Homegrowns: Volume  1 - March 2016 Mix

One of my favorite Depeche Mode songs - I wanted to do the original version justice while putting my own spin on the song. I hope you enjoy it.

Originally a B-side on the 'Gone Away EP', Eric Shans' track 'Who Will Save Us' was quite well received when it was released, so we felt it needed more attention and a re-release on the label. We're happy to present it once again.

The original mix and title track is a mountainous groovy melodic boomer with harmonized vocals that expand across the sky. Mournful but at the same time uplifting (a staple theme in Eric's productions), it packs a huge bass with crispy tight, drums and has lit up dance floors across the NY scene. The 'When We Fall Remix' (done by Mr Shans himself) takes a bit of a darker turn, but eventually the fog clears and the track picks up where the original left off, this time with a more sub sounding bass line, moodier pads, and added vox. It's quite a journey. And the last remix by NYC producer and DJ, Tristan Dominguez, marries percussive grooves with a tough low end all leading to an angelic breakdown as if the heavens open up and stop time before getting back into motion.

The closer 'On Your Own' is dialed down dreamy deep house with a soulful repeating vocal phrase that hooks you in. It's an emotional end to the EP and its strings that sound like ending credits to a film coast over the drums and bass line, ultimately lifting it up into the clouds.

Who Will Save Us (Tristan Dominguez Remix)

For our 41st release on Colour and Pitch, we are delighted to welcome New York music-maker Weston Butler to the label family with progressive gem, Moonshadows.

Introduced to us by 3Bridge Records director Eric Shans, Weston Butler has spent the last few years building a solid reputation for melodic, subtle DJ sets at venues such as Cielo, Good Room, and ANALOG BKNY. Although Weston Butler is a fairly new name to the production scene, 'Moonshadows' shows impressive maturity both in composition and arrangement; a deep and progressive journey that's simply a joy from start to finish.

Eric Shans adds orchestral touches to 'Moonshadows' with his languid, slow-building rework, adding sweeping strings and subtle synth touches that border on cinematic. Former Sub Club and Nitsa Club resident DJ and now a compelling production talent to boot, Mark Ryal delivers a typically genre-defying, vintage and authentically deep remix of Moonshadows, shimmering with nocturnal beauty.

Fermion is the duo of Eric Shans and Augustine Backer and their second full length album “Hysteresis” is a marked change for the act. Where as “Elegiac” and “We Are Nowhere” explored the more synth-pop and at times industrial side of things, “Hysteresis” drives that with a deep EBM framed engine into higher gear. Big, bold, and dark, it’s indicative of the time period of 2020 to 2021 but it’s not without that glimmer and flicker of hope in that darkness. 

Lead single “Butcher” pounds with nasty bass lines, warped vocals, and shimmering melody (a testament to a modern approach with retro influences), the OMD cover “Messages” takes the original 80s song and flips on its head into a body music dance floor anthem, and songs like “Alarms Will Sound” and “All One” delve into heady synth pop sounds that echo bands like Camouflage and Clan Of Xymox with a steely sheen around the edges.  

The album is a journey of self reflection, a letting go of the past, and cautiously optimistic outlooks of the future - lyrically abstract and at the same time nuanced with anticipation and promise.
