Hey Y'all.

After a long hiatus, I've come back with new music, under my new project @EscherBeat. This page will now be the focus of any of my sub projects (more to come in time). I'm still the person known as "23", but no more music will be released directly under this moniker.

This song was made in part with the idea of the video (linked above). My Girlfriend and I shot this pirate shibari footage in Costa Rica, and I set out to use sample material I collected there (the ocean, animal sounds, streams) to add to a song which we wanted to set the video to. I used a traditional Irish Reel to set the pirate vibe (Congress Reel, Followed by Cooley's Reel in the latter half, which you'll get to hear in the final release). I hope you enjoy this song, and the video!

Thursday night at midnight, I had the opportunity to play on one of the biggest and best sound systems I've been on to date! A massive Funktion One, with replica stacks on either side of the booth to provide a full monitoring experience similar to the people out in front.... The booth was shaking and it was such an awesome way to get to experience my own music!
 
Shout outs to Mitch GrymeTyme and Encanti for booking, and a huge thanks to Jeff, who built the system, and was an extremely accommodating host!
 
I had recorded a couple other sets similar to this one, but I decided to go with this one because, save a couple mistakes, this one the smoothest mix. It is all my original music, except for the last 2 tracks!

Escher Beat - Burning Man 2015 - Live @ Sleazy Beaches (Bass Set)

This sunrise set is probably the best set I have ever played to date, and I was truly lucky to get to play my favorite music during such a crucial moment in peoples burns. I've had so many amazing sunrises at Burning Man over the years, it feels good knowing that I have now contributed to a lovely sunrise for many others as well.

This recording starts with a track that was not played at the set, but rather was recorded earlier that week, as an improvised jam out in deep playa, organized and recorded by Mr. Blink (who also plays the hand-pan drum), with my campmate Ganavya singing, and a man named Caleb and myself throat singing. I thought it was a good way to introduce the set and set the tone. Ganavya met Mr. Blink during a greeter shift, and h told her to meet him at the temple round midnight. She brought me, a throat singer, and we went to the temple, almost didn't find them, and they had ANOTHER throat singer join. What are the chances? I apologize if the introductory voice bothers you, a solo version will be available soon.

To set the stage, the set started around 5:45, with a sunrise set to be 6-6:30 depending on when you count sunrise. I entered the dome at Automatic Subconscious, and had to figure out how to turn all the amps, etc, worrying I wouldn't be able to do this set I was looking forward to doing all week. Fortunately I figured it out. My friends and campmates gathered inside the dome, which had a number of pillows along the perimeter. People laid down, some people brought blankets, others cuddled under their coats as they awaited the sun.

Atop the dome, which is one of the tallest on playa, there is a row of hammock netting material. Many people climbed the ladder to get to the top of the dome, where they could see across the entirety of the festival, including an amazing vantage point of the sunset. My girlfriend chilled up there with a number of people who told her this was the best sunrise of their lives. I only wish I could DJ from such a viewpoint!

In this sense, I recommend listening on headphones or a nice stereo setup somehwere comfy where you can just relax and unwind (perhaps from a long night of dancing like everyone there!)

Lastly, this set is dedicated to Mark Last, who, when I landed in California on the way to the burn, I found out had passed away. Mark was a huge motivating force both in my music, and getting me involved in the burner community. Without him I'd likely not have gotten to do this set.

Escher Beat - Sunrise Chillout Set @ Autosub - Burning Man 2015

I was sitting in my studio late one night, trying to decide what I wanted to work on, when I got a loop stuck in my head. "I want to wake up where you are..." like plenty of songs that get stuck in our heads, I didn't know the rest of the song, so it was stuck looping. I couldn't even remember the song.

So I googled it, and my immediate response was, "what the fuck is that doing looping in my head, over a decade later?" In that moment my brain snapped into a mental jam session, where the loop was used over a really sick futuristic club kinda beat. As soon as I heard this, I knew I had to write it down. From that moment, I spent 12+ hours straight on it, developing the general concept, then returning to the studio for more multi hour sessions on it, refining it, playing it at burning man, refining it some more, and then finally releasing it now.

Through this song, you are not only experiencing a song, but you are also experiencing what I felt when the song came to conception: that familiar-but-out-of-reach memory looping in your head, in completely unexpected ways.

There are a lot of ideas about what makes a song or sound "psychedelic", and there are a lot of elements in the track that reflect those traditional ideas, but I think even bigger than that is the ability for a body of work to tap in psychologically with a plan, and bring out feelings inside that are foreign or unfamiliar in normal life.

This track is created entirely with processed samples I recorded on site at a 100 year old 10-story gutted and abandoned hotel. I made it for a short film we made while doing a photoshoot there in collaboration with Jamie Roadkill of Bonedage. 

This isn't necessarily an Escher Beat thing, but I don't have any plans for an encompassing side project at the moment.

