Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX is the second compilation for Eskimo Recordings compiled and curated by Berlin-based Musician and DJ Luca Venezia, aka Curses, to explore the darker side of club music. Spread across 3CDs and three 2LPs Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX features a mammoth 49 tracks that join the dots between early industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle, EBM legends like Nitzer Ebb and the post-punk experiments of people like Malcolm McLaren and Big Audio Dynamite with some of the most exciting artists around today, such as Boy Harsher, Nuovo Testamento and Years of Denial.

Where the first Next Wave Acid Punx compilation was a personal journey for Luca, a lockdown inspired exploration of his record collection to find the thread that ran through the music that had soundtracked much of his life, DEUX is a celebration of that music let loose on the world, the thrill of music performed live, the smoke and strobe filled clubs you'll hear it in and the artists you'll find on those stages.

"After our enforced break, getting back out there and playing live again really brought home to me so much of what I love about the scene I'm in but also just how important live music has been and is to club culture over the years," Luca explains. "Too often we think of club nights and live gigs as these separate things, but throughout the years it's where the two meet, the friction that can cause, that you'll find the most vibrant scenes."

"There's an energy, an atmosphere that you get with live music, an unpredictability where at any moment something can go wrong or even better right in a way you never expect. I think about a live set we played at a Lebanese festival where our MPC drum machine froze up because of all the dust and sand trapped in the pads. We had to improvise half our set, jamming bass and guitar and pedal FX and vocals, embracing this surreal environment and experience, something that could only happen in the moment."

"With Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX I wanted to celebrate those bands and artists, past and present who, to me, represent that spirit. Both full live bands and makeshift electronic duos alike, the kind of acts that you might have found wedged between DJs back in the day at The Hacienda in the 80s, Trash in the 00s or today at nights like Berlin’s MILK ME, EXBTN in Paris, Night Terrors + SC&P in London, New York City’s Synthicide or Ukraine’s Worn Pop."

"So I've put this compilation together much like my favourite kind of night, going out to see some bands play, hitting up a club where live music and DJs blur together, before the serious business of the after party. On Chapter 1 you'll find bands like Vicious Pink, DAF and Cabaret Voltaire, some of these acts are more obscure than others, some flirted with pop and even the charts but they were all embracing new ways of working in the late 70s and 80s that both set them apart and set the scene for much of what we think of as club music.

"Chapter 2 moves the night on, and this is the sound of the clubs I love to both play and just hang out in these days, clubs where the people involved put a lot more time into digging through the crates than working on their Instagram Reels. These are places where you're as likely to find a band on stage as you are a DJ, where 80's German electro pop by a band like Boytronic seamlessly flows into tracks like Silent Servant’s Non Fiction. Timeless music that can be romantic, dreamlike and ethereal one moment, then veer into dark, industrial sounds the next.“Then finally we get to that part of the night where you probably should go home but if it's too late for good decisions there's still time for good music. Things are a bit wilder here, the drums a bit harder, the synths are more aggressive, tracks like The Hacker's Monopoly, Zanias' Tryptamine Palace or EVA's Industrial Hope that don't let up, don't let you go, just subjugate you to the beat and keep you there till you stumble out blinking into a new day."

A kaleidoscopic sonic riot, Nandakke? is the hotly anticipated debut album from Japanese-Belgian duo Aili. Featuring 10 tracks of surreal electro-pop, joyful electronica, house music and more, Nandakke? is a euphoric album that sees Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters more than fulfil the promise of their acclaimed debut EP. https://soundcloud.com/ailimakesmusic

Recorded over the course of six months in Orson's studio, packed full of vintage synths, Nandakke? captures the spontaneous spirit and creativity of those sessions. Exchanging riffs and rhythms, bouncing sounds and samples off each other, Aili and Orson would let the music take them where it wanted. The result, an album full of wild ideas and bold, playful experimentation.

More than anything an exhilarating feeling of discovery courses through Nandakke?, leaving you never sure where it will go next. One minute a pulsing electro-pop number featuring Aili's dad discussing his takoyaki (battered octopus) recipe, the next an explosive high energy workout song like Up & Down.

