No Moon - Guiding Sun Ray

Extended family functions were torturous. People you hadn't seen in years asking you the ins and outs of your not-so-successful love life and your work trajectory for the next 10 years. The only saving grace was that they didn't come around that often; it was nigh on impossible to get everybody to commit to one place and one time. There were a few ways of weathering these events and she'd perfected them all: smile through gritted teeth before excusing oneself; make up some fabricated stories; or simply ignore them and walk away — these were necessary hostilities.

Brought together by a shared love of groove-driven 90s house music, Melbourne duo Primitive Needs knuckled down in the studio during isolation; the fruits of which led to their debut EP at the beginning of the year for Dance All Day. They follow that up with their first 12" release, this time journeying across the pond to Leipzig's R.A.N.D Muzik. In typical R.A.N.D fashion the four tracks deliver a refined selection of electro, breaks and house with eyes fixed on the dance floor.

Furious Frank returns to Butter Sessions with 'Ahora Sí'. The fully fledged house anthem is the result of a cross-continental collaboration with Barcelona based vocalist and producer Ivy Barkakati.

We're treated to four versions of 'Ahora Sí', all tested and ready for the dance floor and those special moments! Kicking it off, Frank delivers his "Original Acid Mix". A deep, squelchy lurker with nods to late 80's and 90's house music, peaking with thick piano chords and Barkakati's deep Spanish vocals. On the 'Sunrise' mix, the piano and chords become the focus and set the mood for an uplifting journey, bolstered by the raw thump and jack of the drum machines.

The flip side see's Barcelona based "IVAN" emerge with their version. The duo made up of Ivy Barkakati and Phran of Klasse Wrecks fame slow things down a touch, mangle the chords and inject the rhythm with flattering top-drawer percussion. Vancouver native D. Tiffany rounds the EP off with sub-heavy bass drops, hi-tek rhythms, euphoric vocal slithers and more stingin' acidic vibes.

Strictly speaking, this one isn't a premiere, but we've made an exception for Bluff Records' debut release.

Originally released in 2000 as an extremely limited white label promo, Voy-E's 'Day Off' EP is a little known nugget of gold that was produced during Florida's breakbeat boom in the late '90s. Sadly, due to label complications, this gem never went on to receive the full release it deserved. Luckily for us, newly formed London-based label Bluff Records has stepped in to save the day - having spent months tirelessly tracking down the original label owner, who now resides in North Carolina, USA.

Lovingly restored from the original master CD, the EP consists of three beautifully crafted club tracks, each touching on elements of breakbeat, rave and electro. Our pick for the premiere is the title track 'Day Off'.
