Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a 
matter of rosy cheeks, red lips, and supple knees; it is a
matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of
the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamantal predominance of courage
over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over love of ease.
This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old
by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm
wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart
and turns the sprit back to the dust.

Weather sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's
heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing chidlike appetite of
what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center
of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;
so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer,
courage and power from men and from the Infinite so long
are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your sprit is covered with
snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are 
grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are
up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may
die young at eighty.

青春とは、人生のあるひとときではなく、
心のありかたをいう。
ばら色の頬、紅い唇やしなやかな手足ではなく、
強い意志、豊かな想像力、燃える情熱をいう。
青春とは、湧き出でる深い命の泉の清冽さのことをいう。

自分の心の弱さに打ち克つ勇気、
易きに流れる思いをふり捨てる冒険心、それを青春という。
時には二十歳の青年よりも六十の人に青春はある。
年を重ねただけでは人は老いない。
理想をなくしたとき、はじめて老いる。

歳月は肌にしわを刻むが、
情熱をなくしてしまったとき魂は枯れ、みずみずしさを失う。
不安や恐れ、失望、自己不信が気力をなえさせ、精神はちりと化す。

六十であれ十六であれ、人の心は未だ見ぬ物事に惹かれ、
幼い子どものように未知にあこがれ、
生きることへの喜びを持っている。
人は誰でも胸の中に無垢な魂を宿している。
そして、その魂が人々から、神から、美、希望、喜び、勇気、
力を授かる限り、若くあり続ける。

霊感が絶え、精神が皮肉の雪におおわれ、悲嘆の氷に閉ざされるとき、
たとえ二十歳であろうと、人は老いる。
志を高くたもち快活さのうねりの波をかろやかにとらえるならば、
人はみずみずしさのうちに、生の終わりを迎えられるのだ。
