It's been months since I posted a set, so to change that I figured I'd just record an improv session while I was playing for some friends this weekend and see if it would be postworthy afterwards.

I'm happy with the set and its flow, so here it is. It turned into a tribal-ish set, because apparently I was in a lots-of-drums mood. 

Also: some might recognize some tracks, because I browsed through music I had collected for gigs (OOST, Echo Label Night, Spacebar Rave Night, Bauhauz, KopjeK Kingsday). Hope you like the new view on it!

Recording of my set at F_AKE JUNE_10TH at Drafbaan Groningen.

The organization gave me this challenging timeslot in between Joe Sane and Moxes during sunrise - I had to bring down the BPM and intensity while preserving the energy on the dance floor. For this I played with the flow, different rhythms and tactical use of more melodic tracks.

Recording of the second Auditory Oasis show I did at Relate Radio last week.

A 1h40min groovy uptempo set, starting on the housey side and gradually working towards techno. No harsh or intense sounds used, to preserve that soothing yet slightly uplifting effect. Hope you like and let me know what you think!

Here's the recording of my set at OOST (Groningen, NL) on 11/3/23! Opened the main room before DJ Leoni and Selin. 

Mostly light and groovy stuff, varying from minimal housey sounds to garage and dub techno. Happy with how the build-up and flow in sounds in this one turned out.

it's a [groovy] techno mix

Retake of my set at OOST last Saturday, since the recording (again) unfortunately did not work out. I tried to have it as similar to the set as possible by keeping to the tracklist and the mixing ways that I used then, and I think I came pretty close! Actually had a lot of fun reliving the night through mixing this one - the dance floor energy was the best.

I closed the night 4-6 after Manni Dee with an uptempo driving groovy rave set with an experimental touch.

Auditory Oasis #5 w/ Lucius, Lucius B2B Deets – Relate Radio | January 2024

This is a good moment for some background info regarding my DJ sets and this one in particular.

I treat each set as its own special moment in time and space and sets rarely sound the same. The range of my style is also rather broad with various tempos and colours on the palette. For me, what a set becomes very much depends on the setting and mood, though it's always a sonic journey ought to speak to both body (complex/layered rhythms) and mind (captivating, trance-inducing and emotive aspects), aiming for the greatest impact on the crowd (and myself), mixed with typical components like thick&wobbly basslines and vocal cuts.

This set for Paradigm x Zeezout became a very immersive one, with a lot of emotions in it. Tension and release, light and heavy, dark and luminous, experimental and easy-grooving to warm up the room properly during this beautiful indoor day-festival.

3hrs (14:00-17:00) of constantly 2 and 3 decks in the mix. Together with the ambience of the Basement that day I'm very content with how it turned out. And the mix has some imperfections, but I guess that's inevitable when experimenting and taking heaps of creative risks. Hope you enjoy(ed) it like I did and let me know about your experience- always looking to hear about those.

Also: this was my very first time playing in the amazing Zeefgebouw, where I've spent many Paradigm party-hours over the past years and which holds a special place in my heart, and it did not disappoint. Very grateful to have been given the honour to fill the space with music before legends DJ Europarking, Mor Elian and Helena Hauff.

Deets at Paradigm x Zeezout 2024 (opening)

For the sixth episode of Auditory Oasis Pekkel and Deets invited the listener to explore the richness and power of minimalistic and deep soundscapes, paving the way through various electronic genres that set the right atmosphere to appease the mind as well as ground the body. The first hour was taken care of by Pekkel, the second Pekkel and Deets went B2B.

A lot of Pekkel's inspiration comes from witnessing opening hours, when minds are still sharp and not exceedingly craving climaxes or highs. Rather, something is created that has unison and feels immersive; something you can step into and get lost in. While being characterized by ever-changing rhythms, bleeps and percussions, Pekkel's sets are built by meticulously picking and blending tracks from a wide range of genres.

Here's the recording of my openingset before Danielle and Christian Thomas at OOST main room 1/6/2024. Picture a cosy, smokey club setting with a soundsystem on mode "sturdy" and bass that goes brrr from the start of the club night 😮‍💨. The first part is rather mellow with atmospheric and downtempo soundscapes to welcome the crowd warmly, after which the set gradually transforms into more uplifting and driving stuff, while matching Danielle and Christian Thomas their eclectic bassy techno-y housey sounds for a cohesive experience throughout the night.

Set the Mood with Deets!

Set the Mood is a concept-based mix-series focussing on opening-sets.

Deets is known for providing an easy-grooving, ego-dissolving yet grounding experience since she began DJ-ing as a coping mechanism during the lockdowns. She navigates genres like techno, bass, and house with finesse, always adjusting to the setting and mood to leave a lasting impact on the crowd.

