What:  The 1st patch that I've ever made on the Zebra2 synth 

How:  While I was learning my way around the modular environment of the Zebra2 synth I came up with this ambient droning sound. I'm not sure what I could use it for but I thought it was kind of cool.

Ambient Drone - Zebra

This is a recording that I captured of a church bell at a nearby church chiming at 12 o'clock. I recorded this with my Sony D50 portable recorder. Other than some very minor EQ'ing, no other processing was done to this recording.

Church Bells - 12 O'Clock Chime

This is a short clip that was taken from one of many recordings that I captured at Olympic National Park in WA. This was recorded in Salt Creek Park at around 5AM. You can hear the Crescent Bay in the somewhat distance background.

I recorded this with a pair of Sennheiser MKH 20s in a modified SASS housing that was going into a Sound Devices 722.

Olympic National Park - Dawn Chorus - 5AM

This is a short clip that was taken from one of many recordings that I captured at Olympic National Park in WA. This was recorded in Salt Creek Park during the Dawn Chorus, at around 6:19AM. You can hear the Crescent Bay in the somewhat distance background.

Rialto Beach - Olympic National Park - Binaural

This is a short clip that was taken from one of many recordings that I captured at the Hoh Rainforest (part of the Olympic National Park) in WA. This was recorded at around 8:47AM, shortly after I recorded the Dawn Chorus at the Hoh Rainforest earlier that same morning.

Hoh Rainforest - Olympic National Park - 8:47AM

Yuba Pass - Dawn Chorus

This is a recording of the "Pool 'Fool' of Gold" located in Lassen Volcanic Park. What you hear is a boiling pool of acid sulfate water and pyrite, also known as "fools gold." This is a short clip from one of many recordings that I captured while I was there.

My gear on this recording consisted of 2 Sennheiser MKH 20 microphones (inside of a "modified" SASS housing) and a Sound Devices 744T recorder.

Lassen Volcanic Park - Pool "Fool" of Gold

This is a recording of Big Boiler, the hottest fumarole (steam and volcanic-gas vent) -- within a non-erupting volcano -- in the world. You can hear it spewing gas in the foreground, mostly out of the left side/channel, and you'll also hear some of the boiling pools of sulfate rich water in the middle ground and background on both the left and right sides (since you're surrounded by it when you're there). 

My gear consisted of 2 Sennheiser MKH 20 microphones (inside of a "modified" SASS housing) and a Sound Devices 744T recorder.

Lassen Volcanic Park - "Big Boiler"

I've been doing sound design & editorial on a lot of Sci-Fi projects lately so I'm constantly looking for futuristic sounding technology and machinery to record. Even though this is a super old tape machine (it's an Otari MTR-90, 2", 24 track), the gold colored "tape shields" that you see in the picture (red arrows pointing up at them) sound like robotic movement or some other high-tech type machinery when they're raised and lowered. This is a completely unprocessed recording of the tape shields -- I'm sure they'll come to life even more with some processing though. 

I recorded several variations of the shield going up, and then going down. Several times I also hit the shield button twice before it made it all the way up and/or down so that it would go partially in one direction and then abruptly change directions, which sounds really cool too!

I recorded this with 2 contact mics (red arrows pointing down at them) which let me get a super clean recording. This machine has huge, noisy fans and these mics didn't really pick up that noise up at all. The 2 contact mics were an AKG C411 pp and an Aquarian Audio H2a (with the "contact mic adapter") and they were both recorded using a Sound Devices 744T.

Robotic-Like Movements, High-Tech Machinery - Tape Machine Shield - "Unprocessed"

This is a short clip from one of several recordings that I captured at the Emerald Bay area of South Lake Tahoe, CA. It was my first time really testing out my new Aquarian Audio H2a Hydrophone. I recorded the H2a submerged in the stream you see in the picture with a Sound Devices 744T.

Since I only own one H2a and I wanted a more immersive stereo sound (instead of just mono), I used a trick that Shaun Farley created, and was covered in great detail on Paul Virostek's site here... http://www.creativefieldrecording.com/2015/02/25/how-to-stereoize-mono-sounds-a-trick-for-creating-acoustically-sound-clips/

I also slowed it down to half speed about 20 seconds into the recording, and then sped it back up to full speed at around 48 seconds in. I added comments at these times, so you'll see them displayed at the times when the speed is changing. At the time I recorded this I imagined that it'd sound really cool slowed down, so I'm posting it here slowed down to half-speed (just the middle portion) so that you can hear what I had in mind when I was originally recording it.

Underwater - Hydrophone - Lake Tahoe, CA

I'm a Field Recordist and Sound Designer living in Northern CA. I'm currently working as a Sound Designer, Sound Effects Editor, Foley Recordist & Editor, Re-Recording Mixer, etc. on several projects. GEAR
For field recording I use a pair of Sennheiser MKH 20s that I have mounted inside of a "modified" SASS housing, a pair of Sennheiser MKH 8040s inside the ORTF Rycote blimp, or a mid-side setup with an MHK 8040 and an MKH 30 inside of a Stereo Cyclone. More recently I've also been using an AKG C 411 contact mic, a pair of Barcus Berry 4000 contact mics, and an Aquarian Audio H2a hydrophone, that can also be used as a contact mic. I run all of these into either a Sound Devices 744T or a Sound Devices MixPre-6 recorder.

I use a Sony D100 when I need a smaller and more portable setup. I have the Rycote pistol grip, which helps prevent any handling noise, and the Rycote Windjammer that helps reduce wind noise when I'm recording outdoors.

In the studio I'm running both Pro Tools 10.3.9 and 12.4.0 concurrently to avoid any compatibility issues. When I’m designing sound or mixing I frequently use the Soundtoys bundle, GRM Tools, iZotope's Neutron Advanced, Kilohearts Multipass, Waves Gold and Renaissance Maxx bundles, NI Komplete, and a wide variety of other various plugins. I use iZotope RX Advanced on recordings that need to be cleaned up, although I never de-noise nature recordings. Nature, and outdoor recording in general, is all about finding the right location anyway. 

I'm using (5) Genelec 8030s and a Tannoy Sub in the studio, and occasionally I either use a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pros or Sennheiser HD 600s for additional reference, or if I need to do some work away from the studio.
