Part audio experiment, part sociological examination, part NPR-style storytelling. We take a microphone around campus and ask 100 strangers the same question, then piece together their responses. It's beautiful to experience the transformation from total stranger to intimate question in person, but through internet media I'm hoping it makes people realize how varied and different and brilliant people around here are, regardless if you know them or not. Something about the collegiate existence, or just this confused age, fuels a general uncomfotability and insecurity about friendship. Whether you’re assigned as dorm roommates or trapped in some similar responsibility, the social petri dish of university campuses breed an overall sense of discomfort all too often in the once-fruitful, mutual plains of friendship. In the same sense, college is a time of discovery, a renovation of identity and expression of newfound interests; the perfect opportunity to meet similar minds, blend passions, and generate new friendships based solely on these newfangled senses of self. This week, we spoke to a handful of boy scouts, ages 4 to 10, about friendship… more specifically, what makes someone your best friend? And to make it a bit more interesting, we eventually asked them… “what is love..”