Recorded just past midnight in the middle of the Black Rock Desert, this existence of this song is the culmination of a series of chance encounters:

It started 3 years ago, where I ran into @encanti at Burning Man out of sheer luck, and a good ear. The next year, I needed a new camp, and Encanti's Camp Cwality took me in with loving arms. At this camp, I also met Ganavya, a friend of Encanti, who is an amazing Indian singer. We and a few others did a drone performance at the temple, which was one of my highlights of burning man that year.

Fast forward to this year.

Ganavya had decided to do a volunteer greeter shift. During this shift, she met a man named Mr. Blink, who told her of an improvised recording project he had, out in deep playa. He told her to meet behind the temple at midnight.

When I arrived at my camp, Ganavya told me this, and said I should join, as I am a throat singer, and supposedly there would be another throat singer there (a rarity, though perhaps not at Burning Man).

We set out to the temple just before midnight. We biked around the temple once, but didn't see anything obvious. Ganavya had forgotten what Mr. Blink looked like, and was beginning to question her memory of events. We biked around a bit more and stopped, trying to figure out what we should do. Just before we considered leaving, I happened to remember a man while we were biking around who had a large trailer on his bike, and had a feeling that might be him.

We went over, and sure enough, it was them. We waited a bit longer for Caleb, the other thoat singer, and as he arrived, we set out into deep playa  (open desert) to find a spot to record. Eventually we happened upon a nice open area where the creator of the space was present, greeting us as he burned sage on the perimeters.

We sat down, and set up mics for everyone, in a circle. It was Ganavya singing, Caleb throat singing, Mr Blink on a beautiful hand-pan hangdrum, and me also throat singing.

This song is the very first thing that came out of us. It is completely improvised, and the recording reflects the 3D space in which we were arranged. You can check out the original more raw version at @david-blink, but I created this edit for my chillout mix, giving it a more ethereal quality with grand reverbs, swelling octave shifts and other more atmospheric effects.

Trolltron - 05 - Taro Descends From The Heavens On A Blackbird To Throw A Sick Donk Party

This track is about Erika's pal, midnight. She's a dark female owl. I like to think of her as taking after Erika, so I modeled both the song and the story after her. The visual is midnight flying out across the manhattan skyline, listening to music as she glides along and enjoys the scenery :)

Trolltron - 04 - Midnight

This track combines sounds from a few forests and parks we've been to. The guitar riff was something I had been working on, and I played it at a friend of Erika's house, and they mentioned off hand that it sounded elven. So I ran with that because elves are cool and Erika has a lot of elf stuff, including a really cool pole dance video in the woods while dressed as an elf :D 

This song features Erika's oddish as well as my Mameshiba collection :P

Trolltron - 03 - Forest Elves

Bruck is our favorite pal :D We took him with us to Watkins Glen, a beautiful waterfall filled state park, with amazing man made passageways. In this story, Bruck wanders off why Erika is taking pictures, and I'm busy recording environmental sounds. Bruck explores the beautiful scenery, but is caught of guard by some evil spirits. Armed with determination and love, Bruck engages them in combat!

Shortly after I began this project, my girlfriend told me of a dream she had, where I started a cute side project called "Trolltron". Realizing the extreme coincidence, I grabbed my phone and recorded the dream. I made a little chiptune-ey diddy to go in the background so it was a bit more entertaining :)

Trolltron - 01 - Intro (Origin Story)

A little over 1 year ago, I started secretly working on a bootleg remix of one my girlfriends favorite songs since highschool, "Emergency" by In Strict Confidence, released in 2004. The track was to be surprise-revealed to her only as the opener for my first set at Burning Man 2015.

While working on it, I decided to message the band on facebook, on the off chance that they might provide the stems and/or might approve of a public bootleg release for free. With no response, I continued onward, and ended up recreating a number of the synths and using really crude vocal isolation techniques to make the track.

While away from home on my way to Burning Man, and with the track "completed" I finally got a response! They had the stems, but in a very old version of logic, when Macs were still on PowerPC. I showed them what I had made so far, and they liked it enough that if I could find a way to salvage the stems from the old project file, they would make it an official release as bonus content in the future.

And so not only did I get to tell her I remixed her favorite song from high school, but also that the band would be making it as an official remix!

In Strict Confidence - Emergency (Escher Beat Remix)

I finished this song 8 months ago, and at the time I considered it one of the best things I ever wrote. I sent it around to just about everyone I could think of in hopes I could get some help promoting my musical vision to a wider audience. Everywhere I turned I was rejected, with a generally unanimous "this is really cool, but it doesn't belong here". And so I sat on it until I forgot about it. In the interim, I haven't created a meaningful piece of music since. Considering this song a form of curse, I'm hoping its release can free me to continue making newer and even more imaginative music. Given distance from the song I now see where I need to improve. Regardless, I hope you can enjoy this sound journey I've created.