Certainly Aili was surprised to find herself singing in her own unique version of Japanese again.

"I thought that I was done with that after our debut EP, but apparently not as I speak even more Japanese on the album!" said Maruyama. "Every time we were in the studio these words would just tumble out. It's a complicated language but I just love to play with it.

“In many ways I'm an outsider, I left Tokyo aged 7, so there's a lot I notice as someone who is not a native speaker and it doesn't always make sense, there’s a lot of mistakes in it. But in a way that sums up the whole philosophy of the album and how Orson and I work together.”

That notion of duality, a sense of belonging but feeling apart, of being between two worlds and inventing your own captures the spirit of Nandakke?, itself a Japanese word that roughly translates to "Well, what was it?".

"It's something you say when you're looking for a word, like you know it but have forgotten how to say it. That's literally how I communicate with my dad the whole time," Maruyama explains. "The main feeling I have when I go to Japan is that I know the language, I can speak it, but part of me still feels like it doesn't have all the vocabulary. There’s a gap there that nandakke has always filled for me. All the lyrics come from that place, that seven-year old trying to speak Japanese."

Whether Aili’s singing about the language she invented with her father over the years to bridge the gap between them (Nandakke?), the idiosyncratic Japanese relationship to fashion (Fashion) or riffing on children’s playground songs (Yubikiri) the result is a remarkable album that defies easy categorisation.

Bursting onto the Belgian scene in 2021 with their acclaimed debut EP, Dansu, its lead track spent 8 consecutive weeks at the #1 spot of Radio 1’s VOX list and saw the band nominated for Studio Brussel’s De Nieuwe Lichting (‘New Generation’) award. Since then Aili have appeared playing live on the Belgian TV show Roomies, been tipped by the likes of Rolling Stone, become regulars on tastemaker stations like KEXP and KCRW in the US and Nova in France, toured across Europe and, just recently, played their first sell out shows in Japan.

Aili - Nandakke? [Eskimo Recordings]

No stranger to Eskimo Recordings Andrew Armstrong now brings his latest project, Daddy Squad, to the Belgian label with Galaxie / Love On The Rocks, two tracks of exquisite modern disco that provide the perfect backdrop for the seductive vocals of celebrated French chanteuse Corine.

“I’d long been a fan of Corine’s soft vocals and disco jams, so I was delighted when she followed me back on Instagram,” Andrew explains. “We finally met in Madrid when Corine was performing there and we quickly cemented the idea of working together. Both these tracks evolved at the same time, like twins, each with their own personality, but linked by a common heritage.”

Kicking off this collaboration then with Galaxie, Corine proves once and for all that French truly is as much the language of disco as it is of love, her staccato vocals punctuating the track’s insistent Linn drums as every word wraps themselves around the snake like acidic bleeps that wriggle and writhe their way throughout the song as they bring us again and again to the edge of ecstasy.

Accompanying Galaxie the pair have also turned their hand to a faithful, if wonderfully pumped up, cover of Lama’s 1983 Italo classic Love On The Rocks. Once again Corine’s breathy vocals find the perfect foil in Andrew’s analogue machines as they deliver a heady mix of oiled up arpeggios, disco beats and chichi melodies that sparkle like a well-polished mirrorball. Massimo Voci is the consummate DJ with over 35 years experience behind the decks, whether performing at clubs around the world or hosting his long running Adventures In A Disco show on Italy’s Radio Capital. You can hear that experience in his sets where he’ll work in everything from afro to house, funk to tropical rhythms, jazz to electronica and you’ll definitely hear it in his productions, precision engineered club tools designed with one goal in mind, getting bodies onto the dancefloor and keeping them there all night long.

Top of the Chops then is Massimo’s latest EP, 4 tracks that nod to the most well worn parts of his record collection whilst still sounding fresh for today. Whether taking inspiration from the infectious energy of 90s house music, the deep synth sounds of the 1980s or the kind of hip shaking percussion and rhythms found on classic 70s disco, Massimo has a knack for pulling these elements together into a coherent whole.

