Bill Bill Broonzy’s 1941 recording is mainly credited with establishing the popularity of this 8-bar blues. Everybody’s sung it and, though I loved Broonzy’s recording on first hearing it in the 60s, I don’t think I’ve ever sung it til now.

I was particularly pleased with this recording. Paul is doing a remarkable multi-instrumental job. He'd listened to a Joe Cocker version which this arrangement largely comes from. Leiber-Stoller adapted an Italian hit for Ben E King and Shirley Bassey had an international hit with it

Rudy Lewis was singing lead with the Drifters (1963). A quintessential Leiber-Stoller song..."Mrs Brown's been talking about me, to the people way across the street. She said 'I cooked that boy a bucket of stew, but the poor thing just won't eat...'"

I was surprised and pleased that this seems to be getting a few more plays than the other Drifters tracks - this and "If you don't come back" are personal favourites and not that well known. Written by Bert Berns who wrote Twist and Shout, Cry to me etc.
