House of Doors (2018)

"Departure" (2010) for violin and piano opens with two ascending pitch chains, comprising basic source material. These lines develop and eventually diverge from their original shapes, forming independent textures and sonorities. The upward trajectory is key to the forward progress of the piece.

"Departure" was written for Jessica Mathaes (vln) and Colette Valentine (pno) and premiered at Tenri Cultural Center (NYC) on February 21, 2010. The premiere performance was made possible (in part) with funds from the decentralization program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the
Queens Council on the Arts.

Sections of vastly different energy levels placed within a cohesive formal structure. From wake to sleep; a grinding forward to suspended quiet. The timbral diversity of the ensemble allows for compelling unisons, textural matches, and transfers, with large-scale harmonic clusters combining to form vibrant hues.

Quintet was funded (in part) by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Queens Council on the Arts Community Fund.

"The North Saskatchewan River flows from the Canadian Rockies to Lake Winnipeg, covering Alberta, Saskatchewan and parts of Manitoba. The waters eventually flow into Hudson’s Bay, connecting western Canada to the Atlantic Ocean. Born in Paradise Hill, my earliest years were spent at the Rogers' River Ranch in Fort Pitt, Saskatchewan, where memories of tall, yellow grass, farm roads, steep river hills, and a young family cross my mind from time-to-time." —Erin Rogers (2007)

Program Note:
Two hyper-note-reading-improvisors, adept in finding the freshest-of-fresh sounds on their respective instruments, are challenged to apply quick-changing foot pedals to an over-wrought, noisy texture that transfers shamelessly from wet-to-dry land via helicopter.

It is also worth noting that P. Diddy (known in 1997 as Puff Daddy) produced "Hypnotize" a hit-single by American rapper, The Notorious B.I.G., sampling the beat from Herb Alpert's 1979 hit "Rise" which was written by Andy Armer and Herb's nephew, Randy "Badazz" Alpert. 22 years later, I felt compelled to resample a micro-loop of these hybrid beats and name the piece Hypnotize in honor of the late Christopher George Latore Wallace (aka Biggie Smalls / The Notorious B.I.G.). —Erin Rogers (2019)

Iconic and cringeworthy, the 1983 flick Flashdance follows the path of a young dancer as she pursues her dream. Based in Steeltown aka Pittsburgh, its two major soundtrack hits “Flashdance” (famously sung by Irene Cara) and Michael Sembello’s “Maniac” popularized the use of early model analog synthesizers and the Linn LM-1 drum machine. Both are used here, heavily masked through material combinations while references to familiar soundtrack themes are hidden in plain sight. —Erin Rogers (2018)