Kicking things off with the EP’s title track, Massimo quickly lays out his stall here. Minimal yet still funky, Top of the Chops combines a bubbling baseline, with frenetic percussion and chopped chants to simple yet undeniably deadly effect. Dropping the tempo ever so slightly French Jam is up next and as you’d expect from the title it’s full of the kind of synths and rubbery bass you’d have looked for on a Falke or Braxe production from the mid 90s, though we’d argue with just a hint of Speed Garage in the mix too.

Música Electrónica is up next and here Massimo really hits his stride. With its nods to the raw house sounds of Lil Louis or Paperclip People, the Italo Disco of his native country, and even a bit of Latin Freestyle for good measure, Musica Electronica is the kind of track every DJ needs in their back pocket, ready to pull out as and when needed.

Rounding things off is Everybody In The Club Crying, and again Massimo takes inspiration from the French Touch sounds. Built around a sample from Libyan singer Ahmed Fakroun 1977 single 'Nisyan', Voci make's the original's funky bass line the foundation for a track that would sit neatly alongside classic tracks by Cassius or Etienne de Crecy, just add your own filters and phasers and watch the club go off.

For her debut EP, ‘Dansu’ Belgian-Japanese artist Aili has joined forces with another of Belgium’s most exciting new acts Transistorcake, the pair working through lockdown to produce a wonderfully fresh sounding 5 track release on Eskimo Recordings. “I met Orson at a party a couple of years ago,” recalls Aili. “I had been making music by myself for a while and wanted to take it more seriously. He was known as this ‘music guy’, so I approached him and we hit it off right away. He has so much studio knowledge I can take my tracks to him and he gets where I want to go with it.”

“We had been batting these tracks back and forth between ourselves whilst locked in our flats trying to get the music right. At one point I started singing over the top of ‘Dansu’ in Japanese, I’m not really sure why but it just came out like that and everything started to click,” Aili explains.

“I left Tokyo for Belgium when I was 7 years old and in many ways my Japanese stayed at that level. When I sing in Japanese it puts me into this naive, almost childlike mindset that allows me to express what I feel right away. You don’t need to understand the words just the feeling that they convey.”

Opening the EP is the title track ‘Dansu’, a hymn to dancing the night away, made more poignant being written and recorded as Brussels’ club sat shut. Over a taut Motorik rhythms Aili’s hushed vocals blending perfectly with lambent washes of synths to create a hypnotic, languorously funky, track with echoes of artists like Can or Stereolab.

Anyone who’s heard Transistorcake’s previous releases will know his love of a 303 and ‘Oki’ sees the pair up the tempo and twist a sinuous acid bass line over Aili’s chopped up vocals and mantra like chant of “Oki ku natara” (“when I grow up”) to create a propulsive club track.

Sticking with the squelchy bass line, ‘Pari Pari’ drops the tempo and ups the funk, Aili’s vocals perfectly blending in with the ethereal synths to create an other-worldly vibe. Curious minds should know the track takes its title from Aili’s dad’s name for tonkatsu, a kind of Japanese schnitzel, that crackle (Japanese - Pari) as you eat them, there you go you’ve learned something new today.

‘Genki’ sees the pair bring back those Motorik rhythms that kicked off the EP this time accompanied by mesmerising synths and another writhing, hypnotic acid melody all punctuated by Aili’s vocals, composed entirely from gairaigo, English ‘loan words’ that have entered the Japanese language.

Closing out the EP ‘Futsu’ has an almost kitsch quality to it, filled with a heady mix of electronic sounds, strange percussion and Aili’s stop-start sing-song vocals. “When I talk to my dad on the phone and ask him how he’s doing, the answer is always: “mama bochi bochi futsu,” explains Aili. “So Futsu’s an ode to the many, many inside jokes between my sister, my father and me.”

