"I am Vallaya Smith-Dickey. I have been an RN for 12 years now, or I was until July of 2012. I started to feel ill in June. I had already been diagnosed with fibromyalgia a couple of years before, so pain was no stranger to me. I dealt with that and was able to work full time and raise 4 children, until "the bite". I mean tick bite. I didn't think anything about it. I've been bitten many times over the years, living in southeastern Oklahoma. I began to feel flu like by the end of June, and still I wasn't really concerned. What initially took me to seek a doctor were severe muscle spasms, and for some reason, my legs were hurting like nothing I'd ever experienced before. I received a phone call by the 2nd of July from the doctor's office stating I had come back with a positive Lyme lab result. I was started on antibiotics. 2 weeks later, as I struggled to continue to work, I received the call stating I also had Rocky mountain spotted fever and another tick born illness. The last day I was able to work was the beginning of August. Over the past year and a half, I've seen about 7 different doctors. I took 5 months of antibiotics, and then the doctors just started treating symptoms. Depression, anxiety, neuropathy, insomnia, narcolepsy, tremors, headaches, muscle spasms, memory loss, loss of concentration, and serve fatigue. I lost almost 30 pounds that first 5 months due to nausea. I developed an ileus in my small intestine, due partly to the disease, and partly from the side effects of the medication. I did get better over time, but the doctor's were seemingly tiring of me, and started describing me as a psych patient, or suffering from PTSD. Being a medical professional, I was deeply wounded. I am still dealing with the affects of a disease that many doctors here in Oklahoma claim doesn't exist. I was really suffering physically, emotionally, neurologically, and spiritually. "My daughter woke up in the middle of the night running a fever of 102. I immediately mixed some of our peppermint oil into our body butter and began to rub her feet with it. I also use our essential oils in a cleaning solution of vinegar, water, and baking soda. Usually lemon because it is a natural degreaser to clean my house, but I also mix different oils in there to use in place of a product like "febreze" to mist on fabrics
I also use a diffuser in place of one of those toxic "scentsy" things to keep my entire living area smelling good in whatever oil I choose for the day."
