Solid Steel Radio Show 13/9/2013 Part 3 + 4 - DJ Food

Solid Steel (20th September) Strictly Kev gives us a companion to his earlier 'O Is For Orange' mix with another selection based around the Boards of Canada sound called 'T Is For Trapped'. Hitting a more techno vein for the first half, he threads tracks from The Simonsound, Sanctums, Alva Noto and Boards in their Hell Interface guise into the travelogue. There's unreleased material in the form of his extended re-edit of 'Reach For The Dead' and the Peel Session track 'XYZ' as well as lead track by Le Boac, a new project by Posthuman. He then takes it into darker ambient territory with John Carpenter, Alan Howarth and Vangelis before emerging into the sunlight with a whole heap of older Ghost Box material.

Solid Steel Radio Show 20/9/2013 Part 1 + 2 - DJ Food

In Hour 2, Ollie Teeba from The Herbaliser and Soundsci gives us his own take on 'War of the Worlds' for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary. here in his own words;

'When I was 8 or 9 years old I heard Jeff Wayne's musical version of H.G.Well's 'War Of the Worlds' for the first time. It scared the pants off me. For years afterwards I listened to the record over and over. It is certainly one of the things from my childhood that cemented my interest in film scores. Though not a film score per se. Its marriage of rock music with orchestral arrangements to tell a story, had me transfixed. The combination of funky rock with sinister string parts would heavily influence and partially shape the sounds that, years later Jake Wherry and I would be making in The Herbaliser. 

A few years back I was given, as a Christmas gift, the 'Collectors Edition box set of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds'. As well as tons of interesting facts about the creation of the original recordings it had several CD's of alternate takes, remixes etc. On one CD, I excitedly discovered that they had included all of Richard Burton's dialogue parts, without music. Having already created and performed an alternate live DJ score to silent film 'The Lost World' from 1927, this seemed like a great opportunity to do a similar project with one of my favourite childhood stories.

Using records from my own collection of movie soundtracks and other suitable material, I created the original version. This was given to some close friends as a christmas present in 2010. The version you are now hearing is a somewhat revised and extended version, created specifically for the 25 years of Solid Steel. Also, it is the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles' infamous radio play, that when broadcast on Halloween 1938, had many Americans convinced that they were listening to a genuine attack from outer space. This is by no means intended as an improvement to Mr Wayne's recording but a tribute to H.G Wells, Jeff Wayne, Richard Burton, Orson Welles and of course Solid Steel.

This is a mix of soundtracks and cut up samples from 70s/80s horror movies. Sometimes the used samples correspond to the music directly, sometimes they don't (but work as a comment or build some kind of a narrative frame around certain parts of the mix). Music wise there are the obvious classics but also some lesser known tracks and some variations of well known themes. No additional sounds besides the scores, samples and FX were used to create this mix.

This is an amalgam of two mixes I did for Solid Steel at the end of November, 2013. Both were 30 minutes and with a similar downbeat, electronic nature. It's the sort of thing I like to listen to late at night when I'm working on designs or writing. Both appeared on separate shows but were done around the same time so I wanted to present them in one piece like this.

A Little Night Music...

2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's.

Your favourite Coldcut mix was the 'Journeys by DJ Special' from 20th May 2002. The original '70 minutes of Madness' was released in 1995 and often considered "the best DJ mix album of all time" and this mix coincided with it's reissue in 2002. It features extra tracks that didn't appear on the original CD including the Coldcut rework of 'People hold on'

Unsurprisingly, the most popular mix for DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot and DJ Food was their epic version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album from 31st August 2012 made entirely from the original sample sources titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ . Each of them took a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

Finally it was the Hexstatic mix from 28th January 2011 which was your favourite, with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT's remix of Modeselektors 'Art&Cash' leads perfectly into material from Robin Hexstatic's project, plus music from  Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.

Congratulations to Daniel Westlake from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, who was the winner picked at random in the competition and will receive prizes from Novation, AIAIA, Serato and Solid Steel.