Gleefully eclectic and joyful in nature, the ‘Dansu’ EP is a perfect introduction to Aili and her musical world, a playful place where anything goes. With the pair currently working together on a new live show it’s to be hoped it won’t be too long before we can all dance together again.

It's fair to say that Tim Bernhardt, aka Satin Jackets, has kept himself busy the last 18 months. Whilst much of the music industry's been locked down, the nu-disco star's released a series of acclaimed singles and forged several new connections. One of which, his partnership with up & coming UK vocalist Tailor is already paying dividends. 2013 has been a huge year for Satin Jackets, one of Germany’s most notable indie dance protagonists.

Satin Jackets and Sydney based singer KLP have joined forces on this one. They met in Berlin and performed together at Oval Space in London, this first collaboration was their logical next step. ‘For Days’ has that lush production that has characterized Satin Jackets for quite some time now. Exquisite harmonies combined with the dreamy vocals from KLP define this cutting edge indie dance gem that has masterful melodies and stripped-back ambience throughout. The release is topped off by the laid back slo-mo vintage burner ‘Night Keys’ to put you into that late-night cruising mood.

Following the very well-received ‘You Make Me Feel Good’ and ‘Olivia’ (taken from The Pink Collection), ‘For Days’ marks the third Satin Jackets release on Eskimo this year.

Combining fluid violins, hang drums and his typical bass rumble it’s a track from someone so adept at production they have the confidence and freedom to play around with styles in the 7-minute runtime.

We discovered Gespleu through Satin Jackets. It is the alter-ego production guise of Anton Lanski who started producing at the turn of the millennium. Lanski's affair with sound "through heart, hands and computer tools" have led to a raft of successful releases and remixes, and this is no exception.

Lust For Wrong is the debut release for Vinny Villbass on Eskimo Recordings. This haunting house cut features the vocal funk from the renowned Ost (from diynamic duo Ost&Kjex) and comes with a Finnebassen remix.

For 15 years, Vinny Villbass has been one of the main influences on the Norwegian club scene, with a musical focus on percussive and disco-oriented house music. In addition to having a master degree in acoustics, Håkon "Villbass" Vinnogg has been recommending music on Norwegian national radio and functioned as one of the hosts of the legendary Sunkissed nights in Oslo. He has been Diskjokke´s dj-partner since the end of the 90’s and has played guitar and synth in the DiskjokkeBand. He is also one of two curators behind the much hyped contemporary stage project Pantha Du Prince & The Bell Laboratory. Vinny Villbass is currently running the Norwegian web-portal OsloClubCast where he is building ties between the clubs, djs, and producers of Oslo.

Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX is the second compilation for Eskimo Recordings compiled and curated by Berlin-based Musician and DJ Luca Venezia, aka Curses, to explore the darker side of club music. Spread across 3CDs and three 2LPs Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX features a mammoth 49 tracks that join the dots between early industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle, EBM legends like Nitzer Ebb and the post-punk experiments of people like Malcolm McLaren and Big Audio Dynamite with some of the most exciting artists around today, such as Boy Harsher, Nuovo Testamento and Years of Denial.

Cabaret Voltaire - Blue Heat (12" Mix) [Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX - Eskimo Recordings]

Following on from previous releases, Make Me Rich and their cover of Fergie's Glamorous, Japanese-Belgian duo AILI continue to ignore their bank balance and explore the finer things in life with new single Fashion. A somewhat tongue-in-cheek tribute to the strange world of haute couture, Fashion sees Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters deliver another playful electro-pop number, this time adding traditional Japanese string instrument, the koto, to their banks of synths and Aili's deadpan vocals. https://soundcloud.com/ailimakesmusic 

Built around an unhurried groove and hypnotic Kosmiche bass line, camera-flash like bursts of melody all come together to provide the perfect backdrop for Maruyama to explore the Japanese relationship to fashion. Something that anyone who has taken a walk around Tokyo's famed Harajuku district, or developed a taste for raw selvedge denim produced in the Okayama prefecture, will know they can take remarkably seriously. 

