You might think about Metro Area's classic album from 2001 when you hear this, as well as the more accessible side of 1990ies Warp records. Still: there is no real retro sound here. Kapote's music is quite futuristic. It's always has kind of a swing feel, uses chords and melodies that come from the big universe of jazz harmonics and are much more complex that what you are used from usual dance records. Kapote is special. He is the funky kid. Get ready for more Kapote in 2016 on Toy Tonics.

Looky Looky is the new project from Jeffrey Sfire and Ian Clark, both residing in Detroit, Michigan. The pair met in the late 90s when Ian was performing as one half of Le Car with Adam Miller of ADULT. Ian also recorded under the moniker Perspects, and released on Clone, Ersatz Audio and Interdimensional Transmissions. Jeffrey has released a series of singles and remix EPs with Samuel Long as SFIRE on CockTail d'Amore Music and  Ultramajic. 

The duo released their 8-track debut album ‘Part Flamingo’ in 2016. All 8 tracks represent one body of work but are presented as 2 distinct concept EP’s: ‘Part Flamingo’ and ‘Nurse Coven’. They’re loose, fun pastiches of 80’s movie soundtracks with accompanying imagery. For the ‘Flamingo Boots’ EP we chose 4 songs from the album which the pair extended for maxi 12” throbbing dance mixes. Looky Looky describe the project as equal parts light and dark, a contemporary recasting of Italo, Hi-NRG and electro. The songs infuse bright ‘80s sonic textures with a seedy, sweaty thump. The Motor City duo is about a year into the project, but is already known for their hardware-heavy live set after playing the Honcho Summer Campout last year and the 2017 edition of Gays Hate Techno in northern California. 

All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each jacket features a collage by Chicago-based artist Nicole Ginelli of a Nagel-esque face with a mauve/grey color scheme with fuchsia and green accents. Also included is a postcard with notes and a photo of the duo.

Today’s premiere is from the galactic journeyman and cosmic healer E Davd. Davd has been honing his distinctly blissful and euphoric brand of house over the past couple years, most notably with releases on renowned labels Natural Sciences and X Kalay. Stepping up for Blaq Numbers this time around, E Davd has delivered yet another beautiful galactic excursion through the cosmos on his track “Solstice.”

Solstice begins with icy synth arpeggios that shimmer the reflecting winter sunlight. As the meditative synth line progresses, dubby splashes of filtered pads begin to lift the track into orbit. The cozy and contemplative intro gives way to a rollicking bassline that gives the track some thump. The funky bass chugs along in the mix driving the tune, while beautifully crafted synths flutter and glisten along the top end of the mix. It is a track to get lost in. One where you can feel your feet planted and your mind floating. The future is exciting for the young producer, and we look forward to what else is in store from him. Solstice is a strong addition from an ever compelling catalog from Blaq Numbers.
