족보 (Jokbo) was originally aired on Radiophrenia, 20 Feb 2022, as part of their Shorts program. Jokbo is a compilation of dream sequences, memories, and voices that are based on my family tree - hailing from the Korean traditional practice of genealogy books. 

Fragments of people from my own family that I’ve never met and from those that are present in my life are recollected through audio notes detailing my dreams of them over the course of the year, and through EVP recordings. The audio sequences were generated randomly during the live performance and broadcasted through HAM radio.

Einstein Patrick Mupalu - 'Einstein Fix’ - is the go-to repair man in Cape Town for mobile phones and laptops. Any device, almost any problem, six days a week, ‘he fix’, and in record time.

Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Einstein has, since 2009, sought asylum in South Africa where he works out of a tiny shop on Cape Town’s affluent Bree Street. From this hole-in-a-wall, he operates like a kind of digital doctor, resuscitating tired batteries, cracked screens, and unresponsive keys.

In this electronic symphony, Einstein’s poignant personal story is told in ‘movements’, alongside the hustle, humour, energy, noise and multiplicity of voices that fill his every day.

From floating in a pond in Vermont to slipping between space and the sky, five audio-makers offer a series of Radio 3's innovative Between the Ears features in miniature inspired by the elements.

Our first edition takes water as its starting point. Erica Heilman is the maker of the independent podcast Rumble Strip, which she produces in her closet in East Calais, Vermont.

A Pond of No Consequence is two old friends, floating on a third-rate roadside pond in northern Vermont, comparing notes on tiny lilypad people and ageing parents and the sweetness of short summers and everyday life.

From floating in a pond in Vermont to slipping between space and the sky, five audio-makers offer a series of Radio 3's innovative Between the Ears features in miniature inspired by the elements.

Where does space begin? In this edition of Between the Ears, we drift skyward to ponder the boundaries found in air, and the thin blue line. Legal treaties, commercial advertisements, conversations between astronauts and interviews recorded with their feet on the ground weave together in 'Tiny Sliver of Blue'.

Mae-Li Evans is an audio artist working across radio, podcast, audio tours and installation.

I managed to use an old bag as a handle bar bag on my bicycle. It was intended to be used for my camera. Then I remembered this bag was used before as a hidden binaural recorder bag with mics left and right in the side pockets. So, I put the mics and the recorder in too. This is the result. A mix of several parts of the tour: departure / climbing up to the Friesenbrücke / walking over the Friesenbrücke / cycling to the Seeschleuse in Papenburg / walking over the Seeschleuse / cycling back home / Arrival.

I’ve noticed a mounting trend in both web content and documentary, whereby makers contextualize their traumatic experiences in terms of traditional narrative arcs, emphasizing suspense, climax, and resolution. Often, this results in the positioning and commodification of ‘story’ as trauma, with no mention of the systems and power structures that enabled it to occur. While I believe that sharing details of trauma is valuable and important, retelling them in broadcast environments or on entertainment platforms is different from recounting them to a loved one or a therapist.

For this piece, I explored the resonance of stories told in this way by assembling segments of confessional YouTube videos so as to emphasize the disconnect between people relaying their trauma with sincerity, while simultaneously using devices of suspense and release to entice listeners to lean in closer.
