Moscow based Ivan Karasev aka Torn inked his Samurai affiliation in 2017 with his first-ever solo vinyl release on Shiro, a sub-label for highlighting new artists. 

In the 5 years that have passed since this release, the Torn name has progressed into a widescreen sonic project leaving an indelible mark not only on DnB but also reaching into the outer edges of the underground Techno scene. 

As well as his monster debut EP (Internal - SMDE10) on the main Samurai label in 2018, Torn became one of the few artists to garner a release on Homemade Weapons' imprint Weaponry in 2019, a year which also saw him release an EP of Grey Area style Techno on Horo and a collab EP in the same style with Sam KDC and Korse as Vermisst, also on Horo. 

Since these releases, Torn has teamed up with fellow Russian artist Roho for an EP of percussive floor shakers in 2021 on Samurai Music (Fatum - SMDE19) and several self-released projects direct to his growing base of devoted Torn heads. In the background, the last few years Ivan has been diligently refining and experimenting with constructions for his debut LP for the Samurai Music label.

Borderline fulfils the promise of Ivans musical ascendancy in our sub-scene netherworld between DnB and Techno. Gut-punch kicks entwine with dense atmospheric layers, gnawing mid-riffs, and impeccably honed percussive propulsion. The cake is iced meticulously with guest collabs from Samurai Music top tier affiliates Homemade Weapons, Last Life, label head Presha and a tempo switch up to close the LP with the help of dungeon master Sam KDC and close cohort Korse.

Borderline plants a confident, empowered, flag on the electronic music landscape with Torn's name on it.

"In the making of this body of work, I found myself surrendered to the creative flow that occurred in each piece individually. As if the work at a certain point starts to delegate and I have no choice but to serve. Serving in a way of not knowing conceptually what I'm doing.
An organic asymmetric approach was the basis for the whole aesthetic exploration. A dialogue between repetition and irregularity whose sum is leading into a playful yet dark gloomy nature.

In CREATURE I investigated the relationship between technical knowledge or rather the rigid imagination of an idea to the unpredictable fluidness of creation. Every track sort of becomes a CREATURE that deeply wants to be itself and given that, it feels ultimately brutal wanting it to fit in in any way. I am the initial ignition or the person having an idea to start something new but I always end up being a tool, a trigger or a small protagonist in a world that is now something of itself.“ — Chewlie

"I’ve been a fan of Djrum for some time since hearing some of his early mixes and having seen him play out in his effortlessly interesting and bold style many times with the same philosophy applied in his tunes I had always hoped to collab with him. Fresh from a series of artist-led 12"s, Om Unit's Cosmic Bridge label returns with 'Dark Matter', its first compilation since 2017's 'Cosmology Selections'. Collected in a triple vinyl LP / digital formats, the release offers a fresh snapshot of the exciting possibilities and experiments happening at the intersection of hip-hop, jungle and bass music; a hybrid sound the label has pioneered since its first release eight years ago. 

Across 14 tracks, 'Dark Matter' showcases Cosmic Bridge's growing global roster of artists: Moresounds, Danny Scrilla, Proc Fiskal, Margari's Kid, Oliver Yorke, J:Kenzo, TMSV, vromm, alongside new faces Samba and Rude Operator, and perennial favorites Es.tereo, Synkro and Djrum, the latter two in collaboration with label head Om Unit. 

Stylistically the compilation covers a broad range, and gives listeners the space to digest it all with a running time of 75 minutes. There are stripped-down, meditative rollers such as TMSV's flute-led 'Ominous', the bass hypnosis of Danny Scrilla's 'Sacred Waters', and Samba's snappy, booming remix of Om Unit's 'The Lake'. The timeless energy of jungle is channeled in Proc Fiskal's 'Death', a percussive, bouncy number, while Moresounds plays with filters (and your mind) as he refines a less-is-more take of classic themes on 'Watating'. J:Kenzo highlights the music's Jamaican roots on 'Dub For Bashenga'; a tough, pounding cut that goes straight for the chest and which finds its counterpoint in Rude Operator's 'Broken Sky'. 

For those who like more expansive, cinematic approaches there are epic waves of drums, slick editing and euphoria in Es.tereo's 'Floating Point' and Vromm's 'Decentralized', while Oliver Yorke's 'Treasured' and Margari's Kid's 'Challenger' squeeze soul from colder sound palettes and tight breakbeats. 

Om Unit's two collaborations, 'Reflections' with Synkro and 'Ruins' with Djrum, reflect the compilation's ambitions and breadth. The former is a delicate, uplifting roller that sets you up for the dark rumblings, freeform stylings and frenetic rhythms of the latter. The compilation ends with a track that arguably stands tall on its own, Crypticz's 'Chrysalis' feat. Amy Kisnorbo; an 11-minute epic that plays out like a love letter to the magic of breakbeat science, dub technology and human creativity. 

Dark Matter is a finely crafted statement of intent from Cosmic Bridge and Om Unit, shunning easy self-congratulation for a dive into the musical potentials and connections of a sound that is now an established part of the global bass music vocabulary.

As someone who's studied jazz and trained as a jazz drummer, @Paleman knows a thing or two about percussion and the freedom it allows. Ever-creative and forward-thinking, the Manchester producer is returning to his self-titled imprint for the four-tracked 'PLMN004'. The release follows last year's sold-out, one-take improvisations of 'PLMN003' and 'Music for Three Cymbals', a record improvised using (you guessed it) three cymbals, two mics and some mallets. 'PLMN004' is full of dark, shadowy club constructs like 'Wax Wasp', which we're premiering below. Placing drumwork front and centre of the track, Paleman goes for cold and cavernous techno, employing rhythmic switch-ups and dull thuds, sounding like as though someone's hammering on the door. " Selecting tunes for releases on Samurai Music is difficult as there is so many great tunes on offer. The absolute cream of what we get sent makes it to releases on vinyl, so resisting the temptation of digital only releases creates a backlog of high quality tunes. Outliers is a collection of music from the Samurai family of artists that were all in contention for vinyl release, but for one reason or another slipped through the cracks. Most of these are still in heavy rotation in many of our DJ sets, so rather than hogging them, we put together a collection for a Bandcamp only release. No DJ promos have been sent out, and most have never been played by more than a few select Samurai DJ’s and the producer themselves. Outliers shows the depth of talent these producers have with these sitting on their HD’s without a home. We don’t plan on moving into the digital only release field any time soon so maybe we can have this series as a semi regular substitute. "
