Zooberry Jam‘s the one collection for which folks still hold some fondness, perhaps because the artists included — Liberation, Hummingbird, Karen Bella, Uncle Rainbow, Synthesis, Bees Knees and Pyramid — were once popular enough to merit inclusion on a record, only to fade from the footnotes all these years later. (One thing I noticed last night, while listening to the whole album: Every band sounded like it was fronted by either Boz Scaggs, Joni Mitchell, Michael McDonald or Phoebe Snow.) I had to ask KZEW vet and local music-history god George Gimarc this morning: Was the Liberation on Zooberry Jam the same band that, in 1970, briefly counting among its members a young Stevie Ray Vaughan? He went to check the master tapes — which he rescued from the trash heap, along with Toomer’s original album artwork — and found no personnel listing. But he did find an unreleased cover of “Heard It on the X.”

Uncle Rainbow was this close to breaking big, having decamped Dallas for California shortly after Zooberry Jam‘s release. Wrote one critic in ’98, “Uncle Rainbow was the kind of band that should have made it — a feather-haired white-soul combo with roots in the Young Rascals’ sound, which could make chameleonic shifts between Earth, Wind & Fire-like harmonies, Pat Simmons-era Doobies waterbed-rock guitar skronk and a Steely Dan-style penchant for weird chord progressions.” Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
