The ideology of hypnotic techno was these swirling, trance-like arrangements and steady evolutions and peaks of every track, but most importantly a sense of time dilation was the ultimate goal. Sucking people into a vortex of sound, historically these cuts were all pushing into the eight-minute realm and were meant to be layered in long, delicate sections. There’s a massive crossover in sound palettes to this and the Undulate mix, just in a 4/4 structure, though the entire style became a predictable mess over overused formant filters and an overindulgence of the VST Omnisphere. At times driving, at others calming, yet never letting up from a focus of sucking you in, mix three of “The Arsonist & The Architect” is about Dyschronometria or “distorted perception of time.”

Taking a step back is a prerequisite to making sure your longevity in this scene remains sturdy and grounded. Everyone should push pause once and a while, relaxing their ears and minds before returning to the crucible. I’m no stranger to ambient musings, and this last year and a half I’ve spent countless hours listening to calming music, but for this, I felt a more appropriate applique would be the descriptor of side-rooms of yesteryear. Brooding, pensive, at times rhythmic, and best enjoyed with headphones, number four in “The Arsonists & The Architect” is all about the chillout room.

While not a category I’ve really seen anyone else apply to this sound, for me, it’s the first word that comes to my mind when I hear these uneven, pulsating, off-kilter complexities that this entire mix is comprised of. There’s confusing time signatures, wonky percussion, entrancing pads and synths, and a rhythm structure that sometimes breaks itself before it comes back together. To say this mix was a challenge to construct is an understatement, but I’m exceptionally pleased with the result. Succumb to a tidal wave of rhythmic hypnosis with mix one of “The Arsonist & The Architect” - Undulate.

The moments before the sun drops below the horizon are unique. A sense of mystery and of the supernatural descend upon the surroundings and you can’t help but notice the electricity in the ether. Such transitional moments in an open-air party environment are pristine opportunities to turn the revelry into a bacchanal. Envisioning the fog rolling in as the sun disappears while playing for an audience clearly open for a journey, this mix begins as daytime party vibes but becomes a tribal warehouse by the close, edition two of “The Arsonist & The Architect” lets night fall - Vespertine.

Having made a name for himself through a string of choice releases for the likes of Nous’klaer and Delsin, Dutch producer Konduku has been turning heads with his ever innovative take on the techno medium. Pushing for new directions, Konduku’s been laying down intriguing blends of dubbed-out, Afro-infused grooves and plural strains of abstract-leaning, breaks-friendly hybrids. The present mix showcases the breadth of his influences and essential components, extrapolating techno’s genre-transcending nature through a fine mix of heavily verbed-out electronics and shape-shifting buildup, never quite going where you’d expect it, rather seeking the excitement of suspenseful arcs and unsuspected developments. Bold as it should.

Swiss DJ/Producer Audrey Danza debuts for the Bassiani Podcast series with an hour and a half of her own music, composed mostly of her unreleased tracks as well as a few exciting collaborations. From tripped-out techno, to house and trance bent rhythms, this mix shows that Audrey’s course has been nothing short of impressive, from Geneva and now Berlin. Since her intro to the local scene back in 2019, she’s racked up a residency at multidisciplinary event space Motel Campo, played clubs from Panorama Bar to Circoloco to Robert Johnson and Fabric, and, as a means of rereleasing lost 80-90s records at first (and now her own productions as well), kicked off her label Proxima in 2020. She’s also been active in the world of Berlin nightlife, where she relocated since 2022, with frequent collabs with the Sound Metaphors family, from party series to collaborations around her label. On top of a busy schedule and a growing pile of remixes and from the ground up productions, Audrey stays the course. Her sound is a fusion of industrial beats and percussions, acid, 90s synths house, self-aware and constantly cross-referencing to sculpt a fleshed out world of sound that’s psychedelic and deeply immersive. Bassiani Podcast 268 is a signature mix of warped transmissions and assembly line beats, a gradual burn and sharp ascent to peak-time techno compiled by a leading light of the Swiss electronic music scene. The attention the Amsterdam scene currently enjoys is, in no small part, down to the tireless work of Sandrien. She’s been there since the nineties, with residences at Trouw and now De School, close ties to Rush Hour and also through her own parties, which have been bringing the likes of DJ Nobu and Blawan to the city for years. Her uncompromising techno style has taken her around the world and to labels like Ben Sims’ Theory, amongst others. In short, she is a living local legend.

Sandrien takes a long view on this mix, starting with an escapist ambient selection that gets your attention. It transports you to a different world before the DJ puts her foot down and brings the grooves. Things remain decidedly cinematic and intergalactic over the course of the next hour, with various shades of deep techno eventually ending up in a place of ambient beauty not far from where you started. It’s a rounded mix that begs to be played over and over.
