After nearly a year hiatus, Portnall Progcast is back with a special mix from easily it's finest contributor to date. 
The past year has seen the world determinedly slink out of Covid based choke hold. Cities are again open, clubs are again packed, and we are back enjoying music side by side like we thought we never would since the pandemic started. 
For most producers the pandemic offered a period of forced solitude in which to explore and progress their talent. This was no different for London (UK) based progressive house wizard Essco, who has seen the fruits of his lockdown labours release music on labels such as Cosavepole Recordings, Nylo Labs, and Cr8 Records, searing our eardrums with his rolling basslines through both headphones and club speakers alike. 
2022 feels like the beginning of something huge for Essco; the same breath of fresh air and anticipation we all feel coming out of the pandemic, and it's our pleasure to share his mix of tracks "special to him" as a means to propel the Portnall Progcast back into orbit.

Portnall Progcast 09 - Essco

This UK based upcoming talent caught our eye a few months back with one of his sessions. We quickly felt that he was someone our podcast was missing out on, so it was only a matter of time that we invited him as our next guest.

Essco believes the quality music should utilise the key driving forces of several electronic genres. “I try to incorporate the euphoria of trance, the groove of house and the mood of techno”. 

He has released on various respected labels including Fragrant and JOOF and gained support from world famous DJ’s. Essco’s sound has been described as something that is filled with personality and emotion but also hits hard on the dance-floor.

Presenting their first release of the year, Roger Martinez's Higher States welcomes Essco to the label for his debut EP. Hailing from the UK, Essco first emerged in 2019 with the success of early tracks like 'Timelapse', 'Withdrawal' and 'Mirage'. Armed with a sound that incorporated the euphoria of trance, the groove of house and the mood of techno, Essco was hotly tipped as one of the progressive scene's most promising new talents. Further successes soon followed with John OO Fleming's Joof imprint and Univack becoming landing spots for his far-reaching sound. Now, following a contribution to Freegrant Music's 'Fantastic Four' series to begin the year, Essco adds Higher States to his resume with a four track showcase entitled 'Diva'. 

EP opener and title selection 'Diva' finds Essco composing with a strong sense of space. With each sound being an event in a slowly expanding landscape, zooming out to reveal a world of scale in which depth and contrast coax perfectly with rhythm and melody. Wavy arps and balmy atmospheres highlight this mood lifting excursion, while commanding grooves and driving percussion keep things firmly on the dancefloor. The thought-provoking therapeutic experience that is ‘The Prophecy’ follows, and finds Essco shaping pyrotechnic effects around tough punchy beats and rippling rhythms, ultimating landing as a powerful mid-set excursion.

Meanwhile, 'The Other Side’ continues Essco’s modus operandi that honors the wide musical scope he is most interested in. Building with an energetic pulse, its buoyant beats and rolling rhythmic structures eventually give way to fluttery arps and hopeful overlays, an amalgamation of sound which should play well in the morning hours. The UK artist's molecular level of detail shines on EP closer ‘Defiance’, a main room assault where swaying chord stabs and muscular grooves chug mechanically against dissonant drum blasts and hopeful melodica, resulting in an exhilarating collection-closing escapade.

Progressive electronic music that blends the groove of House, the euphoria of Trance and the mood of Techno. 

Essco has been somewhat of a quiet achiever within the UK progressive scene. Having gained underground notoriety after a string of respected releases and standout performances, Essco has humbly crafted a signature sound that defies conventional electronic genres. Essco’s discography includes releases on Roger Martinez’s Higher States and John 00 Fleming’s JOOF. His music has received support from the likes of Sasha, John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo.

Essco has a stripped back sound full of emotion and personality but focused around dark grooves that hit hard on the dance-floor. An enigmatic force behind the decks, with an ability to weave together diverse sonic elements, both Essco’s productions and DJ sets are full of depth and originality. Essco has always believed that progressive should be a style rather than a genre, the intricacy and patience of progressive music shines through in his productions and emotive DJ sets.

In the depths of London's underground music scene, Essco commands the graveyard shift, frequently closing out intimate club nights at established venues such as Egg, Studio 9294 and Union. Both headlining and supporting artists including Sacha Yonan and Dowden, Essco's sets are always unique and mainly showcase his own unreleased music.

Essco’s new project is his label - Strictly Essco. Years of honing his craft has led to Essco’s sound falling in between the cracks of multiple genres. Having moved more towards the darker sounds of techno, Essco wanted to create a space free of boundaries, expectations and deadlines where he can display his hidden gems to the world.
