Secondhand

The thunder woke me up at 3am
We haven’t had much weather here since I can’t remember when
Our long dry summer was hard on the crops and hard on the town
Thought I’d let you know what’s happened since you’ve been around

Remember that old grocery down on Broadway and Birch?
Burned down last July and took the baptist church
We wondered why God didn’t step in to lend a hand
Guess he was busy at the time, which I don’t understand

Someone took a photo of your face on a billboard and then sent it to me
One more reason you could never stay 
I’d rather get that kind of news second hand anyway

The band finally had a show last Friday night
David Earl was drunk by the second set, of course he started a fight
Made me think I should go solo for a spell
Maybe finish those old songs before the world goes straight to hell

I’ll send you tapes if you get me your address
Not expecting nothing, just to get ‘em off my chest
If you feel inclined you can add some harmony
Maybe pretend things are like they used to be