Solid Steel Radio Show 7/3/2014 Part 3 + 4 - Adam Elemental

In Hour 2, DJ Food continues with the same decade, but takes proceedings overground and compiles an hour of unofficial remixes, re-edits and versions of classic pop songs from the 80's, remodelled by fans or studio engineers with access to the separate track stems. What emerges is a collection of pop classics seen through a distorted looking glass, culled from the darkest corners of Soundcloud or the hard drives of engineers with access to audio they shouldn't have and time on their hands.

Solid Steel Radio Show 16/5/2014 Part 3 + 4 - DJ Food

Future Shock was a 2hr mix that DJ Food cooked up for an online 'pirate' radio station a couple of friends set up earlier this year called Altar Ego Radio. Billed as 'Music from the Future you remember from your Past', he mixed sci-fi electronica with a retro feel from Jokers of the Scene, Falty DL. The Books, Sculpture, Nico Motte and Jeremy Schmidt. Here's the first hour, exclusively sans the chat of the original broadcast which was hosted like a regular radio show. Much like his recent Magpie Music mix of a few weeks ago he intends to expand on these themes in forthcoming Future Shock mixes focussing on the more electronic side of his current tastes. Solid Steel (13th February) DJ Food - Selected Aphex Works

Unless you've been living under a rock recently you'll have heard the news that Aphex Twin unexpectedly uploaded 155 of his old and unreleased tracks to Soundcloud and made them downloadable for free. Starting from his earliest demos through to known live tracks, later jungle experiments and beyond, this is the motherlode that his fans have always wanted. DJ Food, a long-time Aphex fan, has been through the entire collection with a fine-toothed comb and selected his favourites for the first half of the show this week. The hit rate was high but he's has managed to cram 31 tracks into 85 minutes to mark this unique occasion and peppered the mix with vintage interview clips of Richard James talking about his music.

Solid Steel (27th March) DJ Food returns with a second instalment of his Future Shock series - mixes with a bias towards the purely electronic and largely instrumental end of the spectrum. Ninja Tune acts Machinedrum, Falty DL and Martyn rub transistors with Sinoia Caves, Pye Corner Audio and Silent Servant. Old hands The Human League, Carpenter & Howarth and Psychic TV are present, even Queen get a look in. Sandwiched in the middle is a lengthy excerpt of Tangerine Dream's 'Tru Metamorphic Rocks' in dedication to founder Edgar Froese who passed away recently.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (8th May) This week we welcome Rob Booth for a special Houndstooth label mix and it's a return for Luke Vibert on Solid Steel with a crazy mash-up mix. You can also listen to his archive mixes from 2003 and 2007 on the new Solid Steel website, plus his mix as Wagon Christ from 2001. http://www.solidsteel.net/

In Hour 2 it's Luke Vibert, a man of many monikers including Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews and Kerrier District, under which he recently released an album entitled 4 on Hypercolour. This is the first Kerrier District album in over 10 years since the Rephlex release back in 2004. Luke has been a guest at Solid Steel club nights over the years and this is his 5th mix, his music has been a firm fixture on the show for over 20 years. He's even turned out a version of the Solid Steel intro especially for us and not for the first time either. And so on to his mix for this week, with artist titles such as Ragga Houston, Drexipan and AFX Jackson, you know as always with Luke Vibert, you're in for something unexpected. When asked to sum up his mix, he simply said;
"It's sum of my stupid mash-ups put together!"

Solid Steel in association with Serato (27th November) Prayer steps up in Hour 1 with a mix packed with unreleased tracks. With influences such as Max Richter, Burial and Philip Glass, his music has continued to attract attention since his release on the Cult Music label run by Zomby. His latest EP 'Beneath' is out on Grade 10, the label he runs as part of a collective from Leicester and a track from the EP features in his mix alongside music from Ipman, Sully, Last Japan, Kollaps and some Musique Concrète from East Anglia by Denis Smalley. Prayer had this to say;
"The mix is mainly a showcase of the collective I work within - grade 10 featuring upcoming unreleased material, as well my own music. I’ve also chosen to feature are artists I am a fan of at the moment. I enjoy music that is raw, moving and not overproduced, it has a different energy for me. Through this mix I present a cinematic journey based on this idea."
