Modular depths

There are three parts to this track. There is the initial generative track that just uses square wave LFOs to trigger a random gate module and then triggers a Plaits and the Square Rample.

The second part is the Digitone arpeggiator just for some fun sounds.

The third is a WIP of my new Fleeting Love jam that I am trying to get working with the Digitone and this modular system.

The fadeout actually happens because I decreased the LFO frequency as much as possible and then it actually kicks in unexpectedly after the track fades out. But, it sounded cool so I left it in.

Modular Shorts | Generative Plaits and Fleeting Love WIP

One VCO challenge. But, I guess a bit of a cheat. It’s a plaits with an LFO (from the Pico VCO set to LFO mode) modulating the model so you get lots of different sounds. Then it’s using a microcosm for effects.

I have a doepfer quad LFO module that does square or triangle waves. I used a square wave LFO to trigger a random gate module which triggers an envelope generator which controls a VCA and a VCF to sculpt the plaits sound a bit.

I spent the morning tweaking the plaits and microcosm small amounts and ended up with quite a nice chill soundscape.

It really begins to develop after the first 10-20 mins after I add more modulation!

I do enjoy recording the whole process.

After being an attendee since 2013 this was an insane opportunity for myself and I really hope I did it justice. A beautiful weekend in the welsh countryside surrounded by the most amazing community. The energy in there was felt by all and I think the recording captures it well. Thanks all for coming through, you all made it one that will be etched in my memory forever!

Welcome to the fourth instalment of the FMB Discord Mixtape. Joining us this time, we welcome Surrealist, a duo from Bristol. They take their sound from a number of well-known underground labels, most notably Livity Sound, Ilian Tape, Voam, Hessle Audio, TraTraTrax and many more. Their production style has varied over the last few years and has now settled on releasing hard hitting UK Techno on their closely partnered label Bloxe. Their most notable release to date was under their previous alias Spice Merchants with a playful multi-BPM track called Little Bit Dub. This track went on to have support from the likes of Two Shell, Bklava, Phasmid, Justin Jay and Jay Carder, who featured it on Radio One. Their mix today pays tribute to that track with a hard-hitting unreleased remix alongside a number of other hard-hitting tracks from artists who have heavily inspired the pair.

Here's how they discovered Bicep:

It’s hard to put a date on when we first discovered Bicep, for me I was at a party in 2017, it was late in the night and someone requested Glue, I hadn't heard it before, but a mate backed it, so it we chucked it on through the aux. It really resonated well with myself and everyone else so we put on Aura straight after. Soon after the Printworks live show came out and it’s fair to say they were a household name after that. I remember seeing them at WHP in 2019 and they dropped Atlas, green and blue lasers flying everywhere, I think it’s fair to say that’s a moment I will never forget.

Welcome to part six of the FMB Discord Mixtape. This month we have James Nicolson stepping up…..

Hi, my name is James Nicolson, a 19 year old sound engineering student and aspiring DJ/producer mainly focussing on techno, occasionally house, trance if you’re lucky, and pretty much everything under the sun for the craic. My journey into DJing started way back in 2010 at 4 years old when my family moved from Wales to The Netherlands where I was exposed to Radio 538. There, they often played the biggest EDM hits of the time which immediately had me hooked on an electronic sound. One of my close friends who lived near me had a big brother with a simple little controller, giving me my first taste of using DJ gear. From here, I found a love for Big Room which led me to hardstyle, which led me to hard techno, which then led me down the rabbit hole of “proper” techno where I feel I’ll stay forever. In my mixes, I pride myself in trying to have fun and set a mood, taking the listener on a journey of sounds and unique atmospheres. Artists such as Dax J and Oscar Mulero have been most influential in the way I mix, but not yet in production which is still a WIP.

My introduction into Bicep came in 2022, on the release of Water, initially I’d only ever heard Glue but my love for euphoric feel good tunes lead me to the recommendation of Water on my release radar after being a large listener of Aphex Twin, Joy Orbison and Mall Grab. Thinking about it, I’ve no idea how I wasn’t neck deep in Bicep sooner…

My first and unfortunately only experience of Bicep live was at Leeds Festival in 2023, while it was unfortunately in the bright daylight, I had an absolute blast and my love for Bicep was well and truly locked in.
