Cued Recall

Written for harp and live electronics, this piece was inspired by the Young-Helmholtz Theory (or trichromatic theory), which suggests that the human eye perceives color via three main types of photoreceptors. These receptors respond to different wavelengths of light (red, green, and blue), the combinations of which form a full spectrum of color. To capture this idea musically, the harp material is divided into three distinct pitch regions, with the central region being detuned to match the harmonic series (on C). The electronics, and their operator, respond in real time to the sound from the harp, serving both to accentuate the differences in register and to begin to blend them together. These regions converge, overlap, and break apart again as the piece progresses, beginning and ending in the detuned central region of the harp.

Motions Unseen is a reflection on motions and movements through time. We intuitively know that sound exists beyond our vision, oscillating through the air, unnoticed only by our sense of hearing, inviting listeners to consider how sound oscillates through the air. Just as particles in the continuously collide and interact in order to create sound, the sound resynthesizes in the air to organically create new sound that reverberates throughout the orchestra.

A Lively Afternoon at a Public Park

Written for a mixed quintet, this set of four miniature movements was inspired by an exhibition at the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, England. This exhibition, titled “Masterpieces in Miniature,” was installed in 2021 and featured a model art gallery with curated rooms displaying miniature artworks from notable British artists. This piece examines just one room of the model gallery, and the four miniature paintings contained within:

Four Pieces for Pallant House

Written for a mixed sextet of flute, trumpet, electric guitar, harp, piano, and double bass, the music of TREMOR is centered around a series of large ensemble "impacts", which are followed by ever-increasing periods of rhythmic reverberation and pulsation. These tremors grow in strength as the piece progresses, culminating in a chaotic and forceful overlapping "riff" which falls apart in the wake of several final impacts.

TREMOR was written as part of the Riot Ensemble Sextet Project at the Royal Academy of Music, in collaboration with Aaron Holloway-Nahum and the Riot Ensemble.

Written for the Steingraeber Transducer Piano, Drift is loosely inspired by the gradual shifting of various vast natural phenomena, such as glaciers, icebergs, weather patterns, and plate tectonics. The piece begins in a standard “equal temperament” tuning, and slowly and randomly drifts out of tune as the piece progresses. At its climax, this randomized tuning begins to crystallize into a new, more ordered tuning system, gradually taking on a new sound and shape as the piece progresses.

Drift

This song was written in response to Charles Ives’ Mists, the 57th of his 114 Songs. This song was written to precede Charles Ives’ “Mists”, which may be performed immediately afterward, without pause, if desired. This piece sets the first two lines of Ives’ original text, found below:
Low lie the mists; they hide each hill and dell;
The grey skies weep with us who bid farewell.
