano and a download code to access new recordings of all 20 pieces. Up until now, the only way to hear these recordings was to purchase the sheet music book.

This release sees the original recordings receiving further treatment and processing by Tucker Martine in the customised echo chamber of his studio in Portland, Oregon—the region where Broderick grew up. The clean and unaffected original recordings were intended for educational purposes, so for this release Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths suggested to ‘throw the recordings into the well’, for a more dynamic and conscious listening experience.

“We gave these recordings a bit of a makeover. We sent all the tracks over to legendary engineer/producer Tucker Martine, who processed all 20 of them with unique tape and reverb treatments, utilising the echo chamber of his Portland studio, Flora Recording & Playback,” explains Broderick.




Now these recordings are set to be released on double vinyl, double CD and all digital platforms. The opening piece and lead single Sonata for the Sirius is the only composition in this entire collection which cannot be found on any other release.

“It was during a stint as Artist in Residence at the Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, Ireland that I began to take stock of all my piano compositions to date. Late into the night I would sit at the piano, trying to recall all that I’ve written on the instrument over the years, transcribing and notating these compositions for the first time, getting them out of my head and onto paper. At some point during this process a new piece emerged. Sonata for the Sirius seemed an apt title, in its homage to the place where it was written, but also in the greater context of Sirius — a star ridden with myth. Not to mention the fact that ‘Sirius’ comes out the mouth like ‘serious’, and the idea of a Sonata for the Serious, in my mind, is rather hilarious.”

Peter continues to tour with a handful of live dates coming up in Ireland and the UK. Starting with a show in Galway, sharing the bill with his dear old friend Shelley Short. Followed by a string of dates in the UK including the long awaited, sold out Hidden Notes Festival in Stroud, a return to Coventry at Draper's Hall, and his first ever concert in Chester at St Mary's Creative Space. October 15 sees him perform at Amplifest in Porto, and on November 5 he'll be celebrating 15 years of Erased Tapes with a one-day-festival at Printworks in London.

For over two decades Bjørke has cut his own path, as a solo artist and enthusiastic collaborator. Even a cursory listen exposes an impressive, ever-evolving career. However, few expected him to initiate the collaborative ambient / neo-classical project Kasper Bjørke Quartet. In 2018 The Fifty Eleven Project was released on Kompakt Records and the album topped many critics' lists, and was included among The Guardian’s Best Contemporary Albums of the year.

Mother, represents a quantum leap forward. Literally, when you consider the terrestrial shifts that informed it. Six compositions explore what the evolution of our planet sounds like and spans a timeframe from 4.5 billion years ago up to humankind’s impending demise. It hints at how that may be sooner than we think, as well as the earth’s resilience, and the promise of another chapter. 

“Formation” condenses 20 million years of runaway accretion into 20 minutes. It is sublimely padded by feature artist Sofie Birch’s gentle synths. “Abiogenesis” intimates a different type of emergence: the first life to inhabit our nascent planet. The entire cosmos is condensed into the layered choir of Philip|Schneider. Birch returns on “Miocene,” which signals the divergence of proto-humans from primates not with foreboding, but rather cascaded notes and swells adumbrating a pure and curious being, revealing nothing of what the Catch-22 of knowledge will bring. That’s addressed in the diptych of “Anthropocene” and “Tipping Points,” respectively marking the dawn and foreshadowing the probable downfall of homosapians, through wondrous advancements and their climate damaging byproducts. It’s tempting to think the album’s finale, “Requiem,” implies only a dark conclusion, owing to its sparkling verrillon’s coronach, and the return of Philip|Schneider’s empyrean vocals, but its juxtaposition with revolving, enigmatic piano chords infers the earth will enter its next act. 

Mother is a staggering achievement, encouraging contemplative thought.

- Davide Rossi (Violin, viola, cello) has collected multiple Grammys,and has studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen and Robert Fripp. He is without parallel as a modern arranger, having worked with Kanye, Alicia Keys, Frank Ocean, Moby, Jon Hopkins, The Verve, Goldfrapp, to name a select few, but may be best known for his long standing relationship with Coldplay.

- Claus Noreen (Synthesizers) has been active in Danish electronic and pop circles for years, as both musician and producer, currently under his brand new Langstrakt moniker.

- Jakob Littauer (Piano) Musician / Composer / Producer who works with artists including Mø and CTM.

- Mathias Friis-Hansen & David Hildebrandt (Marimba on Anthropocene) Versatile, classical musicians, both part of the award winning PACE Percussion Trio.

- Sofie Birch (Features with additional synths on Formation and Miocene) Musician, producer and NTS resident Sofie Birch is a rising artist on the ambient scene. Her new album Holotropica has been praised by the music press, incl. Pitchfork.

- Philip|Schneider (Features with vocals on Abiogenesis and Requiem) Celebrated performance duo Josephine Philip and Hannah Schneider who is known for their seductive spatial voice compositions that engage the body, ears and mind.

The big cheese of dub-forms has not ceased to wander through well-paced mystifications, leaving unique patterns on the canvas of the world stage since the beginning of this century. Suspended in the air, an almost weightless terry downtempo is made from layers of the tape echo effect and the bass depth. Going back to its roots, the Cologne master pays tribute to the percussion and rhythm structure.

A Pool of Clouds (Ambient Mix)

Bersarin Quartett is not exactly comprised of a group of four people but is actually a project of a single mind that is of a  German electronic musician Thomas Bücker. I have been a huge fan of Bücker’s gorgeous compositions since his 2008 self-titled debut, which he released on Lidar. Four years later, he was picked up by the beloved Denovali Records, which has consistently appeared on these pages with their unique aesthetic that spans a variety of genres. And so I covered and praised this follow-up simply titled II, and then, in 2015, III, and then, in 2019, [finally] with a more memorable name, Methoden Und Maschinen. Suffice it to say that every single one of these releases ended up on my respective Best of the Year selections. So it should be of no surprise that I’m excited about Bersarin Quartett’s newly announced 5th album, coming out on December 15th [hey, journalists and bloggers, hit that pause on the publication of your favourites of the year!] titled Systeme. I’ve listened to the album many times now, and I can tell you that as an entire package, it brings together all my favourite elements of this particular contemporary genre and, of course, that of Bersarin Quartett’s. “While it still sounds popularly symphonic here and there, there are also many soundscapes that have an observing, almost unmasking effect.” This is particularly fascinating in Bücker’s more than successful attempt at electronic bass music, where he joins the ranks of another favourite musician of mine, Ben Lukas Boysen, seemingly blending neo-classical with neo-electronic styles, as will be evident in today’s exclusive track premiere.

Ein Track im Rahmen des Projekts "Gemeine Stadt" von der Berliner Landeszentrale für politische Bildung in Kooperation mit Sabrina Dittus & metroZones e.V.

Das Tempo dieses Tracks entspricht einem entspannten Spaziergang durch die Stadt – mit Kopfnicken und dicken Kopfhörern. Ausgangsmaterial sind eigene Field-Recordings des Straßenverkehrs von Bangalore, Südindien. Motoren von Tuctucs, den dreirädrigen Rikschas der Stadt, knattern im langsamen Zweitakt und wurden so geschnitten, dass sie den Beat rhythmisch begleiten. Wir hören die Stimmen von Straßenverkäufern, einem Muezzin und Vögeln in den Bäumen am Straßenrand. Der Beat steht mit beiden Füßen fest auf dem Asphalt und hält die Kakophonie lässig an der Hand.