As Maruyama sings, this time entirely in Japanese, that's even reflected in the language used to describe how you wear different items of clothing. 'Japanese uses different verbs that mean 'to wear' depending on what you're talking about,' she says. 'For example, unlike Dutch, Japanese has the verb "kaburu" for items you wear on your head as opposed to "kiru" for anything you cover your upper body with.'

Accompanying the single the band produced a video that captures the joyful and surreal nature of both the band and the fashion world itself. Serving up their best catwalk looks, a paint splattered Maruyama and Wouters take turns modelling everything from shirts made from salad leaves, to lemon glasses, grape earrings, green pea necklaces and more. 'Fashion may be taken seriously but that doesn't mean it needs to be serious,' Maruyama says. 'The video is a treat for the senses, one that hopefully will make you smile and your mouth water at the same time.'

So there you have it, if you start to see kids on Brussels' Rue Dansaert dressed in trousers made from witloof in the coming months at least you'll now know who to blame.

Bursting onto the scene in 2021 with their acclaimed debut EP, Dansu, Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters have continually defied expectations as they playfully blend leftfield pop with underground electronic sounds. Originally released back in 1987, Curses' remix brings the track right up date, pushing the tempo and toughening up the drums whilst stripping it back down to focus on the portentous choral synth pads and teasing us with its ecstatic vocal samples before the effervescent Italo melody brings it all together. A perfect synthesis of past and present, much like the compilation it's taken from.

Belgian-Japanese duo Aili return this November with the irresistible electro-pop of Babychan, the second single taken from their forthcoming debut album. Where previous releases have seen the band sing about fashion, dancing, money and pillow fights, Babychan sees Aili Maruyama & Orson Wouters finally tackle one of pop's biggest subjects, love. As we've come to expect from them though, Babychan is not your usual love song.
"This is our first love song (and the only love song on the album)," explains Maruyama. "It’s about the first phase of a relationship when you’re completely absorbed by LOVE. We directly translated Dutch idioms into Japanese sentences. We don’t know if those sayings are correct, but we hope people will understand us. This might be confusing, but that’s what love is all about."
Perfectly capturing that heady overwhelming experience, you'll find no heartfelt pianos, acoustic guitar or plaintive yearning here rather Babychan is another joyous explosion of sound, from looping acidic bleeps and lazer sharp synth to rattling percussion, all topped off by Aili's distinctive vocals.
Making their debut in 2021 with the critically acclaimed Dansu EP, Maruyama and Wouters have quickly established themselves as one of Belgium’s most exciting new acts. Signed to Eskimo Recordings the band have spent much of the past six months in the studio working on their hotly anticipated debut album, due for release in early 2024.

Lead track ‘Nandakke?’ is sung in the unique version of Japanese that singer Aili Maruyama and her father created to stay connected when she left Tokyo for Europe aged seven. The song goes out to all people with families living in different countries who are finding a way to stay in touch even when language is a barrier. 

“‘Nandakke?’ Is a Japanese word that roughly translates to "Well, what was it?”, often used when you are looking for a specific word," says Aili. "The song is about the language I speak with my dad, a mix of French and Japanese."

“I’d long been a fan of Corine’s soft vocals and disco jams, so I was delighted when she followed me back on Instagram,” Andrew explains. “We finally met in Madrid when Corine was performing there and we quickly cemented the idea of working together."

The pair have turned their hand to a faithful, if wonderfully pumped up, cover of Lama’s 1983 Italo classic Love On The Rocks. Corine’s breathy vocals find the perfect foil in Andrew’s analogue machines as they deliver a heady mix of oiled up arpeggios, disco beats and chichi melodies that sparkle like a well-polished mirrorball. NTEIBINT feat. Stella - The Owner (Anoraak Remix)

Having delivered one of 2024's best debut albums, Nandakke?, Belgium-Japanese duo Aili have spent much of the past 12 months bringing their kaleidoscopic collision of electro-pop, electronica, house music and more to clubs and festivals throughout Europe, Mexico and Japan. Not wanting to leave us hanging though Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters are back with two new club ready tracks, Damewadame and Shindara, the vibe of which will be very familiar to anyone who's caught the band's live show and experienced the moment their neon hued electronic pop gives way to a calorie burning blast of beats, bass and strobe lights.  

