Ever since the day they met they were inseparable. From the moment they woke up to the moment they went to bed, they did everything together. It almost seemed too good to be true, as though it was all a facade and behind closed doors: a totally different story. But this image was truly their reality: nothing could ever come between them.

Earlier this year LA-based collective, performance space and archival project Discostan expanded their arsenal, launching their new label arm with a reissue of Pakistani-British singer Nermin Niazi’s 1984 synth-pop masterpiece 'Disco Se Aagay'. As a follow up to the release the label have enlisted the talents of Jeddah-born, Dublin-based producer Moving Still to reimagine two of the original tracks for the club. With releases for Orange Tree and Dar Disku under his belt, he's no stranger to the edit which he showcases on these two Hi-NRG disco remixes, which are backed up on the flip by two experimental reprises and an English version of Nermin's work.

The latest house duo to emerge from the Parisian underground bid us bonjour with this stellar debut on Dialect, fusing retroist 80s leanings with brain mulching techno voodoo. Title track ‘Scandale’ and ‘Lame De Fond’ share the same pulsing sequenced heart, transplanted from Carpenter soundtracks and Italo disco classics and then zapped with a thousand volts of warped, detuned and malfunctioning synthesizer electricity. ‘El Topo’ replaces the bristling sequences with a spiky post punk snarl courtesy of live guitars, bass and organ (a la Suicide no less) but retains the twisted electronics for a woozy half time experiment in dancefloor psychedelia. Essential for fans of Joakim, Ivan Smagghe and early Gesaffelstein productions.

@feinestier is entering its 60s together with Lithuanian lad Liudas Lazauskas aka @roedeers and his „Landscape“ EP. We’re not exactly sure if those titular landscapes are to be understood literally, figuratively, metaphorically or all at once, nevertheless they are fascinating and a marvel to take in. 
Where and how do we start? With an (un)healthy dose of acid of course! „I’m very sorry (Acid)“ takes care of that, with the tune delivering everything the title promises, experience report included. Better make sure set and setting are right for this one! After that we’re taking a thrilling „Helicopter“ ride to „Glory“ and try not to loose our „Shoes“. Ok, that was a little cheap, I’m Very Sorry (Acid)! (Sorry again!) 
Anyway, to speak in strictly musical terms, „Helicopter“ is a banger. And „Glory“ is just beautiful with its gorgeous addictive swirling arps, while „Shoes“ keeps it cool tempo-wise and also mood-wise, creeping through some dark back-alleys with moody breakbeat drums and brooding synth chords. The penultimate „Silent Stories“ picks up the pace again a little bit, but gets even more grubby, hypnotic and seductive vocals included, before we get another face-melter with the closer „Sash“, which goes hard on the electric bass in your face, pitched-down vocals and some cowbells for good measure. 
Thank you Roe Deers for guiding us through these Landscapes for our 60th, the fresh air makes us feel like teenagers again.

The EP opens with his most blissed out track to date ‘Die Ewige Nacht’, an eight and a half minute inverted sun ritual based around shimmering cascades of dubbed up electronic percussion and an overdriven tintinnabulated FM arp.

Hi-NRG meets 80s B-Boy electro on ‘Crescent City’ with a careering off-road excursion into tripped out mutant carnival cavalcade territory.

Dia De Muertos’s offbeat eerie percussion and driving low frequencies are met with spectral buzzing melodic refrains from the furthermost reaches of a decaying Oaxacan cemetery.

INVINC 18 Sordid Sound System - Psychedelic Dungeon Disco Vol. IV (Samples) 12"/EP 10 April 2018

In a time when Jazz music is entering a contemporary renaissance and exciting the ears and minds of new audiences, Zombie Zombie's Étienne Jaumet offers us his unique, idiosyncratic take on the sound with the sprawling “8 Regards Obliques”, his 3rd solo album with the Versatile label.

Jazz requires a certain freedom of technique, interpretation and improvisation that already matches Jaumet’s own production style and sonic aesthetic as well as his playful approach towards music.
The eight pieces that make up the new LP were very quickly recorded; Jaumet let himself be carried away by the atmosphere without focusing too much on fine details or the laborious aspects of the composition process.

The finished article is a spontaneous collection that stands out, a true mirror image of the creative process adopted by the artist. Not surprisingly, spontaneity is one of the characteristics already present in his music, in both his recorded output and his live happenings, where he leaves much room for freedom and improvisation.

“8 Regards Obliques” was recorded at the Versatile studio in less than 3 weeks with quite a basic set up: TR 808, selected synthesizers, vocals and of course the saxophone, which is a constant presence also in his previous albums.
For the mix Etienne has again appealed to the maestro I:Cube, a central figure of the Versatile story and a prodigious engineer and artist in his own right. He immediately understood that it was necessary to keep the spontaneous side alive and to not over-produce the pieces or over-edit them, being constantly mindful to retain the power in the sound and in the frequencies.

From Sun Ra with “Nuclear war”, Miles Davis in “Shhh / Peaceful” or “Theme from a symphony” by Ornette Coleman to “Caravan” (already quoted by many jazzmen), Etienne enjoyed revisiting classic masterpieces and paying tribute to his inspirations. He allowed himself only one personal and original composition, “Ma révélation mystique”.

Premiere: Holographic Planes - Gaia (Jennifer Cardini Remix)[Critical Monday]

Her Majesty’s Ship celebrates release number 50 with a fantastic new EP from Mufti ft. Vongold that will be preceded by two singles - ‘Inverse’ on November 6th, then ‘Moonstruck’ on November 20th, before the full EP lands on November 27th with a superb music video to accompany ‘Silence’.

Mufti is Bernardo Barrera, a multi instrumentalist producer from Guadalajara, Mexico. This project comes after being part of Los Fugazzi, and finds him focus more on rock variants and 80’s music. A mix of electronics with disco, electro, EBM and post punk define the sound. Vongold, meanwhile, is Nora Cam, a DJ and producer also from Guadalajara and influenced by genres such as disco, new wave and various girl bands. Her sounds seek to highlight the female voice, merging it with indie dance for an extra special edge.

The idea behind this EP, which draws on the influence of bands like Depeche Mode, Lebanon Hanover and The Kvb, was to "convey how we are constantly feeling anxious and chased by our failures. And
even if we need to scream, the pressure and idealisation of modern life immobilises us and shuts us up."

Opening up the release is the superb ‘Silence’, a slow motion but high impact deep disco cut with a fat bassline and sensuous vocals. ‘Inverse’ is more punchy, with rugged bass and drums run through by
withering sci-fi synths and deadpan vocals from Vongold. ‘Totem’ is an excellent fusion of dark wave styles and crashing hits, it’s a new form of electronic punk that draws you deep into its own unique
sound world. Last of all is ‘Moonstruck’, a prowling late night groove filled with tension and menace.

This is a fittingly standout 50th EP for a label that has very much carved out its own singular place in the electronic music world.
