Bastille - Things We Lost In The Fire (SaneBeats Remix)

For this atmospheric instrumental track created for the ESOPUS 25 "Jokes" CD (included in ESOPUS 25, the nonprofit arts publication now in bookstores) The Antlers frontman Peter Silberman took his inspiration from an old classic: 

A horse walks into a bar, and the bartender asks, "Why the long face?" 

Silberman talks about his choice in the issue's liner notes: "I love this joke for its simplicity, and fittingly, I wrote a piece that revolves around a single, economical melody [whose] central riff mimicked the phrase ‘Why the long face?’” The track appears on the compilation along with new songs by Lonnie Holley, Katie Von Schleicher, and Joseph Keckler, among others; the CD is introduced in the issue by comedian Demetri Martin.

Thinkin Bout You (feat. O.N.E)

For ESOPUS 11, published in the fall of 2008, we asked musicians to create a song for the issue's themed audio CD inspired by an advice column of their choosing. Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg was struck by an exchange between the Rev. Billy Graham and a young man who seeks his advice on how to get rid of impure thoughts he is certain would “appall” God. Graham responds, “Have you ever asked yourself what God wants you to think about?...The answer is that God wants to fill your mind with Himself—with thoughts and emotions that are good and pure, and reflect him instead of the evils of this world.” This directive serves as Meiburg’s point of departure for "Helix," a, beautiful, haunting track featuring Tibetan bells and, as always, Meiburg's magnificent voice.

ESOPUS (2003–2025) was an annual arts publication featuring multidisciplinary content presented in a striking visual format with minimal editorial framing and no advertising. Each issue included contemporary artists' projects, materials from the Museum of Modern Art archives reproduced in facsimile, fiction, poetry, works on film, visual essays, and a themed audio CD featuring brand-new songs from a range of musical acts. 
The Esopus Foundation, the nonprofit organization which published ESOPUS, underwent legal dissolution in Spring 2025. This site is a digital archive.
