Temple is a listening session located at @espacio-perpendicular (Madrid), an associative space on the outskirts of Madrid. "For this inaugural edition of Temple, another new adventure alongside Josephine, I approached the set in a natural way, with only a few secure tracks and others chosen from many I've selected over months but haven't played for one reason or another. Given the volume of music circulating nowadays, my premise is mostly not to repeat them, a manifestly failed attempt to give visibility to so many creative and talented agents.

Horizontal listening events are my favorites. If we add that they are among familiar and new faces, it is in these moments where we can unleash our imagination without complexes and in a comfortable environment. If, in addition, it is playing at home, as is the case at Espacio Perpendicular, the result is perfect.

"Chapter 01, slot 01... Regarding the lineup, I packed an opening suitcase with records from the region, spanning various eras. The first reference I included was "Inducing The Pleasure Dreams V2," a live recording of Justo Bagüeste & Suso Saiz at Periferias in 2016, and from there, whatever could happen before and after. From Dalila to Charly García with "Yendo de la cama al living," both for the name and the mood, which is how I envisioned the event and how it turned out: bodies rested and affected by the sound. Thanks for listening, and to my friends for making it so special".

"Preparing the set for Temple was already special for me because I wasn't just thinking about what I wanted to do or communicate, as on other occasions, but how I could musically connect with Suso Saiz, whom I deeply admire. We decided not to talk beforehand and engage in an exercise of experimentation, presenting it with the trust generated by the event organizers, the other participating artists (also friends), and the attendees, among whom were also many friends. The result was magical; musically, we transitioned from the most subtle drones to moments that were even noisy, and it seemed like we all floated in a limbo that made the two hours fly by".

"Playing music at Temple was a real pleasure, thanks to the organizing crew, Espacio Perpendicular, and the attendees. A beautiful memory for those who were there, dancing and daydreaming. As the last DJ set of the event, my intention with the mix was to encourage swaying, static dancing. Just like in Telaraña, my show on Radio Relativa, I tried to harmonize classic sounds from the '90s like dub, downtempo, IDM... Inspired by the significant chill-out movement of that decade. ILAY, un artista sonoro de 18 años que, bajo el alias ILAYRUNI, trabaja en la intersección de la música electrónica y los instrumentos de percusión.
Fusionando estos dos mundos, navega a través de una amplia gama de estilos durante sus sets y producciones, buscando patrones altamente percusivos que fusionan con sintetizadores, capas de ambiente y texturas entre otros elementos.

En una búsqueda de nuevas propuestas, ejerce con curiosidad una libre exploración del abanico sonoro, como es el caso de este live a 85 - 170 BPM que nos ofrece para la segunda entrega de nuestra serie de podcast. Unas velocidades que funcionan muy bien con este tipo de elementos rítmicos a la hora de dar un carácter tan tribal a esta grabación, lo que viene siendo un buen punto de partida que da paso a su imaginación cuando de componer se trata. 

Queremos señalar lo acertado que es en su toma de decisiones, tanto en diseño de estructuras y sentido del ritmo como en selección y síntesis de sus pistas, volviendo atractivo todo lo que toca.

Por último destacamos su trabajo "Earth Tools for Trance", un EP de cinco grabaciones lanzado a mediados de febrero de este año que podéis encontrar en el sello de @phase.lab.mad

Josephine’s Soundscapes is the moniker of Jose Salas, an audiovisual creator, art director, and active promoter of alternative culture in Madrid. When it comes to music, he has been an active participant in shaping Madrid’s underground electronic music scene for over 20 years. In recent years, he has founded and worked as artistic director, promoter, and DJ in club nights and platforms such as Club Paraíso Madrid, CALMA, and the independent creative cell a_mal_gam_a (Dance Cave; Avalovara, Listening Club; L’art Dance Club @ ARCO; and Festival En Pausa @ La Casa Encendida).

His work has continually evolved across a variety of cultural projects, both collective and personal. These include his seminal podcast Silly Europeans (2010–2016), his program Sonda Dispersa on Madrid’s public radio station M21, and his current projects such as Campos de Marte on Radio Relativa—a podcast dedicated to experimental music—and the curation of temple, the listening sessions at Espacio Perpendicular.
