Choco above the waves

Today, I saw Arctic terns for the first time this summer.

Transcript, because some words are almost inaudible...
In the book A River Runs through It and Other Stories, Norman MacLean wrote “I am haunted by waters.“ That line always resonated with me. He wrote it about big rivers in Montana. I’ve never been to Montana. I’ve never spent a lot of time on really big rivers. For me, it’s the ocean…the “waters” in that line. I stand here, down on my beach. It’s about 5 am. I haven’t slept pretty much all night. I think I slept about 2 hours.
I don’t really know what I want to say.
The ocean feels so endless. Endlessly powerful. Timelessly beautiful. It affects the sky. It affects the land…everything in it; everything on it. Clearly, it affects me.
I love the colors and the textures of it. The movement. And the sounds.
I can’t imagine that there are millions, probably, of people who have never seen the ocean…or heard it. Never felt it on their skin. It blows me away. I feel sad for those people. They’ve never heard these rocks roll around like this.
When was the last time that you just went and sat by the water? I don’t mean sitting there to sunbathe with a radio and beer and whatever. I mean just sit by the water.
Just experience it.
Somehow cleanses the soul to do it.
I think very few people give themselves the time.
I wish I had done more of this with my children when they were small.
Well, that’s about 7 minutes’ worth of zen, of thinking…very early in the morning…on an Icelandic beach.
