ORIGINAL Citation (Oct 2014): Rosetta’s Plasma Consortium (RPC) has uncovered a mysterious ‘song’ that Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is singing into space. The comet seems to be emitting a ‘song’ in the form of oscillations in the magnetic field in the comet’s environment. It is being sung at 40-50 millihertz, far below human hearing, which typically picks up sound between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. To make the music audible to the human ear, the frequencies have been increased in this recording. The heady, atmospheric and emotive-ridden beat-led excursion “Joy Meets Girl” takes the listeners down an insightful, introspective, erratic path, at first lilted by rolling sweet organic piano keys and shuffling rhythm patterns, washed in swelling deep pads, whilst edgy obsessive swirling resonances slowly build a shift into a bubbly, heart skipping interlude, fueled by tightly rattling percussions and heavy warbling bass lines, before glistening harp-like strings break the spell with sparkling comforting flurries, to disconnect back into the early soothing vibes.

In the summer of 2023, Glasgow-based independent electronic imprint Bricolage Records welcomed fellow Glaswegian young producer Sulci (@hellosulci ) into the label family with her debut, "Before The Echo". Eighteen months later she returns with her sophomore effort, "Four Chambers".

The evolution of Sulci is clear on this latest set of tracks. There's a new found maturity and musicality. The album pulls in a plethora of influences and uses them to provide us with some more dancefloor-friendly tracks, whilst keeping that distinct mellow vibe that Sulci has become known for. It's quite the combination. Rippling and rolling funk, melded into cosy ambience amid laid back vocal experiments.

"Four Chambers" starts off on a serene plain before kicking through the gears as we go and a more open minded approach to production has allowed for the vibrant and colourful elements to bloom into full focus as the warm, shifting percussion falls around them. There's also a celestial feel throughout as the ethereal vocals wax and wane among the numerous weaved melodies and pads.

On their last trip to Silberland, Bureau B hurtled along the chrome highways and glass skyways of the kosmische landscape, powered ever onwards in perpetual motorik motion. This time, however, the Hamburg imprint opt for an unhurried itinerary, coasting far beyond the familiar rhythmic terrain to explore crystal caverns and emerald pastures, immersing listeners in the ambient side of this alternative Allemagne. Building on the tape loops, tone poems, and minimalist compositions of the 60's avant-garde, these musicians utilised the sweeping scope of the synthesiser to create expansive meditations on outer-planetary escapism, human connection, and the natural world. This compilation offers a survey of this singular era, blending pioneering voices with lesser-known artists for an immersive sonic experience.



VA - Silberland Vol 3 - The Ambient Side Of Kosmische Musik 1972-1986 [album preview]

The latest @fragilex album brings new meaning to the term “labour of love”. It’s an album that’s been in the works for quite some time. The album is inspired by a long term obsession with fractals and their never ending possibilities.

The original production process on the “Curves and Calculus” album began back in 2018 and in the 7 years since its original inception it has morphed and splintered in many directions to allow all the parts of the puzzle to fall into place.

The finished article is a musical maze, brimming with all manner of corridors and pathways to explore. Pulling in inspirations from every angle of the electronic spectrum and integrating them into a mesmerising journey full of colour, serenity and warmth.

We enter and end the trip in an ambient mood but along the way there’s a nod to the psychedelic aspect that is so often associated with fractals, when we take on a trippier tone as the tracks burst into life through twists of intricate drums and flashes of glowing energy and shifts in motion. Mirroring the boundless nature and expansion of infinity.

All the shapes we experience come lined with effervescent melodies, glitchy sonic backdrops, glassy textures and a constant propulsive motion. Always kinetic, looking for the next move, like the fractal.

“Curves and Calculus” is an audio landscape that is constantly evolving. No real beginning, no real end. A symphony of infinite equations.

Philae’s SESAME-CASSE instrument ‘listened’ to the lander’s MUPUS instrument hammer the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko last November.

** SESAME-CASSE is the Cometary Acoustic Sounding Surface Experiment located in the lander’s feet in the form of three accelerometers, each of which records acceleration in three directions (one vertical and two horizontal)

** MUPUS comprises the Multi-Purpose Sensors for Surface and Subsurface Science – including the MUPUS penetrator that was activated towards the end of Philae’s first science sequence on 14 November 2014

It was recognized early in the preparation of both experiments that the hammering mechanism of MUPUS, which drives a thermal probe into the comet’s surface, would serve as an acoustic source for sounding the subsurface with CASSE. The determination of the propagation velocity of sound would allow scientists to look at possible layering in the comet’s surface/subsurface materials, important for understanding its evolution.

The CASSE instrument listened to the hammering of MUPUS for 2 hours and 15 minutes. Due to memory limitations, CASSE was not able to take continuous recordings, but only recorded a few seconds in one go. 

A total of 15 hammer strokes were recorded; this audio file contains two signals. The time between the two strokes fits to the charge time of the hammer mechanism expected at that time, thus this particular recording proves that CASSE was really recording hammer strokes.

When recorded, the Philae lander and the comet were about 510 million kilometres from Earth.

A total of 15 hammer strokes were recorded. This file contains hammer stroke no. 129 (as determined from the MUPUS housekeeping catalogue), which was recorded on Philae’s +Y foot.

This stroke was executed at the highest energy level of the hammer system. All three channels of the +Y foot are mixed into the sound file, which is presented at real playback speed, in stereo. The signals on the other two feet were, in this case, much weaker and their recordings would mainly add to the background noise.

When recorded, the Philae lander and the comet were about 510 million kilometres from Earth.
