This is Part 2 of my Mystery of the Motherbeat series of DJ mixes. I’ve wanted to record this mix for a long time as a follow-up to my 2018 mix by the same name. Both are a fusion of styles used to build a psychedelic hypnotic soundscape for deep listening and personal synchronization with the heart of Motherbeat. No big hands in the air moments to speak of here, just deep mixing and some of the most beautiful records in my collection. Went into this closing set a bit more open sonically. Wanted to hit the "anything goes" button being it's a Sunday afternoon on Easter weekend and people have people been partying 40+ hours. "Pablo’s set was the best thing I’ve heard in a while. Didn’t know him before, had no idea what to expect. What we got was a proper tour de force of different genres, tempos, structures and, yes, storytelling (it’s a thing). Slick ghetto house, crazy footwork, UKG, certified bangers (*could have been one, could have been two, could have been three*) - you name it, he served it.

But what really set the set apart (you see what I did there) were the fresh ideas how to put all that shit together – like when he casually mixed an endless loop of that pre-drop swarm-of-bees part  from Joy O’s “flight fm” into his own track. I even had to go and check the players if it was some edit, but nope, mixed right there on the spot. That's how he achieved that mysterious “you get them where you want” state. He created the vibe and eased the crowd into it, which then got super receptive to his experiments as evidenced by all the oohs and aaahs and hurrahs (I might have provided some). That last part also made me realize that Pablo must be the sweetest guy ever – you could see how genuinely thankful and happy he was for all the positive feedback. Top shit, all around."

To immerse yourself in Yu Su’s music is to give way to sensation, like closing your eyes to better feel the warmth of the sun. There’s a purity and lightness that emits from her melodies in which keys, woodwinds and drums melt into effortless rhythms. Organically groovy and powerfully transportive, Yu Su’s productions float between coasts, inspiring moments of reflection with their meditative quality. The Vancouver-based Chinese artist holds a unique perspective and highly personal voice, and has quickly gained recognition within the electronic music scene with releases on labels such as Arcane, Genero, PPU and Wichelrode. In addition to her solo work, Yu Su also produces under the moniker You’re Me alongside partner Scott Gailey, creating more experimental and downtempo takes on house music. As a DJ, Yu Su crafts evocative musical narratives which touch on memories and introspections, providing a small window into her world with every mix.

Recorded with the idea of representing the person she’s become over the past year, Truancy Volume 201 is a powerful reflection on Yu Su’s direct experience with loss and love. Opening with a Liszt piece which stands for her childhood, then moving on to an improvised midi-keyboard duet with her partner, through one of her very first records purchased after seriously getting into music, and ending with a track from a favorite director’s film A Brighter Summer Day, the mix, in Yu Su’s words, “wasn’t really curated by me, but for me.” It’s an honor to share this serene mix and a pleasure to have had some words with the brilliant artist.

The aim of this, apart of creating entertainment and learnings for our isolations, is to support local artists, that are losing their jobs due to this crisis.