Whilst these new tracks have already made themselves very much at home in Aili's lives sets, their origins lie in the soundtrack to an upcoming Belgium TV series, Drift, that the band were invited to score. The series follows a group of 20-something Brussels friends, navigating the shifting sands of sex and love in the 21st century, and Aili's music provides a perfect backdrop as they explore the increasingly relevant issues such non-monogamous relationships, trust and consent that young people are dealing with today.  

The first track here, Damewadame, was originally created for one of Drift's party scenes. When it came to turning the original 30 second or so snippet into a complete song Aili wanted it to reflect not just some of the themes of the show but the band's own concerns with what's happening in clubs in Belgium, and indeed around the world, today. The result is one of Aili's harder tracks, that veers more towards industrial edged techno and where rattling percussion and overdriven bass underscore the urgency of Maruyama's vocals.  

“Here I’m literally singing 'Yes is yes. No is no,' as the song is about consent in clubs," she explains, a hot button topic in Belgium in the wake of several high-profile incidents of spiking and sexual assaults. "It's an important subject, especially in clubbing environments where people take drugs, or they're intoxicated, and it can become a blur and people use that as an excuse. There's been a few cases in the news recently and it's good it's finally being taken seriously as all my female friends have a bad story, and some of my male friends too. So this is just a simple but clear message, a yes is a yes, a no is a no. Even if you're intoxicated you know what that means.”  

With many of the scenes set in Brussels' vibrant clubland Aili needed to provide an appropriately up-tempo accompaniment and for inspiration looked back to a track written for their very first live show when they needed something explosive to end the gig with. Never properly recorded until now, that intense end of set workout has been vastly overhauled. Now retitled Shindara, the track eases us in with a soaring, almost meditative intro, that sees Maruyama's vocals, glitch, echo and misfire over a bed of numinous ambient textures, before the drums and acidic synths kick in and drag us back to the dark of the dancefloor. Fitting for a song that, as Maruyama explains, ended up entering some fairly philosophical pastures.  

"The lyrics [in Japanese] are essentially about 'when I die, where do I go?' And I just don't know because I don't really have a religion to fall back on, but still it's something I often think about. So Shindara has this very long intro which is very light and uplifting, and you feel it's taking you somewhere peaceful but then it was fun to play with that idea, to have this big existential question and then turn it into a huge club track. It's a fun puzzle."

On Galaxie, Corine proves once and for all that French truly is as much the language of disco as it is of love, her staccato vocals punctuating the track’s insistent Linn drums as every word wraps themselves around the snake like acidic bleeps that wriggle and writhe their way throughout the song as they bring us again and again to the edge of ecstasy.

DHS Premiere: Daddy Squad feat. Corine - Galaxie (Extended Remix)

Whilst much of the attention around Kate Stein & Lord Fascinator's Primary EP has focused on the raucous cowboy disco of Horse House and Asteroid's festival ready joyful melodies, it's time for the EP's closer, Le Petit Martien to get its moment in the strobe light courtesy of a new remix from Mehmet Aslan and with its intergalactic western vibe and Morricone'esque guitar twangs Le Petit Martien is a perfect track for the eclectic Swiss-Turkish producer to work with.

Having made his name with imaginative fusions of electronic, ambient, experimental and folk music, all of that is again on display here as Aslan pairs the original's western aesthetics with a disorientating beat and a writhing acidic melody that snakes its way through the song. Hypnotic and disarming effect in equal measure, it's the ideal track to reach for when the club is ready to get a little a little deeper and a lot weirder.

Massimo Voci is the consummate DJ with over 35 years experience behind the decks, whether performing at clubs around the world or hosting his long running Adventures In A Disco show on Italy’s Radio Capital. You can hear that experience in his sets where he’ll work in everything from afro to house, funk to tropical rhythms, jazz to electronica and you’ll definitely hear it in his productions, precision engineered club tools designed with one goal in mind, getting bodies onto the dancefloor and keeping them there all night long.

