Receiving his first lesson in dance music, breaking into a club when he was 14 to experience funk and breakbeat firsthand, event organiser turned DJ and Ten Thousande Yen label co-owner Doc Daneeka goes in deep on the rave scene. Piecing together a club focused mix of upfront tunes delivered by both himself and the label, with a couple of exclusives thrown in for good measure, he is the maker of Mondays mix.

Doc Daneeka: Music To... Warm Up Your Week

We're super hyped for this month's guest mix by https://soundcloud.com/edwarp AKA 26 yr-old Brazilian journalist and DJ, Eduardo Pininga.

31 Brazilian tracks spanning rasterinha and funk mixed with axé; "regular funk" / ostentação from São Paulo (not 808 or miami bass samples from Rio); the weirdest and exciting tracks from the Doog kids - kids who can afford their first MPCs and even name themselves "DJ [Something] MPC" and post pictures of themselves hugging it; Bahia/Salvador ghetto bass; Pearls Negras - the closest thing Brazil has to pop-stars right now; and then more funk.

From Eduardo directly:
... some people from northern estates like Bahia, Pernambuco, Pará, Amazonas and etc. go to the southern cities after work and better life conditions, and some that couldn't make it end up in poor living conditions amidst the cities, hence the favelas. I supposed a lot have changed through the years of what you can or cannot call a favela here in Brazil, since some have get rid of drug trafficking or never even had it for a start, but they are just abandoned by a corrupt government. Some kids just grow up listening to their parents music, like I grew up listening to a lot of brega, forró, bossa nova and pagode music. So there's a constant clash of cultures, influences and history very present anywhere you go in Brazil, and that's how this mix between funk and axé was made possible, I guess. There's a lot of hating towards both genres, since they come from people associated to the favelas/poor communities, and because of its constant violent/sexist references some might say it's a "low quality" type of music, but there's a lot more beyond that to discover, good and politically conscient artists/producers.

The artwork features the Mizuno shoe that is like the air jordan to the funk scene right now, as evidenced by t\he track "MC DVD Boladão - Mizuno de Mil (A 1,000 R$ Mizuno)" which describes how the shoe became a "fever". There isn’t anything quite like getting lost in the foggy, twisting works that Alex Koenig makes as Nmesh.

His albums — 2013’s Nu.Wav Hallucinations and 2014’s Dream Sequins — were sprawling, overwhelmingly dense collage pieces made from commercials, samples from the depths of YouTube, and synth textures that ran from silly elevator Muzak to bad trip psychedelia to moments of startling beauty. As you stumbled through those sonic labyrinths you’d encounter others — disembodied voices, drifting through like ghosts. The chatter could shift from mundane to hilarious, from terrifying to emotionally resonant.

Still, his albums are laser-focused compared to the impossibly huge worlds Koenig builds on his mixes. His 260-minute (that’s 4.20 in hours) Welcome To The Warp Zone mix for TinyMixTapes moved through each of its extended thematic sections like some kind of giant, slow-breathing beast. It was an easy pick for our Bandcamp Release Of The Month — but more importantly, it was a clear sign that we had to get this guy to do FACT mix.

So now at just a single second over two hours, we present this double-wide FACT mix from Nmesh. It’s a hell of a ride, with a generous double-dip of LSD and all the peaks and valley that come with that. Here you’ll find the sonic trickery of iconic plunderphonics originator John Oswald holding court with anonymous vaporwave producers while Hype Williams and James Ferraro nestle in with Raymond Scott. It ties all these voices — young, old, dead, legendary, undiscovered, anonymous — together into a legacy of sonic adventuring with Koenig as a welcome host.
