Pender Street Steppers - Weirdos Bush Rave Vol 3

3 hours of me spinning 100% vinyl ~ some pop, some club, Italo, easy blends,

Captured on the 22.03.25 at Doka (Amstersdam), which has a very DJ comfortable booth. Play time was from around 3am-6ish.

This live recording is my first in at least 5 years - I’ve always struggled with the concept of DJing without a crowd/dance-floor so for my usual mix output I “record” in Ableton. I also enjoy “mixing” on the sofa as horizontal as possible so go figure.

And now, a little bit of JAZ

John Zahl, also known as JAZ, is a DJ and record collector based in New York, USA, well-known for his eccentric edits and oddball mixes. We managed to connect with John after he'd arrived back in NYC after a few months spent travelling.

His mix, which was actually recorded nine years ago for Sanpo Disco on NTS Radio, features many of his all-time favourite records. He tells us these are songs that he still loves, and which remain in constant rotation. We'd like to mention a few of the tracks, starting with the lovely slo-mo/Italo disco record 'Non Ricordo, Ma Piangendo', B-side of a rare 7" by Giancarlo Aspromonte. Pit Troja's 'Der Voodoo Mann' from 1985 can only be described as German hip-hop over a Moroder-esque bass-line, wonderfully eccentric, as advertised! The late great Björn Holm's 'Tid At Stå Stilla' from his 1984 LP Bortom Gränsernas Hav, takes us into Swedish synth-pop territory. The mix features a few of JAZ's own edits, including 'Cloud Worship' which has to be one of our favourite edits of all time, just superb. This is an exceptionally well put-together mix, and despite the wide range of material, it flows perfectly and naturally, as a good eclectic mix should do.

Portugal's esteemed producer Tiago dropped the beautiful and aspirational Sea Power &amp; Change EP last year, and now the ESP Institute is delighted to deliver its counterpart, the Remixed EP. The Soft Rocks gang takes the eerie Strangefruit for a ride with an 80s dubby approach on side A, speeding it up slightly and throwing in a smack of a snare, only to be followed by a Secret Circuit (Eddie Ruscha of Laughing Light of Plenty) version of Wild Combination that juxtaposes wobbly synths and guitars in a spaghetti-western vibe. All is gravy once the record flips and we sink into the Jonny Nash (of Sombrero Galaxy) remix of Yesterday Is Dead. This is one of those remixes you can't link to the original no matter how hard you try, but why try when what you have is such a melted masterpiece on your hands? Everything Nash touches is gold.


A2 - Wild Combination (Secret Circuit Remix)

Following last years acclaimed Curse of Soft Rocks album, we're invited to revisit said masterpiece from an alternative entry — a robust compilation of remixes. The tracklisting follows its predecessor verbatim, however every track is re-contextualized so wildly that we're left with a beautifully obtuse yet complimentary rendering. The personnel employed vary in style and technique drastically, but such is the ethos of Soft Rocks, and furthermore the ESP Institute. At the end of the day, we implore you to shut up and listen.
