Wind In The Willows Ch.2 Excerpt

Erdfarben, meaning ‘Earthly Colours’ is an exploration of primordial earth forces. It uses percussive sounds as the driving force behind the dark and rhythmic nature of our early, uncivilised planet. The piece was inspired by Greek Mythology, in which the first primordial deities were born from Chaos, a primeval void, and the first thing that existed - born from which were Erebus (Darkness) and Nyx (Night).
			‘..first Chaos came to be, but next.. Earth’ - Hesiod.

The inspiration behind the suite is The lost gardens of Heligan. Located on the south west coast of the UK, it is a series of open spaces and gardens that were abandoned and lost during the first world war. They were rediscovered in the 1990s, and have since then been excavated and opened to the public.

Each movement from this suite for solo cello will represent a different area within the gardens. This movement represents that walled gardens and creates a caged sound world that feels as though the cello is pushing against its own boundaries.

Erica MacLeod (b. 1995) is a British composer based in the San Francisco bay area, where she completed a Master's degree in composition in the studio of Mason Bates at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She previously studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London, under the tutelage of John Ashton Thomas and Stephen Montague, where she gained a Bachelor of Music in Composition, and was the recipient of the Trinity College of Music Trust Silver Medal for Composition in 2016 and 2017. 
Erica is a multiplatform composer, working frequently with dancers and film makers to create a more immersive and inclusive art form.
