Erika has always explored the eerier corners of her native Detroit. She captures the empty space and late-night mood of the city in music that is deep and dark. For many years she has been a key behind-the-scenes figure who runs the well-regarded Interdimensional Transmissions label and has hosted plenty of her own parties. Her productions - either solo or with Brendan M. Gillen as Ectomorph - are rooted in techno and electro but explore everything from hard-edged grooves to spaced-out soundscapes. Erika also runs an educational platform for workshops, masterclasses and courses that help bring on the next generation. 

This week's mix draws on all that experience across 75 blistering minutes. It's electro from the off with haunting spaces, booming bass and elastic rhythms setting the scene for what becomes a storied selection. There are gritty and grimy warehouse sounds as well as slippery sci-fi workouts and plenty in between, all threaded together with the control of DJ who knows exactly where she wants to take you.

“Vivid” and “otherworldly” are words sometimes used to try and describe @erikadotnet’s singular sound. Combining a fresh, forward-thinking approach with a strong connection to her roots and the wider scene, Erika has become an influential presence in the years since she was first gifted a TR-606 by BMG and invited to join Ectomorph. 

As a producer, her work is grounded in techno and electro, but often goes much further afield, incorporating rough textures and abstract kaleidoscopic experimentation to great effect.
Alongside long-time collaborators BMG and Amber, she runs the highly-regarded label Interdimensional Transmissions (@ithqdetroit). This platform has allowed her to delve deep on a sonic level through a string of impactful solo and collaborative releases, while also overseeing and contributing to legendary Detroit events Samhain, No Way Back and Return to the Source.

The majesty in Erika’s Patterns of Perception 111 comes as much from its restraint as it does from its vibrancy. Layers of rhythm and percussion swirl and elevate, revealing intricate new patterns at every juncture. And while Erika’s expert pacing and evocative atmospheres offer a sense of low-slung sophistication, a subtle, raw energy builds, bristling just under the surface.

Ende Juli 2023 - auf dem Acker des Nation of Gondwana Festivals - haben wir ab Mitternacht des zweiten Festivaltags den "Bei Birke" Floor übernommen und zu dritt die musikalische Reise in den frühen Morgen gestaltet. Vor uns ging es sehr schnell zu und um die Tanzenden in ihrem Beat weitergrooven zu lassen, stiegen wir hier ein und fuhren das Tempo langsam runter - in ein wunderschönes Morgengrauen. Dort angekommen, breiteten wir euch einen sehr groovigen Klangteppich aus, voller kleiner Details und mit viel Platz zum Verlustiggehen. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass wir - Erika, Mareena und Resom - euch dorthin begleiten konnten. Viel Spass beim Nachhören!  Danke Team "Bei Birke" und überhaupt an die "Nation of Gondwana" für den praktischen Einblick in eine gelebte Utopie.

At the end of July 2023, on the field of the Nation of Gondwana Festival – in the middle of the night of the second day, we were allowed to take over the musical design of the "Bei Birke" floor and start a journey into the morning with those present. Before we took over it was quite fast, so to let the dancers groove on in their beat, we stepped in and slowly brought down the tempo, into a beautiful dawn. Once there, we spread you a very groovy sound carpet, full of small details and with so much space to get lost. We are very happy that we - Erika, Mareena and Resom - could accompany you there. On Thursday the 21st of November 2024, come celebrate the pulsating heritage of Rotterdam’s Reclaim Your City at Saüle. Part of a new event series focussed on styles skirting what is widely embraced as ’techno music’, this first airdrop of the RYC squad promises to be a satisfying moment for all lovers of bold, boundary-pushing electronics. Clad in the austere industrial atmosphere of Berghain’s experimental-oriented subdivision, Saüle, the event gathers voices from distinct geographies and segments of the electronic music scene. From British master and seminal ‘Lost’ nights founder Steve Bicknell, who will blow the winds of dubstep across Saüle’s monster sound system, to Detroit-based deck whiz Erika who will get the heart of the Motown throbbing at the pace of its legendary electro scene, to London jockey and producer Cressida, representing the more alternative confines of the techno-adjacent sonics, from proper UK sound - understand jungle and grime, to techno itself, beware the torrential cascade of roaring machines and sine waves-spoken thunder firing on all cylinders.

At Varden, the fusion of nature and music becomes reality, and Detroit-based artist Erika made it her playground. The Monument Family moved as one, a sea of smiling faces and dancing bodies flowing in sync, like waves in an ocean. Carried by her deep, hypnotic, and atmospheric sounds.

Dancers look on with childlike awe at the projections on the surrounding trees around Varden, painted by light in all of the colors of the rainbow. Smoke is suddenly coming in from the side, taking the shape of fog you can see over water sometimes. Time moved in slow motion, and all that could penetrate the fog was laser beams. It felt like being inside a lightning storm in a cloud. The ultimate synaesthesia vortex unfolding right before our eyes.  

Erika’s music felt alive, creating moments where the boundaries between nature, technology, and human connection blurred. As if the trees Varden was built with helped her to fine-tune the sound. Those who danced that night weren’t just hearing techno, they became one with it under the stars.

This party has been bubbling up for the last few years, but with this set followed by Wata Igarashi & Patrick Russell's closing set, it has gone into a whole new dimension. This was the perfect closing to the weekend, and just what we needed — a fresh meeting of the minds, a super visceral take on the many sides of techno, with each artist surprising the other with their selections. On the dance floor it felt like pure intuition, a powerful perfect melding of art and science.

Erika still finds time to accomplish many things in her waking hours, such as being a member of Ectomorph, co-conspirator of Detroit's Interdimensional Transmissions record label, DJing and making music with her pet machines. Her freeform streaming radio station erika.net was one of the very first iTunes presets, running 24x7 for 17 years from 1999 to 2016. Prior to that, Erika was very involved in WCBN-FM Ann Arbor, as a freeform and jazz DJ, and Program Director.

No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond

A 36+ hour take on No Way Back, with 24 hours of the No Way Back room residents and 12+ hours of the Outer Space room immediately following. An excess of the mindmelting wormhole dance experience followed by many hours of floating in space and beyond. When we considered podcasting some sets, we decided to just release them all, one week at a time, in an order different than their original broadcast, with the concept of bringing further ideas with the continuum to light.

For us the toughest moment of the pandemic shut down was the thought that we could not gather on Memorial Day weekend for our annual rite of No Way Back. We need our community now more than ever, to connect and to feel free, in a world of shifting real and unreal realities, sequestered in isolation, how can we get together? Time feels different now, we have more patience for everything, so we applied that space for exploration to the sets at No Way Back, extending them to 3 hours so the DJs can fully explore their ideas.

The Electrifyin' Mojo would say "if you reach the end of your rope, just tie a knot and don’t let go" and this stream and podcasts are our knot. This was the first ever NWB without a defined space, without the transformational art of Amber Gillen and crew, let's hope we can get together in the future safely. Grab a little bit of netting or a parachute, turn on some red lights, move into another dimension. Please stay safe and live to dance another day.