Working like a 'painter of time and space' aiming to move both the human psyche and the body, she blends contrasting elements into one musical journey with her signature explosive yet polished style of layered mixing as her brush.

For Deets, a perfect opening set feels like an embrace upon entering the room, slowly transforming into an energizer. It offers a hint of what's to come, creating excitement for the rest of the event while allowing the audience to enjoy the current moment. If the set is a coherent yet surprising and easily flowing journey that fits well into the bigger picture of the night, she believes it can captivate the audience from the beginning and keep them dancing until their legs feel like cooked spaghetti. Her DJ-ing approach for opening sets is influenced by her preferences as a raver, reading the room, keeping the rest of the program in mind, and increasing the energy when the crowd is ready.

Listeners can expect to cruise through rich and refined soundscapes with fat basslines, infectious percussions and synths, plenty of uplifting vocal cuts, and a sprinkle of funk to liven up the ride: final destination undisclosed.

Here's the recording of my closing set at the Valhalla stage during Paradigm Festival 2024.
The setting as well as the audience's and my mood asked for an uplifting (polyrhythmic and bass-heavy, as usual) housey techno set with nods towards bass/UK funky/breakbeat realms.

The quality of the recording could've been better, but I wanted to publish it anyway, since it was so fun.

"I've been fascinated by humanity and the human psyche for as long as I can remember - our consciousness is one of the topics that we have not fully unravelled yet and, thus, keeps triggering my interest, for instance. Out of the fascination for the psyche combined with always having been drawn to music and needing creative and artistic outlets, wanting to leave a positive impact on the collective, and my love for rave culture&music and the community, came my passion for DJ-ing. 

Over time I've been growing more into this psychological approach of DJ-ing, focusing on a mind-body connection through escapistic yet grounding and empowering electronic music experiences that calm the mind by triggering it, fostering expansion in various ways: create headspace as well as turn up the groove for bodily awareness&energy and have a musical exploration.

To practicalize my vision regarding the psychological and (therefore) physical benefits of electronic music and healing powers of DJ sets, as well as to connect likeminded souls and further contribute to the scene, I started @audoa.gro (Instagram). There are lots of ideas and plans, for now keeping it to a radioshow 'Auditory Oasis' at Relate Radio: having DJ's play sets that soothe the busy minds in roaring times by taking them away from mundane struggles with easy-flowing vibrational voyages disregarding boundaries set by (electronic) music (sub)genres.

Got invited by Andrew to play a set for the lovely TOZO label radioshow at Operator. Went for refined yet powerful sonics from various electronic music (sub)genres, mixing a bunch of current (atmospheric & danceable) favourites into one flow, switching between breaks/bass and rhythmic 4/4 beats. The set starts rather mellow and gradually grows in energy, with very little adjustments in tempo. A nice one to get into partymode with, for instance.

It is a 4decks genrefluid (though techno-dominated) rolling and driving set painted with various colours, dark as well as vibrant ones - dark to escape into away from daily struggles and to release inner troubling sensations, and vibrance to embrace and celebrate our precious time here. With lots of grooviness and low frequencies, as usual.

Personally, I've been in need of escapistic music as well as grounding and light-heartedness - dealing with the loss of a dear one amidst Christmas season is a weird and challenging experience. It has me feeling sad and grateful at once, constantly, awake or asleep. Not enjoying feels like doing my mum's spirit wrong, while embracing vividness is counter-intuitive and heavy on the internal energy levels. 

This mix was made to put my mind at ease and create (bodily and mental) power, and hopefully it can do so for others as well. 

Let me know if it did or not. And remember that talking with people about what's going on is important, especially in challenging times. It's okay not to be okay, also during Christmas season.

During this dance- and trance-inducing OOST club night with Audrey Danza and RDVSK behind the decks after me I welcomed the audience with floaty and eerie techno, bass music & IDM, and gradually built up the energy towards driving and punchy floor-fillers with touches of trance, acid, house.

Apart from a bit of not-clean mixing further in the set I'm very happy with this one. The atmosphere that night was great, with the room packed early on with people eager to dance and to get lost into the music while being open to more experimental sounds, which can be heard throughout the set. And it was really nice to play tunes that had been waiting quite a while in the music library for the right time :).

If you listen to the set, I'd like to invite you to listen to as many layers and elements at once as you can and let yourself be taken on this genrefluid yet cohesive journey.

A mellow (non-club/listening) set with tunes (that have been helping me) to regulate/calm the nervous system as well as gain mental clarity. It'll be somewhere between (soothing) hip-hop, jazz, ambient dub/bass, funk, blues. Expect a flowy vibe with hints of nostalgia and melancholia, but with a positive and or empowering undertone. Subtle hopecore, if you will.
