House of Spirits is the church of sound over which Tom Noble presides, raising the congregation to ecstatic heights from his pulpit of passion.

Noble’s initial attempts at making music began like most collectors-cum-producers, lifting samples from worn records and repurposing the dusty beats into efficient edits. Instead of lumbering in these limitations, Noble opted for a greater challenge by inviting musicians to transform his sketches into a widely – and wildly – dynamic live performance. The resulting studio celebration led to the euphoric Holding On / Keep Holding On 12” for Beats In Space Records.

“Holding On” glides on such a joyous, eventful groove that it’s impossible to confine the track to a specific time or place. Strings, seemingly lifted from a 70s Salsoul twelve, soar alongside a gospel choir preaching positivity for souls both lost and found. Buoyed by a bass lick fat with funk’s sin and guitars glittering in solid gold, “Holding On” embraces disco house authentically and timelessly.

On the flip, Aaron Coyes of Peaking Lights tucks the heavenly wonder of the original under a dub-worn blanket for an out-of-body dream beam. The power of Noble’s composition retains full form against the free-flowing disembodiment of the performers, melting into one amorphous, hustling and bustling entity held together at the whim of Coyes at the controls.

Each 12″ from Beats in Space Records features original artwork in considerate and serial form. Tom Noble adorns Holding On with the fluorescent sigil of a late night romance. The 12″ packaging constructed by Will Work For Good features a removable vinyl BIS logo cling.

Panthera Krause joins the Lobster Theremin stable with a mid-summer trip into the heart of the sun. Drawing on a plethora of classic house influences, Krause weaves these into a style which is a at once recognisable yet uniquely his own, production-wise drawing as much from the MPC-led West Coast beat scene as the European house approach. 

'Rules' kicks off the EP with a serious throwing of the gauntlet.. A slightly shuffled beat being quickly overtaken by a groove-hefty wandering bassline that bobs it's way around a melodic 8-bar refrain, suddenly smothered and smudged by the glowing warmth of sun-tinged pads. Pure summer analogue headiness distilled into 6 minutes of terrace-slaying bliss. 

On the flip, 'Rewo' takes a dusty shakin' drum pattern and filters a cut-throat sampled 'n' filtered piano stab into the mix. All seemingly harmless until the gargantuan sub bass comes rumbling into the fray. Solid lobster pool-party action on a 5* LA hotel rooftop. 

Closing out the EP, and moving things into edits-y territory, is 'Them Flutes'. Although debatable whether there are actually discernible flutes in the track, the final number is built around a looping proto-disco element that steadily evolves while shoving a cattle-prod to the hips when those periodic chords hit.

For out latest Burek podcast we have a skillfully layered journey into various shades of house from Birmingham based DJ and producer Mark E.
Mark E’s love affair with electronic dance music started when Manchester was Madchester and rave culture swept through England. Later he tasted house at the hands of legends like John Kelly and Frankie Knuckles at Wolverhampton scene, before moving to Birmingham for University where he is still today creating and feeding the club scene.
Mark  is one of those guys who releases at least a few amazing records each year. Now, nearly a decade of releasing music, Mark  has a discography that contains efforts for top-notch labels like Spectral Sound, Running Back, and Golf Channel and his very own imprint Merc.

Mark E has kindly provided us with second part of a triple mix series, mixed as a straight vinyl set at home, accompanied with a few bottles of fine beer and some stuffed animals. Mix also containing first airing of Mark forth-comer on Spectral Sound. BOOM! Enjoy!

When Birmingham, England-based producer Mark E burst onto the scene, he did it slowly. Taking cues from the likes of Theo Parrish and Moodymann, Mark E's early edits (be they of Womack & Womack, Diana Ross or Miss Jackson) were woozy in all the right ways, just clocking in over 100 BPMs, a rarity for most house tracks.
But he's picked up velocity ever since, his full-lengths Stone Breaker and Product of Industry now going the speed limit. For his first single on L.A. label ESP Institute, Mark E takes his foot off the gas a bit with "Laurentian Abyss", which namechecks the underwater valley off the coast of Canada (or else makes a Transformers reference). It's hard to tell what's beefier on "Laurentian Abyss": the synth stabs or the flanged kick. Both bounce and pack a wallop. But as the track chugs along, a train-like clacking appears underneath and between the hand percussion and chopped-up keys, a bit more space opens up. Not quite an abyss, but it floats.

Mark E last delivered on Futureboogie back in November 2014, so it’s a welcome return to the label for the Birmingham based DJ & producer.  With his Merc imprint running on full steam, and previous releases on revered labels like Spectral Sound and Running Back, Mark is becoming an ever dependent exponent of the real and raw house music vibe, and no more so than on the Basement Trax EP.

Basement Trax 1, distorted synths wander over a low-slung beat, the marching hi-hats and filter work are tweaked to perfection.  It’s a track of basic elements, but done so well, the arrangement building steadily and bags of warmth and soul deep at the heart of this track. 

The gnarly bass and classic string sounds of Basement Trax 2 make an ideal companion piece to the A side.  Delivered in the finest wild-pitch tradition, the raw sounding production packs a punch as the stomping drums and repetitive keys ramp up the heat for a real blazer of an underground club cut.

The shopfront looked gloomy and mysterious in the streetlight. Dust sat layered in the windows and no light could be seen from within. The crew of revellers stood eagerly outside the door, a small queue had already begun to form behind them as they waited. Finally at midnight, the bolts were unlatched and it swung open. One at a time they were ushered inside and in the distance they could hear the sound of drums echoing. Below them there was a party underway, deep down in the basement, and they were going there.

If you’ve visited Ibiza in the last few years, there’s a fair chance you’ll have encountered DJ Pippi and Willie Graff. The experienced duo has been DJing together on the White Isle for years, finding time between sundown sets to make music together in Italian veteran Pippi’s home studio.

The pair’s first collaborative EP dropped on Drumpoet Community way back in 2007, with the belated follow-up appearing a decade later on Compost Disco. Here they make their bow on Leng with the “Lunares EP”, a typically warm and woozy collection of cuts named after the Spanish word for “polka dots” (a fashionable item in Spain and the Balearic islands throughout the 1980s).

They begin with the slow-burn sunrise bliss of “Lunares”, a shuffling and glassy-eyed affair in which evocative, emotion-rich strings, heady vocal samples, echoing sitars and lilting guitars slowly rise above a thickset backing track rich in dubby bass, swelling pads, starry electronics and snappy drums. Capable of tugging at the heartstrings, it’s a sublime slab of mood-enhancing bliss perfect for both weary dancing and sofa-bound relaxation.

“Island Visitors” is, if anything, even more spaced-out and intoxicating. Employing extra-slow beats and a prominent jazzy bass guitar part, the pair invites us to get locked in to a chuggy rhythm. Throw in druggy synth lines, tactile electric piano stabs and some suitably cosmic effects and you have a hallucinatory treat that would no doubt have gained the approval of the late, great Andrew Weatherall.

The EP’s final musical moment “Saxolicious” lives up to the premise of the title, with Pippi and Willie wrapping snaking, effects-laden saxophone solos around a languid, slow motion groove bristling with hazy intent. Expect chiming electric piano chords, dreamy pads, rolling grooves and another fine bassline that will worm its way into your subconscious, spark up a spliff and stay there for days.
