The Anjunadeep Edition 11 With Hisham Zahran

RELEASE DATE: 17th August

Erb N Dub was last seen on Technique as part of the musical superhero team-up that goes by the name of Hashtag. Since then, he’s been busy adding brand new chapters to his story. From his live project, Wicked City, through his four deck sets combining D&B with scratches and live drums, to his mammoth undertaking of developing his own dance music studio complex, it’s clear he’s a musician with ambition.

And that ambition is perfectly summed up by the motto Let MeFly, this EP’s title track. Skope shares production duties and smoking vocals are laced by Damien Soul. As Damien’s blue-sky voice soars over reinforced-concrete beats and gritty mids and basses, this brings alive the sound of summer in the city. With both a full-fat Club Mix, and a Radio Mix to choose from, this is an anthem that proves D&B can go hard even when the sun’s out.

Talking of going hard, next we step into Moshpit. Airy pads and chimes are quickly annihilated by uncompromising serrated-blade evolving synth strikes, building to a steel-toed dropkick as the beats and bass hit. This is grimey dancefloor material, for when its time to pull the ravers’ backs off the wall.

Parallax offers a new perspective. Classic-sounding arpeggiated figures dance and intersect, leading to a drop in which pared-back percussion makes way for a head-nodding pizzicato-flavoured bassline. This is catchy, bouncy music with a pedigree that stretches back to eighties electro.

Finally, Erb N Dub gives us Paper Chasing. This one will have a nostalgic feel for those heads who remember raving to dark techiness in the late nineties and early noughties. Classic tropes are reignited for 2014 in an almost beatless eulogy to that style. This is a no-apology, lighters in the air piece for those that know.

With this EP, Erb N Dub has proven once more, as if it needed proving, that he’s a consummate musician rather than simply an assembly-line beatmaker. Every track expertly delivers its own mood and atmosphere, each one different and each one powerful. So, it’s time to join the Erb N Dub journey and see where his ambition can take us now.

Following on from “You Would / Mad Dog”, their impressive debut Anjunadeep release, emerging Italian producers Thomas Schwartz & Fausto Fanizza return to the label with a three track EP, showcasing their masterful melodic touch.

A much sought after track ID from a recent James Grant mix, A-side “Kirk” is a prime example of Thomas and Fausto’s deep, brooding sound. Warm bass is intertwined with stuttering vocal snippets and subtle rising melodies in this gorgeous slow burner.

“This World” sees Schwarz and Fanizza delve deeper still. Pulsating low end builds towards a mesmeric breakdown, full of cascading chimes, atmospheric textures and ethereal vocals. Harking back to the classic Anjunadeep styles of Michael Cassette and Paul Keeley, whilst harnessing the modern label sound, it was an instant favourite at Anjuna HQ.

Showcasing a tougher edge to their repertoire, “Tomahawk” is packed with dark, moody bass notes and pitched down vocal cuts to create a proper peak-time roller. Their trademark melodic touch comes to the fore in another memorable finale.

TECH 108 – Document One – Revolution EP

Document One have already proven their credentials in the world of electronic dance music. Their songwriter's instinct for harmony and melody, melded seamlessly with the powerful beats and bass required by discerning dancefloors mean that they've quickly built an impressive reputation. Between their genre-spanning remix work for names like Rob Zombie, Moby and Professor Green, their rave and radio ubiquity and their global DJing schedule, they've made waves across the scene. And now they've landed on Technique for some D&B business.

First off is “Revolution”. Effervescent natural samples set the scene, but then Document One signal danger with the onset of a militant beat. Synthetic glitches disturb the peace even further, and then things are teched up to breaking point until the drop strikes hard. And when it does, it tells the story of a serene melodic landscape being defaced with digital warpaint. This is marching music, proving that these boys aren't playing at D&B, they're doing it properly.

Then we go sci-fi with “Are We Alone”. And this is no gentle saunter through the solar system, it's the soundtrack to a harsh and brutal alien invasion and subsequent enslavement of the population. Driving bass and mid call and response patterns force ravers to move at sub-point, while stuttering drums add an extra layer of insistence. This is a dark and technical sound, but with all the energy required when the big room needs a hype injection.

And just in case you thought Document One had left their melody at Technique's front door, we have something cut from a different mould with “Kindness for Weakness”, showcasing the jazz-infused voice of Sam Friend.  Aficionado-pleasing drum edits bounce around elegant string and piano samples and subtle synth ornaments. Simultaneously, low end weight provides a counterpoint to Sam's soaring vocals. Altogether, this is a display of expertise from a crew who have mastered their craft.

So this is Document One's warning shot. This is their statement of intent that they have some lethal D&B moves and they're not afraid to use them. Get to know their junglist side and brace yourselves because, for Document One on Technique Recordings, this is only the first assault.