Top of the Chops then is Massimo’s latest EP, 4 tracks that nod to the most well worn parts of his record collection whilst still sounding fresh for today. Whether taking inspiration from the infectious energy of 90s house music, the deep synth sounds of the 1980s or the kind of hip shaking percussion and rhythms found on classic 70s disco, Massimo has a knack for pulling these elements together into a coherent whole.

Kicking things off with the EP’s title track, Massimo quickly lays out his stall here. Minimal yet still funky, Top of the Chops combines a bubbling baseline, with frenetic percussion and chopped chants to simple yet undeniably deadly effect. Dropping the tempo ever so slightly French Jam is up next and as you’d expect from the title it’s full of the kind of synths and rubbery bass you’d have looked for on a Falke or Braxe production from the mid 90s, though we’d argue with just a hint of Speed Garage in the mix too.

Música Electrónica is up next and here Massimo really hits his stride. With its nods to the raw house sounds of Lil Louis or Paperclip People, the Italo Disco of his native country, and even a bit of Latin Freestyle for good measure, Musica Electronica is the kind of track every DJ needs in their back pocket, ready to pull out as and when needed.

Rounding things off is Everybody In The Club Crying, and again Massimo takes inspiration from the French Touch sounds. Built around a sample from Libyan singer Ahmed Fakroun 1977 single 'Nisyan', Voci make's the original's funky bass line the foundation for a track that would sit neatly alongside classic tracks by Cassius or Etienne de Crecy, just add your own filters and phasers and watch the club go off.

Deep in the depths of Norway (Bergen to be precise), https://soundcloud.com/atella and O. Martin have been brewing up ‘Mechanical Sparrow’ for Eskimo recordings, with club remix and rework from Man Power.

The original gives a nod to their expansive environment and the sounds of Air or Royksopp, sweeping melodies, majestic vocals, and luscious French “Phoenix” guitar. The Atella Club Mix is friendlier for those seeking out the ebbs of the night, while Man Power’s remix reveals the bare bones of ‘Mechanical Sparrow’, it’s delicate wings in pensive flight contemplating a divine dreamstate, in the style of Mount Kimbie and Bonobo.  

Atella are Magnus & Johannes who hilariously stumbled upon each other at a piggy back race. They have remixed fellow Norwegian Lindstrom and indie-electronica outfit Lemaitre. They debuted on Eskimo with ‘The Monster’ back in 2014, a track that was recently featured in ‘Scream’, the TV series spin off from the film trilogy. Back then they were remixed by UK electronic darlings, Stubborn Heart, while Atella’s latest release features a remix from another UK aficionado, Man Power, the elusive producer for his work on Correspondent and John Talabot’s Hivern Discs.

The track features O. Martin, a close musical ally of Aurora (infamous for the music on the current John Lewis Christmas ad) which gave life to this collaboration, as Atella explains “When Atella and O. Martin met in the studio in Bergen, Norway, there was chemistry right away. They just started jamming, recorded several acoustic instruments and then brought in the organic-electronic sound. O. Martin composed text and melody and Mechanical Sparrow was born.”

Cavego - Vår I Øyer

Having seen one of their biggest acts, Aeroplane, make a triumphant return to the label with ridiculously summery single 'Body', Eskimo Recordings have now tapped up Italian DJ and producer Andrea Tirone, aka Mind Enterprises, to remix the track. 

"The first time I listened to the original I felt like I knew the song already," explains Andrea. "So I had lots of fun remixing it." Where the original leaned hard on Balearic disco and early house vibes, Mind Enterprises' remix take us deep into Italo territory and if it was fun to produce in the studio it's even better heard on the dancefloor. 

Underpinned by an outrageously funky bass line and a melody that's sure to stick in your head for months to come, Yves Paquet's vocals once again take flight, the resulting track the sonic equivalent of the best cocktail on a beach you've ever had, plastic flamingo and umbrella included, of course.
