 Closing Down

The bars are closing down,
 and at each end of the town
  the hostile hackles rise,
   and storm clouds thump across the sky.
	
    The half-pint screamer cries
     as something brave inside him dies;
      no matter what he wills  
       life seems a black and bitter pill.

        Somewhere in the hills,
         some old friend is standing still
          and thinking, still, of me~ 
           some old vision that he sees.

            All at once his eye is keen; 
             he looks at what he hasn’t seen
              and he knows me, instantly,
               as the man I aimed to be;

                and all the pomp and piety
                 that never meant a thing to me
                  shudders to the floor,
                   with an ostentatious roar.

                    Though pitiful and poor,
                     there are small truths you can’t ignore
                      when you see them in the glass,
                       so drink well, before they pass.
 
                        And when the brew fills you, at last,
                         you have to find the essence fast
                          for the bars are closing down;
                           the bars are closing down.
