It is a reflection of my diverse musical preferences as each track is a different genre with a different feeling or emotion infused within it. I started working on this one at the very beginning of 2021 & It's the first song I made after nearly a year of being too emotionally and spiritually distraught from social isolation to create anything. I felt so sad, confused, and frustrated during the early stages of the pandemic that I couldn't even listen to music let alone create any. This song was the one that helped get me out of that hole and reignited my passion for creation. Perhaps while you listen you can contemplate things that you've started but gave up on, or things you used to love but have grown distant from. 

No matter how long it has been since you picked up your instrument or your paint brush, let this beat or this message fill you with the motivation you need to revisit that younger version of yourself who still sees the value in creating simply for the joy of creation and as you dip your toes back in, tell yourself: This Time It's Real 💕😇

This song is a gentle meditation on the value of a moment. I've revisited it periodically over the past few years during times of intense anxiety and stress. It's been used as a reminder for myself to stay calm and focus on the good that is perpetually present in my life, even when things start to feel overwhelming. Life is filled with so much joy, but sometimes it feels impossible to properly cherish those moments, those people, and those experiences that bring light into our lives. Here's your reminder to slow down, take a few deep breaths, and count your blessings today 🙏🥰 You have more to be grateful for than you acknowledge each day.

The first track on a release always sets the tone for the rest of the release, and I think Duplicity does a nice job of doing that. If you've ever seen me pick up a guitar, then you've heard the lead chord riff from this song many times. My being is embodied in the sound of this song. This is by far the oldest track on the EP and has been rebuilt a few times completely. I am very happy with how this version turned out.

Duplicity

Casey and I have a funny history together. We both recently graduated from the same college with secondary education English degrees. We met in our capstone English class and became friends through our teacher assisting and student teaching experiences. Eventually we got together to jam for a bit and I discovered he had a gorgeous voice. He jot a few lyrics down and I threw together a simple bass line and this song just fell together beautifully. The housey part at the end is probably my favorite moment of the entire EP.

The idea for this tune had been rattling around in my brain for the past year. I wanted to create a cosmic atmosphere using experimental synth sounds and guitar riffs. After I had the track pretty much complete I started to hear a melody line that I thought could be used for lyrics. I gave my friend Mary a call and had her sing the lead on this and really love how it all turned out!

Here is the title track off my forthcoming EP, "Sleep Without Dreams". A few months ago I taught a poetry unit in my 11th grade English class. We read a poem by William Cullen Bryant titled "Thanatopsis" which was about the inevitability of death. I had my students write their own version of the poem and wanted them to start their poems with a simile: "Death is like ____________". For the beginning of the example poem I wrote "Death is like sleep without dreams". I liked how it sounded and felt like it matched the atmosphere of the title track so that's how the EP got its name. Thank you for listening! <3
