I Don't Want To Know

The Valiha, as might be gathered by anyone with interests beyond the bounds of unionized education, is a Malagasy rhythm instrument. I found it by chance, bought it because I liked the look of it, and play it according to my own ideas without the least knowledge of how such things are done in its home country. Hope you all enjoy it!

Again, I add to a basic (not TOO basic) track of hers with various elaborations of third-world percussion, the jazz organ traditions of my hometown Philly, and somewhat more avant-garde tenor sax explorations. The meaning of our symbolic (and before the end Zildjian cymbal-ic) title is so carefully concealed we can no longer find it ourselves. So just enjoy, it's not like any latter-day Daniel explicating the mystery would be rewarded in decryptocurrency!

Oh, the difference between "the woman of my dreams" and the women of my dreams! But the evanescent ladies have none the less made their tracks in my memory. Or as I put it in a poem some years ago:

Space Weather

There's strange. And then there's weird. And then there's Sun Ra. Imagine, if you can or will, a 27-piece (or thereabouts) atonal anarchic jazz ensemble (the Arkestra) featuring at various times a bassoon played with a trumpet mouthpiece, African dancers, and a fire-eater. Imagine further that this assemblage and its man-of-mystery leader could actually make this stuff accessible and enjoyable! 
That was Sun Ra. Those of us in Philly knew him a bit better than other places, for he lived here (cheaper to drive the band to gigs in NYC than to live there, some things haven't changed) in a big old house in the Germantown section. From what I heard the house was as unorthodox as its resident maestro. If he'd been white nobody would have hesitated to call it a commune.
You don't "cover" an artist like Ra, all you can do is let his interplanetary anarchy react with the portions of your soul akin to it, and be prepared to abandon all preconceptions while recording and mixing the results. Just so have I done. A ton of saxes, several clarinets of various registers, flute stand-ins: piano, organ, a little synth, and the bass: and my dozen-odd African percussion section. If I were doing this live, even with a band of multi-instrumentalists, I'd need a band the size of the Arkestra itself.
Sun Ra passed on in 1993 to wherever self-professed Saturnians go when they depart this plane: but longterm saxman Marshall Allan has kept the Arkestra running. Go here for the latest: sunraarkestra.com  The site contains NO COOKIES! Clearly good developments in more than music are at work here!

I'm singing again! Just a simple (for me) song about 'now' seen through 'then', but perhaps a glossary is in order for today's victims of unionized education:
Theorbo: a type of lute, usually with an extended neck for the bass strings
Joyeuse Garde: Lancelot's castle in France, where he lived for a while with Guinevere
Alan-a-Dale: the minstrel with Robin Hood's Merrie Men
John Dowland: English master lutenist and probably the actual composer of Greensleeves. But if your King (especially a hot-tempered one like Henry VIII) wants to claim it for his own...what'cha gonna do?
Walther von der Vogelweide: one of the most renowned of the medieval German minnesingers. Many of his works (and Dowland's) are still intact.
Dagon: the chief god of the ancient Philistines; as opposed to the modern ones, who tend to worship Football.

Tendering my confession in advance to the writer's besetting sin of oversimplification, I say: synthesizer technique has two main paths. The first -- call it the Moog approach -- sees the instrument as a tool for the creation of new (if you will) organ stops. The other, the Subotnik approach, is concerned with the generation of SOUNDS -- very few if any of which will be at all expressible in the notation which has developed over the past millennium and served us so well. The two approaches are not mutually exclusive, of course: virtually all synthesists draw from both, as their Muse, mood, and machinery may dictate.
As to my title, it goes back to a chance inspiration scrawled on a balloon at the Fillmore in '67. (Cream, Paul Butterfield, and Charlie Musselwhite, "Three bands for three bucks," eat your hearts out, endebted-out-the-whazoo youngsters!) It was a time and place where the most extraordinary things were said -- and more than might have been hoped or feared were even done -- but this wasn't one of them. But like the good man who can't be kept down (or the bad penny that keeps coming back) here it is in our present day. Lacking the euphony and heartstring-tugging of the Twelfth of Never, perhaps, but equally from that realm of the definitionally impossible, even for this age determined in so many ways to make 2+2=5.
To the technical side: all synth parts from my Roland SH-32. Rhythm (and Reality-grounding) comes from my African drums, assisted by real-world cymbals and the Yamaha DTXtreme.

Among other things I was a Painter and Illustrators in the 90's ... I also sold "hip" record for 7 years ... I started playing one ear on a YAMAHA PSR! in 1988 and connects to a MIDI
Generator TG33 sounds a ATARI FALCON ... a TASCAM 4 tracks recorder on audio cassettes! ... I'm just an amateur, improviser, I play to the eye, "geometrically" ... and especially ear ...
I do not know how to read a score ... machines help me back in time and erase the wrong notes ... I self form MAO and CUBASE 3 years ... my pieces are generally unfortunately botched and patched overnight fast with headphones, based on my short time of my fatigue, and sounds that I find ... thank you very much for your curiosity.:)))
